[SPOILERS]Pikmin 4 has been a fever dream every Nintendo direct for the last 7 years, when it actually showed up I nearly flipped my couch over in excitement watching live. I’m still comprehending how this game is real & that I’m 100% done with it (the best way to play Pikmin), I can safely say it’s another banger that falls short of perfection.
Positives: The game is smooth 95% of the time on the aging Switch, the visuals make me forget it’s running on 10 year old hardware. This game is so beautiful, every Pikmin game is a visual feast! The music is more background noise in this game than in previous entries, but the title theme makes me feel like a little kid embarking on an adventure, like that scene from the ending of Ratatouille when the critic flashes back to his childhood, that was the majority of how my experience with Pikmin 4 felt. The gameplay is as addictive as ever with a metric ton of QOL updates that I didn’t even know we needed. The new Piklopedia is amazing, one of the best features from previous games was made better in ways I couldn’t even dream of as a kid. The secret Olimar campaign was perfect, who knew they would subtlety “remake” Pikmin 1 & turn it into a side mode? All of the fanservice callbacks to the last 3 games made my heart so happy. I’m really happy the Caves came back in this game, I missed them a lot in Pikmin 3. I’m ecstatic that every Pikmin is finally available in the main campaign, purple & white Pikmin FINALLY got their own onions too! I popped off seeing them! Aside from some tough late game challenges, the game was very breezy & laid back which I don’t mind at all. I thought Oatchi was a strange addition & can break the game with how OP he is, but he’s still a lot of fun to ride on & ram into enemies, a good boy!
I’m a little mixed on the main campaign, Pikmin 4 may or may not be a soft reboot to the whole series that takes story elements from all 3 previous games & mixes them up a little. I can’t say it isn’t confusing trying to figure out this new Pikmin lore. I know story isn’t what Pikmin is known for but knowing all of these games for years only for it to maybe have been thrown away (or completely out of order) did rub me the wrong way. We never got an answer so hopefully there’s DLC to clear things up or Pikmin 5 comes sooner than the next 10 years. I’m not crazy about the night expeditions like I thought I’d be. I LOVE the new Glow Pikmin but I don’t care for tower defense gameplay, some of them are unnaturally brutal too. The Dandori battles & missions I could take or leave, some of the post game ones are really fun but others have such narrow windows for success that they suck. Dandori issue, but the moments I stumbled were rare. I’ve been playing Pikmin for 20 years, nothing is too hard after a little trial & error.
I do have some big complaints. In the pre-release demo there was WAY too much dialogue & that carried into the full game. This game has more text than all previous 3 Pikmin games combined, I get this is meant for newcomers but even for a Pikmin veteran like myself there’s a lot of new stuff to learn, I didn’t want to skip anything in fear of missing a tutorial on a new mechanic. I also wanted to give the story a fair shot, 4 just doesn’t like to let you be on your own like previous games did. I want an option to toggle repeated tips off & to have faster dialogue speeds. If this gets more people into Pikmin I’ll deal with it tho. I’m not big on the new Pikmin limitations put in place, I see WHY they implemented these changes but to a long time fan it felt too limiting, I don’t have to like them. Only 3 of the 9 types allowed out at a time? Dumb. I miss mixing all the colors up & running around while the Pikmin sing & trampling everything in our way, the game is easy even with these limits so I don’t see a difference of it being in vs not. Having to unlock how many Pikmin you can have out at a time was an adjustment for sure, it goes pretty quickly but can be irritating starting out with only 20 Pikmin. My least favorite thing about this game just might be how NOTHING respawns after you kill them in the huge levels. They basically become devoid of life, it makes growing your Pikmin population a pain. I miss levels being endlessly replayable, bouncing back & forth between them once enemies would respawn to boost my Pikmin numbers to insane heights. You maybe get 50 of one Pikmin type per day because the only way to grow Pikmin after all enemies are gone is pellets which only grow once a day. Enemies in caves can respawn but not on the surface? It’s such a stupid change that doesn’t make sense to me, it needs to be patched out ASAP. Once you finish everything, it makes the game boring without anything to engage with in the environments.
That being said, Pikmin 4 is still a blast to play. It’s got that same addictive charm that I fell in love with decades ago, it’s still well worth playing despite annoyances sprinkled throughout.

