August Update

You can find my master list at here.

One of the problems I find with many of the categories is that they seem to assume things. I play games to chill and relax, not because I am a part of some gaming fraternity. I don't have playing buddies or people I discuss games with, nor do I have much interest in the people behind the games.

Because of this, categories such as “A game recommended to you by someone” or “A game you watched someone else play first (partially or in full)” become a problem. I don’t watch other players playing a game.

The only thing I could think of is that I do watch reviews of games, and those contain both recommendations and some gameplay – so those will have to do.

Added:
12. A game recommended to you by someone else - Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
19. A game where you play as an antihero or a villain - Thief (2014)
28. game you watched someone else play first (partially or in full) - Bright Memory
42. game that had a red retirement rating on HLTB when you started playing it (10% or higher) - Just Cause 2

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was a recommendation by tiamat911 (https://howlongtobeat.com/forum/thread/2605/1#post95601) – was not specifically recommended to me but recommended in general. It was okay, but I think this is a title that sacrifices gameplay and focusses on graphic fidelity and sound. It’s gorgeous, it has a fun, simple battle system and beautiful lore, but the vast empty spaces and simple puzzles almost feel sometimes like glorified walking simulator.

The Thief reboot was a game I was always wanting to play but afraid of hating. Steam puts it at mostly positive, but many of the more experienced players really did not like it. I think this is a case of hanging too much to the past. On it’s own, Thief (2014) is a decent stealth game with decent map design and lots of nice side quests. Sure, it’s been dumbed down for modern audiences, and the story is nothing to write home about, but it’s an okay experience, and I enjoyed it.

Iron Pineapple has a fantastic series called “Souls-Like games you've never heard of” where he explores unknown games with the souls-like tag on Steam. Some of them did become successful later, but most are never heard of again. In his only second video in the series (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kV_6ZSBCemA&list=PLuY9odN8x9pvIoTDtNOZxzo5m6EsBspAi&index=25), he looked at Bright Memory and provided a collage of gameplay that was fun enough for me to consider wish-listing this. Sure, it’s short, but it was fun while it lasted.

The last game to make it into the list this month is Just Cause 2. I do admit I was surprised to see it has a 10.8% retirement rate, and I was even more surprised after I finished it. This is the best thing I played this month. It was well designed, contained a large map and diverse biomes to explore, had punchy controls, fun gameplay, and silly missions. I enjoyed every minute.

I've only done three challenges in August... however, these are the last three of the main challenge I have to do.

I still want to do the bonus challenges, but I am technically done with the 2024 challenge.

Here's my collection: https://www.howlongtobeat.com/user/R2D21999/lists/29881/R2D21999-2024-Challenge

09-1. A remake or remaster of a game - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (2019) - This is a remake of the Game Boy version.

10. A game with 6+ endings - Vampire Savior: The Lord if Vampire - This is also known outside of Japan as Darkstalkers 3. And if you know anything about fighting games, is that they have multiple characters, and sometimes each one of those characters has their own storyline to go through with their own endings. Especially so with something like Darkstalkers. I think there's 10 characters? So at least 10 endings.

44-2. A game that you have beaten before and are replaying - Lego DC Super-Villains - I beat this in 2019, before joining the site. I beat it again now.

Jan: 14 games
Feb: 5 games
Mar: 13 games
Apr: 7 games
May: 4 games
June: 6 games
July: 6 games
Aug: 3 games

I wouldn't think I'd be anywhere this high, so it'll be a nice little achievement for me. Right now I'm taking time off from new games and enjoying some Fire Emblem: 3 Houses. See ya'll in October!

Well done for completing the challenge!!! Is that the 2nd year in a row?

I have an outside chance of managing it as well, but I might just fall short.

Congratulations!

September was good for gaming by my standards with 4 completions:

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
48. A game that has been a HLTB Game of the Month

Halo: Reach
38. A game with a subtitle

Dragon Age II Ultimate Edition
36. A game that heavily features either fire or ice
I'm taking liberty with this one. The game itself doesn't heavily feature fire or ice, but my elemental mage build definitely did.

Halo 4
20-2. A game set in the far future

That puts me at 16/50 with 3 months to go. My goal is 25/50, and I've got some shorter games - compared to these RPGs I've been playing - on the immediate horizon, so I should hit or exceed that target.

