So I have finished two things this month with both being pretty decent and the second one being fairly long. A fairly good month.

Astral Chain - It has pretty entertaining combat and there's a decent amount of variety outside of battles. The story however isn't much to write home about, it's very predictable and the game kinda drags in the middle. Still a pretty fun game with a strong start and finish and enough high points in between to keep you going.

Aiyoku no Eustia - A dark fantasy visual novel that thankfully doesn't try to be too dark. It's an engaging story the whole way through. Although the way "routes" are basically part of the main plot, instead of being separated like usually, means that the pacing can be kind of slow. You have to spend quite a lot of time learning about the character's pasts, motivations, and worldviews before to plot would resume. It's still worth it though because while I didn't find the mysteries of the setting all that compelling, the character's stakes in them more than made up for that.

I like your method here! Celebrating the wins and still adding to the backlog.

My backlog has blown out to 263 games (just the games I own!) and 173 days to beat them all. On my current trajectory, I should be finished them in about 10 years! I've had to instill a discipline of targeting my Switch games for completion so I can justify buying more Switch games!

Do you ever just offload a game you've already bought before you have played it?

Quite a few replays this month for me

11. Supreme Commander 2 (replay)
13. Shadow the Hedgehog
20. Glitchspace
28. Half-Life (replay)
28. Half-Life: Opposing Force (replay)
29. Half-Life: Blue Shift (replay)
31. Half-Life: Absolute Redemption (mod replay)

The Best: Half-Life easily. Opposing Force gives it a run for its money with the additions but it does riff too hard on the original story beats and comes up just short of the original. Plus knowing that most of it isn't canon kinda hurts it retroactively.

The Worst - So Shadow the Hedgehog might seem like the obvious pick here, and those initial playthroughs present the player with a largely detestable game that make it fit right here. It's that slippery, janky, mid-2000's Sonic game with a gun-totting abomination of a character. So I've been doing the logical thing and 100%'ing the game, playing through each of the 326 possible routes in the game, and you know what, I'm actually starting to enjoy it. Getting past the initial problems, the awful level designs and finding optimal routes, the game has a really nice flow to it that is completely masked as a clumsy newbie to the game. Those issues are are all still there but they diminish in their effects when you can just blitz through the game in like 30 mins a route.

The Rest - Supreme Commander 2 is a strange game that doesn't really deserve to be part of that series. It's not bad but it lacks pretty much everything that the previous titles stood out for. It's still an alright game all things considered. Glitchspace is a pretty neat little game, plays with an idea and doesn't overstay its welcome. Blue Shift is a fairly inconsequential and forgettable expansion to Half-Life but more Half-Life isn't a bad thing. Same, mostly for Half-Life: Redemption, but since it's a mod it lacks in a few more ways. They tried some cool things, and it's a commendable effort all the same.

I never played previous Desperados games and this made me wish I had the nostalgia to appreciate this as a revival. But I did play Shadow Tactics just before Desperados III, so I really appreciated it as the devs refining their tactics game design. Yeah, that final scene was phenomenal!

For January, I beat Untitled Goose Game co-op with a friend. This is a guy who hates video games and therefore doesn't really know the basics to playing a video game. So a level that requires patience, thinking, and about 20 minutes of your free time turned into 45 minutes of him screaming at the screen because a stupid baby game made for stupid babies was outsmarting him. Overall, brought the mood down some, but I think if I had played it solo, I would've really enjoyed it.

I also beat A Hat in Time with DLC. I had already beaten AHIT when it first came out on PS4, but they never released the DLC on the Playstation until sometime last year. Originally, I was just gonna play the DLC, but I found out I had deleted all my save data, so I had to play through the whole game again, since you need most of the Time Pieces to unlock the DLC. Beating the game again was fun, and the DLC was a bit harder as advertised (hated that catering level on the boat).

I also beat Life is Strange: True Colors with DLC. I was surprised by how often I chose choices that were in the minority (you know, besides choosing Ryan over Steph). The graphical difference between this and previous LIS games is huge. I feel like the first chapter kinda drags a little, if only because ALL the trailers spoiled what happens at the end, so I was just constantly going "okay, but when do you DIE?" I did really like the DLC as well, dropping everything and rushing to the phone when it rings because I don't want to be a bad DJ. I think I dampened my mood on the game though because I was rushing to get it done before Legends: Arceus came out, so I didn't stop to appreciate the whole thing while I was playing.

Chernobylite (PC) - Fantastic atmosphere, solid voice acting and an urge to want to see what comes next. Mediocre gunfights and stealth, and unfortuneately very repetitive due to replaying levels over and over - but I couldn't stop playing. Not as good as Metro or STALKER, but good.

Blackwell Unbound (PC) - enjoyed playing in another time period. Decent.

The Blackwell Convergeance (PC) - Better than the second and first..

Aliens: Fireteam Elite (PC) - Gears: Aliens Edition. Co-op obviously elevates this mid-tier cover-shooter. I'm a sucker for anything like Gears of War.

The Blackwell Deception (PC) - Bit better than the third. Series getting better and better.

The Blackwell Epiphany (PC) - Best game in the series. Longest yet. Stakes are high.

Sin and Punishment (N64) - The sequel is top notch action gaming, the first one is also fun, but would have benefitted being released on a console with dual sticks instead.

Puyo Puyo Sun (N64) - I have almost no puzzle gaming experience, though this was pleasant enough. Cheeky cutscenes. Had to play on "easy" difficulty.

Chameleon Twist (N64) - Sparsely detailed levels. Liked the absurdely long tongue. Early 3D camera sucks. Cute, but no must play.

We Were Here Too (PC) - I'm a stupid person, and this game makes me feel even stupider. Was stuck a long time in the maze, cause my friend and I can't read direction correctly.

Chameleon Twist 2(N64) - A bit better than the first. The bosses require a couple more retries - at least the two last. Chill.

Super Mario 64 (N64) - I've embarrasingly not played this more than a couple of hours when I was a kid. Got completely obsessed and played a 10+ hour session one day. Controls perfectly and keeps fresh by adding new spins on levels you've already played.

Two things my friend: a group of bored friends and lots of alcohol.

For real though, we kinda just did a marathon. Woulda done Ultimate as well but everyone was passed out lmao.

I also added the average time I spent playing them in the past too.

It has not been the month when I have completed more games, but I have been playing MANY hours to two of them. Anyway, I've completed:

- Pokémon Light Platinum - Emulated - 04/01 - 45h (with boost).
- Star Wars: Lethal Alliance - 2DS - 21/01 - 4:58h
- Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror - Remastered - PC - 27/01 - 7:42h

I also started Broken Sword III, but I suffered a crush and I decided to abort it (also, I was not enjoying it so much...). BUT, I have been playing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD (about 30h) and Skyrim: Annyversary Edition (about 35h).

New Pokémon Snap - Switch
Guns, Gore & Cannoli - Switch (co-op)

I got a little addicted to (endless) mobile games (and still not done...), so only 2 completions in January for me.
I'm not a big fan of Pokemon but still I enjoyed photographing and the different areas and cute pokemon. Guns and Gore was okay but quite forgettable side-scrolling action game.

Dragon Age: Origins - Warden's Keep DLC- Jan 28 PC

Two of my games were DLC I on a dragon age kick so I expect to be doing a lot of that over the next couple of months. P4G was a carryover ever since the PC version came out glad I was able to finish it finally.

I beat heaven dust. It was an odd little RE clone. Some funny typos in there too. Felt like RE If it were HD for the Snes.