9.3 out of 10 Best game in the series. The graphics are incredible, the gameplay is smooth and modernized. The Dandori challeneges were super fun. Had to replay many of them in order to perfect them. They were long enough to be challenging but not too long to want to retry. Game is fun for the entire 40 hour time it took to get everything. There was never a time it got stale or felt too long. The boss at the end was fun and pretty difficult. The tower defense nigth mode was a fun break at first but got a little bit stale and was not difficult enough. Music was not quite as memeorable as previous games but still atmospheric.Updated 4 Days Ago

Fun game, some challenges like Dandori and the night missions are a good thing to bring fresh air, but for me, it was a little less fun as I was playing Pikmin to not use too much my brain, and some may be a little complicated and/or long. The addition of Otchin is nice, and brings good energy in the Pikmin games.

Only issues I had throughout the playthrough were regarding the use of a pro controller and the auto-targeting.The game itself for the course of getting to the credits never gets more than reasonably challenging. But it crosses that line due to two issues
The whistle and the reticle.
The reticle has an issue where when you are mashing A on a pro controller, the game will suddenly trigger the gyro aiming. Meaning when you are targeting a weak point you'll just suddenly stop hitting the weak point. Which while bad results in the worse side effect of a Pikmin landing and then not doing anything. Leading to a lot of deaths that seem to be outside my control.
The other offender is the whistle. Which is a lot slower to use than in previous entries from what I remember. Having to hold the button down for the max amount of time before anything happens. Tapping the button does nothing. So fast reactions become impossible and everything has to be preemptive.
The combat is extremely weak overall, devolving into a loop of
Mash a for six seconds to attempt to throw things on weak points
Call every Pikmin back after half a second so they don't die in one hit
Wait for the enemy's attack animation to end
Repeat
Other than those issues. The game is great. I wish there was more of a penalty or a reason to try to avoid Pikmin death. But outside of caves, the three major Pikmin types you can infinitely get more of as the pellets respawn and there's no day limit. So you can brute force your way through everything and only use ice, rock or flying Pikmin for specific obstacles.
But I enjoyed my time with it and It captivated me enough to warrant me playing some of the post game content

I love this game! It is soooo cute. The only downside is then I feel bad killing the monsters. I adore Oatchi and Moss. They are my babies!! I loved all the enemies and the challenges were just the right difficulty. My partner and I could not stop laughing at the Pikmin and how silly they were. They were my boys, my battle brothers. This is my first Pikmin game, so it's hard to say how it compares to the other ones, but the style of the gameplay feels like it would fit better in the landscape of the early-2000s era when the first game in the series came out.Still, despite feeling a bit old fashioned, there's still a lot to like here. I really enjoy exploring each map and discovering new artifacts, and collecting sets is fairly satisfying. Discovering new creatures and filling up the index of them at base is also satisfying. There's also a lot of fun writing here between the crew members and the graphics and music are all on point.
One negative I would say is that the controls can sometimes feel a little cumbersome, but it's nothing a player can't get used to in time.
Recommended for fans of early-2000s gaming, as it seems to scratch a similar itch as many games from that era did.