September update!

Had a good start, then slowed down, but came back strong and will still keep going! Finished 7 challenge games and spent (79h) on them.
And I want to shoutout R2D21999, which I used their list for Category 45, and I chose What Remains of Edith Finch, didn't expect it but my god what a beautiful game, absolutely stunning experience.

02. An old game (released 10+ years ago) – LIMBO - Classic and genre defining, fun and way easier than I remembered it to be!

September Update

Big gaming month after a bunch of smaller months

07. A game you got for free: Texting the Awkward Ace Guy You've Had a Crush on Since High School ✅Completed Sept 2nd. Is free on itch.io. I recommend playing the much more fleshed out, non game-jam version that is also on itch.io and I don't believe is free though.

17. A game that is themed around dogs or cats: Cat Quest ✅ Completed Sept 9th. Perfect fit.

27. A game that was adapted from another medium (book, movie, etc.) or a game that has been adapted into another medium Astro Boy: Omega Factor✅ Completed Sept 5th
Not sure if Omega Factor was a specific adaptation, but Astro Boy is created by the OG of manga, Osamu Tezuka.

35. A game containing a real or fictional religion: Flowers: Le Volume Sur Printemps
✅Completed Sept. 12th
Takes place in a Christan boarding school, with a lot of religious themes.

39. A game that surprised you: Chants of Sennaar ✅ Completed Sept 18th
It surprised me in that, despite being somewhat a fan of linguistics, a game about decrypting these made-up languages would be so much fun and not really that tedious. Also surprised me in how much I was able to understand without guides, though eventually I did need them as there were some very obscure puzzles.

18-2. A VN or text-based game: Let's Watch Steamboat Willie ✅ Completed Sept. 30th
Despite being my 10th VN completed in 2024, this is the first I couldn't find other categories for, and I knew I would get to it eventually.

(Updating post as I forgot I completed this in September):
33-1. A “threequel” (third part of a series): Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations ✅Completed Sept 2nd

September Update
-Journey: Really interesting short game backlogged from a long time
-BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle: Gave it a shot even though I knew it wasn't a "proper" BlazBlue game but turn out ok served as a gateway to know also other anime fighter franchises, and enjoyed the silly history mode.
-Grey Matter: Nice to know this Flash game is still playable in Newgrounds after all this time. Defeating the final boss felt really satisfying.
-Resident Evil 5: I know when it came out some years ago most people complained about the direction the gameplay took more on the action side than the survival horror, and the supposed racism (the game is not really racist) but got to say that even though it is basically an action game is a really good one I really enjoyed the couch cooperative experience with split screen.

Hi everyone! I hope you're all doing well. I'm playing some really fun games, and lots of cool stuff is going on in my life. This may be a bit early, but for the 2025 gaming challenge, would someone else like to take the role of hosting the thread and creating a list of challenges? I've done it two years in a row, and I'm a bit busier nowadays. Happy gaming!

It's been a while since I came here, mostly work and study, and playing very long games (Astlibra: Revision is awesome but looooong)
On August I got tired of Marvel SNAP (I got to Inifinity level and there is not much more).
But mostly I played Astlibra: Revision, loved the story, and wanted to finish it, loved the crow character also, maybe the storytelling is not very good, but the character relationship sell the game.
The other three I finished are:
Just a To The Moon Beach Episode - The dissapointing ending to a serie I have been following since the first game released three month after I broke a five years relationship.
Pac Man - A classic game that I really love, I don't think there is much to say, everyone knows Pac Man
Mind Scanners - Papers Please for the mentally unstable, I really liked it, the atmosphere is very well done, with the machines feeling creepy and invasive.

In-Progress 2024 Challenge List:
01. A new game (released within the past year) - Gigantic Rampage Edition
02. An old game (released 10+ years ago) - Fract OSC
04. An ancient game (released 30+ years ago) - Ultima 1: The First Age of Darkness
05. A time sink (50+ hours) - Temtem
06. A quick completion (less than an hour) - Pac-Man
08. A game you've been wishing and waiting for - Just a To The Moon Series Beach Episode

09-2. A game that received new translations to other languages some time after its initial release - Kero Blaster
10. A game with 6+ endings - Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
19. A game where you play as an antihero or a villain - Dragon Ball: The Breakers
20-1. A game set in a historical time period - Rome: Total War
21. A game with a female protagonist - Hydrophobia: Prophecy
22. A game without any humans - Bulb Boy
25-1. A game set in a world you would like living in - NightSky
25-2. A game whose protagonist you would want to be friends with - Astlibra: Revision - Bro's before hoes, man

I might not be the best person to host it, but I really love the tradition of the Gaming Challenge, and I'd gladly keep it going on for 2025!

