TGA 2024 Nominees
It’s that time of year again! I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks about TGA 2024.
- What game do you think will win GOTY this year?
- What other games do you think should have been nominated but weren’t?
- And here’s the big question: Does DLC like Shadow of the Erdtree deserve to be nominated for GOTY?
Personally, I’m more excited about the game announcements at The Game Awards, but if I had to pick my own GOTY, I’d choose Metaphor: ReFantazio. As for the Elden Ring DLC, I think it’s fantastic, but I feel it might be a bit unfair to include it in the main GOTY category. It seems like it should have its own category for best DLC or expansion.
Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions

I personally never really cared for award shows that much. It's essentially just a confirmation bias game. I don't mind people watching them because they want to see devs rewarded for their hardwork but a lot of people tend to use these shows as "proof" as why their favorite games are good in some vague battle for supremacy.
On top of all this, most people just watch the shows for the trailers and the reveals and I heard the DICE awards are a proper celebration of games where the Game Awards just skip over most of the actual awards and it's been a problem since forever.
A lot of the games I like every year don't even win awards or even got nominated.
I'm trying not to be a buzzkill here but if you guys enjoy stuff like this than more power to you.

While I haven't played Shadow of the Erdtree or Elden Ring, and I'm sure it's fun, I don't think it should be in the "GOTY" category. Maybe as you suggested a DLC section but I can't think of any other good dlcs of 2024.

I rarely play games the year they came out so I can't have an opinion on which games should win whatever categories they're nominated for. I just care about new game announcements. That being said, it feels weird for a DLC to be nominated for something other than best ongoing game/continued support/whatever that category is called.

the awards remind me that I should play Shadow dlc... idk what to else thinkins. I do like bunch of new game announcements guess. I did like when there was more cringe, but feel there is less of that lately.

Yeah I think having DLC being a GOTY contender (with a big chance of winning too) is not the correct way to go about it. Even if it’s big enough to be its own game (I haven’t played it but that’s what I’ve heard from others), it’s still an expansion and not a new game.

I think Awards tell more about the industry than about the games. I have nothing pro or con, it doesn't really matter to me. But the DLC debate is interesting. My opinion is that they're missing the point. I haven't played Shadow yet, but I think its very nature of DLC has a lot to do with the praise it received. Maybe it's big enough to be a whole game, but I don't think it would be so popular if it was. Giving it the award (I'm pretty sure it's gonna be Astro, but let's say it's Shadow) would be a terrible signal to the other studios. Having a DLC category, on the other hand, could make the industry be a little less self indulgent with future DLCs, which can't be a bad thing.

At the end of the day the Game Awards don't really mean anything, but it's still interesting to talk about. I personally did not like Shadow of the Erdtree very much, but even so it is an impressive and decently high quality DLC. But it should not be in the GOTY category, Elden Ring already won 2 years ago and had its time in the splotlight. I believe that other games deserve recognition more than a content expansion to a game that already won GOTY. Especially with a solo-dev game like Balatro being nominated which is absolutely huge.

I think that Metaphor: Refantazio should win GOTY, another top-tier game from Atlus. I do think that Persona 3 Reload should've been nominated for something and got snubbed. It was a great remake of P3 that brought it up to the standards of P5R. Lastly no a DLC should never be nominated for GOTY, it's a DLC, not a game. A new DLC category should've been created if they wanted to include DLC in the awards.

For game of the year we have: 3 japanese games (plus a dlc), 1 chinese game, 1 small indie game. What happened western devs?
From that list, my pick is Astro Bot. From everything we got this year, probably Dragon's Dogma 2...