The best entry in the most unique Nintendo franchise, this game is Pikmin at its best. The amount of stuff to do in the game is simply astonishing compared to the other entries in the franchise, to the point where multiple times I thought I'm almost done, only to realize there's more full areas. The daytime exploration is fantastic as usual, even with no time limit. The ability to change the location of your base is a great change that allows the areas to be bigger than ever. The water area is especially great, having a unique gimmick that makes you appoach it differently on the time of day.
I really like how most Pikmin types are cave exclusive until the late game, but you get all onions eventually. Getting that purple onion in the really hard challenge felt incredibly satisfying. The pikmin types are also relatively balanced all around. Reds can now carry fire starters, which make the 2nd to last area really fun. Glow Pikmin are overpowered but they're a limited resource you need to farm, not unlike spicy spray, and also only usable at night or in caves, so they're perfectly fine. Ice Pikmin however are incredibly strong and probably overtuned, they make combat pretty much a joke. Frozen enemies don't drop a corpse but nectar, which is arguably better anyways. You get their onion in the middle of the game too, when it probably should've been the last. Being OP is fine when you're limited, and something like Whites or Winged, which aren't as strong could've probably gotten their onion earlier.
Oatchi is stupidly strong, but the upgrades are non-mandatory if you know that you don't want him to get too strong. But once you upgrade him enough, Oatchi becomes God. He alone will do most tasks better than any amount of Pikmin could. With no time limits it essentially makes it so there's not much reason to multitask with using him as a 2nd captain. Riding on Oatchi's back also makes Pikmin much more safe, since they're all clumped up in one place, not able to get caught in random stuff, which feels a bit like missing the point of commanding this small army. It makes me miss the swarm feature from 1, which does come back as a late game upgrade, but there's not much reason to use it when can just have the Pikmin ride on Oatchi.
The caves make this game Pikmin 2 2, but they're also great. Small self contained puzzles with many levels work surprisingly well. A lot of the most memorable moments of the game happen down here, especially some of the bosses they've brought back from previous games.
And the boss and enemy variety is also great. Pikmin was always fascinating with the creature design, and again, this game as more stuff in it than ever. The Piklopedia makes a return, and reading through the different captains' thoughts about the weird ass creatures in the game is super fun. Same goes for the treasure catalog. The weird names for real objects never stop being funny and memorable.
The Dandori challenges are the most fun thing in any Pikmin game, especially considering how difficult some of the late ones are. I never expected to have to restart a challenge many times in a modern Pikmin game just to beat it, let alone get the platinum. The sage leaf challenges are brutal. This also makes using God Oatchi feel good, because when you have a strict time limit you can't make him do everything. There's only one Oatchi and you need him in a lot of different spots. Choosing what tasks you want to delegate Oatchi to and what you'll have to make do with just your Pikmin is a great element of strategy, especially since you only start with a couple non-flowered Pikmin.
The night expeditions are pretty fun as a little combat challenge, but don't go that much deeper than that. Glow pikmin are fun to use, and the late ones are pretty hard, but overall they're just fine. They're a neat extra feature. The Smoky Progg spam in the later ones is something I don't really like, because it kinda devalues this terror from one into just a regular enemy you can rush with Glow Pikmin. The Water Wraith coming back is always hype though, I think it's done really well, especially in the Sage Leaf challenge where you get the purple onion.
The Dandori battles are definitely the weakest part of the game, but there's not many of them and they serve as a fine distraction.
Olimar's shipwreck tale essentially puts the entirety of Pikmin 1 (in spirit) in this game, and man what a surprise it was, very fun overall, I didn't expect that much more game to be hidden in there.
The story is also surprisingly good, there's one moment specifically that's incredibly memorable. One thing that's a step down from the previous entries is the characters though, your custom character obviously doesn't talk, and Collin, Shepherd, Dingo and co. just don't have the same kind of charm as Olimar, Louie, or the Koppaites from 3.
Pikmin 4 has already definitely become one of my favorite games of all time

Wow oh wow! It’s SO LONG for a Pikmin game! Excellent gameplay, I thoroughly enjoyed the new mechanics the endgame introduced. I was disappointed how late into the endgame you’re able to unlock the final/hidden abilities, primarily referring to Oatchi’s unlimited charging.Considerably more forgiving than P1 & P2, but more challenging (not necessarily harder) than P3.
Easy recommendation for series newcomers and veterans alike, just an absolute blast!

Pikmin 4 is a disappointment, but its more Pikmin which is a net good. What I liked about the game is done much better in Pikmin 1 & 3 (except Oatchi of course). Exploration, graphics, combat balancing, and plot are all traded for a much more accessible game. The map sizes feel smaller and more scarce in order to cram everything in the caves. For only feeling like there are 4 styles of environment, there are 24 caves which make a combined total of 102 sub-levels. Doing a lot of Caves and Dandori Battles back to back gets very tiring. The amount of boring dialog and loading time is also pretty bad. Where I had the most fun in the game was the Olimar side story and the Trial of the Sage Leaf; both of which are not unlocked until you get the credits. Thankfully the game isn't too long and i still plan on 100%ing and replaying in the future.Updated 7 Months Ago