Regarding the "Someone else's favorite game", that Finnedorb mentioned not having a game for the category, mine is Outer Wilds, honestly, I'm sure I'll never play anything like it ever.

September Update

You can find my master list at here.

I’m at a point where I’ve done enough to make me think I can complete the challenge this year. I also have to say that I’m not enjoying it as much as I should – a notion I’ll elaborate on in a separate post.

Added:
[I] 10. A game with 6+ endings - Wheels of Aurelia
26. A game where you play as a bug or an aquatic creature - Freddi Fish 3: The Case of the Stolen Conch Shell.
27. A game that was adapted from another medium (book, movie, etc.) or a game that has been adapted into another medium - Gold and Glory: The Road to El Dorado
32. A game that starts with the same first letter as in your username (if your username doesn’t contain letters, pick a random letter) - Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood
34. A bright and cheerful game - Yoku's Island Express[/URL][/B]

At the moment I choose to play games that will fit the challenge, and it’s hard to find games in my backlog that slot into the remaining categories. Therefore, I resorted to finding such games in the Itch.io bundle to Ukraine, a bundle with hundreds of indie games that are not a part of my backlog.

Wheels of Aurelia is such a game – a road trip in 1970s Italy, where you ride a car while picking up all sorts of people along the way. The focus here is on the dialogue with your passenger, and each branch of conversation can lead to a different ending. Each run of the game is about 20 minutes long, but with 16 endings, this game needs to be replied to get a more cohesive understanding of the times. I did find 6 different endings, but in my opinion, the dialogues were not strong enough to carry the game’s ideas.

The next two games I own. Freddi Fish 3: The Case of the Stolen Conch Shell was played by younger members of the family many years ago, and I needed to use ScummVM to play it as the original CD no longer worked on modern machines.

Gold and Glory: The Road to El Dorado I bought as a bundle with the movie at an outlet about 15 years ago. Watched the animated movie but never played the game. Surprisingly enough – it still works out of the box. A half-baked and rushed point-and-click adventure game – but it was quick to finish and easy – so that was that.

Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood is the second in the Brothers in Arms series. It came out the same year as the first one and plays almost the same. Luckily enough, a few improvements to the tactical view made a big difference and I enjoyed it more. Still – these tactical first-person shooters are not my thing. Was happy to see it finished.

The last game was Yoku's Island Express. I bought this game early this year and oh my god did I have fun with it! A Metroidvania game combining platforming, pinball and lots of charm. By far the best game I played this month, and I will come back to 100% it in the future!

A game where you play as a bug or an aquatic creature was another category I did not like. I am willing to put my money down, that whoever thought it up was thinking about Hollow Knight just like the person who came up with the Cat or Dog category was thinking about Stray.

As a personal opinion - I consider myself someone interested in games, if I see a category that I can’t come up with at least 5 games to match in 15 minutes, it should not be there. It would have been better to just do “a game where you play as an animal” to bundle all those strange fringe challenges.

I would like to see many more people joining in, and for that, I believe we should create a list that is simple, with 50 well-defined categories, each giving you plenty of choices and avoiding ambiguous definitions or ones aimed specifically at gamers. I actually created such a list back in March for my amusement, but I have a feeling that I will not do the challenge next year so not sure I have the right to butt in 😊

While I disagree from Cat or Dog category being limited (besides there being an obvious choice that is stray), I do understand the frustration on the bug or aquatic category, but I honestly don't think it was that bad, it was definitely on the harder side, yet I don't see it as a problem if you have to scroll a bit on your list or shop for a category. I had to do a bit of thinking since I've already played some games that would've fit, but quite easily I found many contenders in stores and then chose the one that I felt most interested, which ended up being incredibly good.

But also I indulge you to join in on the discussions we have on the transition of the year, which we try to form the best and most fun Gaming challenge!