I was truly blown away by the amount they put into this game. This is by far the longest Pikmin game in the series. Gameplay wise, it's very standard Pikmin at its core but with many twists. Firstly you now have more new Pikmin types which add even more variety to the game than before, I especially love the Glow Pikmin because they are very useful and fun to use due to how they have pretty much no weaknesses and are a perfect fit for that type of tower defense gameplay on the new night missions. You also have a partner character, but not in the traditional sense, Oatchi is a dog that can not only command Pikmin on his own, but can also help you travel faster, ram into enemies so all of your Pikmin fall on top of them, and can even give all of your Pikmin a ride across the water! Oatchi is easily one of the best partner characters ever made in a video game due to how insanely useful and resourceful he is. The story was a lot more involved this time around too, even if the premise is very Pikmin 3 where Olimar is yet again stranded on a foreign planet. The characters you meet and work with have tons of dialogue and certainly is a far cry from the isolation of the first game where there was little to no dialogue period. I like how the game fleshed out the world of Pikmin by introducing us to other people from different planets, all of them with their own reasons for arriving, it added a lot of world-building which I thought was very nice and appreciated.
My favorite parts of the game include the Dandori battles and challenges, the nighttime expeditions, and the Olimar's Shipwreck Tale post-game mode. I love the Dandori battles because it allows me to finally experience the multiplayer in some way since I've never been able to play it due to not knowing anyone else in real life who's played Pikmin before. Just like how the Dandori challenges focus on the collecting part of Pikmin, I also love how the Night expeditions focus on combat through a tower defense type of gameplay. The Olimar's Shipwreck Tale mode was an awesome surprise for me since it followed closely to the style of the very first game. Pikmin 1 is actually my favorite in the series and seeing the enemies from those first few games return in this mode was a real treat for me. I absolutely loved how it had a time limit again with the amount of days you have to collect all the parts and if there was something I would always come back to Pikmin 4 for, it would be this mode. I loved it so much that I beat this whole mode in one sitting because of how much I was enjoying it!
My least favorite aspects of the game were just that it's by far the easiest in the series. This was because of how much the game gives you in terms of guidance and tools to the point where it doesn't have much of a survival feel when you can just restart rooms in caves and have so much at your disposal to help you like the crafting tools, upgrades, and especially Oatchi. Another thing I didn't like was how much dialogue there was, it is interesting that there is a lot more worldbuilding in this game than in any previous entry. I just wish there was at least a way to stop them from talking while playing the game because it kind of ruins the atmosphere at times and gets annoying, especially when the dialogue appears directly in the middle of the screen and gets in the way of what I'm doing.
Overall I absolutely love Pikmin 4, with all that they've added in like the dandori battles, nighttime missions, and Oatchi, it truly feels like a worthy 4th entry and is easily the best new Nintendo game I've played in years!

Top:)Updated 9 Months Ago

1. Fantastic gameplay. I’d say it’s the best in the series. Oatchi was an excellent addition and I absolutely loved him. 2. The post-game was pretty extensive and comparable or even surpasses 2’s post game. Really cool stuff.
3. The house area is top 2 best area in Pikmin.
4. Loads of things to do. So many missions to accomplish and things go explore. It was really excellent in that sense and captured some of the best of Pikmin which is the discovery and figuring out how each area works. Also night expeditions were awesome.
5. But there didn’t feel like as many surprising moments. It was mostly things we saw before with some remixes like the double emperor bulborbs battle and the disco daddy long legs. I can’t point to many new things besides the ice Pikmin and Oatchi. They are great additions and they added a lot to the game. But the game fell short in other areas.
6. Pikmin 3 and 2 had a ton of new stuff and surprising moments like rescuing Olimar at the end of 3 from a nightmare creature or running into the water wraith for the first time in Pikmin 2. Pikmin 4 didn’t quite have stuff to that level.
7. The bosses in Pikmin 3 almost felt cinematic at times and most of them were fresh. A lot of the bosses here didn’t feel as exciting or new as those bosses. Plus so many of them were borrowed from 1 and 2 that this game loses a bit of its identity. The final boss was really cool and I loved that, but that was the only boss that was as good as the ones in 3.
8. Pikmin 4 didn’t have some of those shocking moments that really stuck with me besides the final boss and maybe the house area.
9. Characters aren’t as good as 1–3 either. There was so many of them and I didn’t like that they were all mostly created from the very limited character creator. Many of the rescues were duplicates. I wish the player character was actually a character. The best characters are Olimar and Louie, but that’s hardly surprisingly. The rescue Corps was kind of meh. Collin always kind of bugged me, he always seemed disappointed in everything and he wasn’t that funny. Dingo and the pilot were kind of funny. The captain I didn’t like too much either, I hated her face too. I also miss the scenes within the spaceship in 3, felt like a downgrade in this game where we just saw textboxes of the characters taking at night.
I know a listed a lot of faults, but I’m being a bit picky with some things and the pros far outweigh the cons for me.
Overall, I’d give this a 8.5/10. Great game, I’d put it above Pikmin 1, but the faults hold it back from surpassing 3 and 2.

A lovely game, but I prefer 3. The lack of a day limit as well as many other things removes that feeling of mystery and isolation the series had up until this point. And while I know that's not what it's aiming for and I can appreciate that, it also didn't feel like it fully devoted in the other direction either. So tonally it's just... In a weird spot for a Pikmin game and it doesn't hit the mark that made 3 so special to me. Though, I do appreciate the option to have that experience in Olimar's Shipwreck Tale. Back on some critique, though, the caves ended up making the game feel quite bloated, even if it could be beaten in 30 hours. This is nice in some ways and makes the game feel beefy and deserving of its long development time, but their repetitive themes kind of wear down the charm, I think. Overall, personally for me it was missing something... But still just objectively a great game.Updated 9 Months Ago

Nintendo absolutely knocked this one out of the park. It takes everything you thought you knew about Pikmin games and turns it on its head. The change in viewpoint from top down to level is a huge upgrade and makes you feel much closer to the environment and the pikmin. Oatchi is a game changer, I couldn't imagine playing Pikmin without him now, especially with the ways that he's evolved the gameplay. The additional content, like dandori challenges and battles, add a fun amount of variety to the game. The maps are teeming with personality and style, and all of the post game content is where the game really shines. When you reach the "end" of the game (which really is more of a false ending), the experience would be more "fine" than "excellent," but it's all of the content after the first "end" that really takes this game to the next level. It's one of those games where you would be doing yourself a disservice to not complete all that it has to offer you. Don't overthink this one, it's a must play.Updated 9.5 Months Ago

Another fantastic entry in the Pikmin series. This was my second go around with the series, as I started off with Pikmin 3 Deluxe on switch. It had been a while since I played a pikmin game, but 4 does a good job of reacquainting you to the mechanics and gameplay of the series, including the new features. While the tutorial was a bit longer than I would have liked, once you get into it, there's nothing quite like it. Pikmin isn't my #1 Nintendo series or anything, but it just scratches that organization and efficiency itch in my head. It is very fun and streamlined to get all treasures and goodies in the areas and 100% complete them. I finished each area as I went along, and enjoyed the world, music, and atmosphere this series has to offer. After getting the first ending, there is so much postgame content on offer, it really gives you a bang for your buck. While I found all treasures, rescued all castaways, completed the piklopedia, finished all areas 100%, and beat the final boss, there was even some postgame stuff that I chose to not engage with. Pikmin 4 creates a full and varied experience with many different challenges and goals the game throws your way. I'm glad I stuck around to see the true ending, and the wait was certainly worth it for this fantastic game. While it isn't perfect and I have nitpicks, overall I would strongly recommend this game to both veterans and newcomers to the series, as there is something here for everyone.Updated 9.5 Months Ago

At its core it's a Pikmin game but it's way too overbearing and restricting. Feeling like I'm still in the tutorial 10 hours in (based on the near constant screen-covering dialogue about basic mechanics), Most Pikmin are basically useless, the side content (caves, dandori challenges, etc.) being required but also the worst parts of the game because the core gameplay is exploring and finding stuff that way, etc. So much stuff just feels pointless. Also not really a fan of being forced to rush through one of the areas because something is chasing me when I've been able to 100% every area in the first attempt up to that point.

Loved the game, I really wish the game gets DLC. I would love for the co-op from the third game to come back.I would also love som kind of cave maker. The final knitt pick is that the creatures you defeate should come back after a couple of days like in the other games.

Pikmin 4 is another incredible entry in the Pikmin franchise. With you in control of an army of Pikmin, you must rescue all stranded and find Sparklium to power up your ship. It is an easy game and probably the easiest since Pikmin 1. No real challenges until the post game with Dandori challenges AND that's only if you want to platinum them. The other complaint is how big the environments are for so little treasure at the surface. Most treasures are in caves, and it feels like caves are there to make the length of the game longer(way too many of them).
Love everything else added on Pikmin 4. You can buy upgrades for your character and the new mechanic, Oatchi. Oatchi is a dog that can carry pikmin through water, can attack all enemies, and can carry treasures to the ship. Once fully upgraded, Oatchi is a menace to all creatures. Destroying everything and carrying heavy treasures while you and the pikmin do another task. Oatchi is also incredible in the night-time expeditions in which you need to defend a tower to get glow sap for fellow travelers.
Pikmin 4 is beautiful and well made. It's easier than Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, but there is a lot of content and improvements in this installment. Plus we Pikmin fans love collecting everything so it is a no-brainer for us.
