This is my first game in the Mario series, as I don't count Mario 64, which I bounced from after a few hours. I've played it in Mario 3D Allstars package on Nintendo Switch. The game is very good, especially in terms of level design and animations. There is a cool concept with rotating planets on which you can walk, gravitation work and many other interesting mechanical solutions. The drawbacks are that the camera doesn't always move the way I would like it to, especially when flying and underwater, there is no achievement system besides star level completion and levels are sometimes too slow. Music is okay but on some planets it gets repeatitive. The coolest thing for me were the levels using the spring. Joycones from the nintendo switch detached from the screen greatly diversify the gameplay, mostly in levels where you need to grab blue stars to get to them. The game's length is not exaggerated. Some levels required a few tries, but overall the game is not super hard. The secret levels are amazing. I definitely recommend it for those who would like to try a Mario adventure, for a game from 2007 it is simply amazing. If only the 2nd part comes out for the nintendo switch I will buy it right away, moreover I intend to play other games in the series.

One of the best Mario games out there. Insanely new concept for the time back then with a lot of funny new mechanics and cool stages in there. I know that I really liked it as a kid but for some reason never finished it before. Got through it pretty fast because the first half of the game felt like muscle memory.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

My favorite Mario game. The movement is very fun to play around with, especially when combined with the incredible level design. I don't like the levels with tilt controls very much, but every other star is great. The game also has one of my favorite soundtracks, and it works well along with the great visuals to create a strong sense of atmosphere.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

When camera and controls work as intended, it's best 3d Mario and one of the most touching, inspiring and unforgettable gaming experiences hands down. When camera and controls don't work as intended, I want to strike my Wii remote against the wall because of how unfair it feels.
Not enough moves, duh.
So yeah, never listen to anybody and have zero expectations regarding a particular game, otherwise you'll leave rather disappointed.

There are some magical moments in this game where the highs are so high. I loved Gusty Garden Galaxy especially. But on the other hand, there were a bunch of worlds that I don't consider fun at all. Especially all those water worlds where it's a drag to control Mario underwater and some of the racing ones felt like filler. I guess overall the level design is inconsistent, though I would still describe it as inventive. Just not fully realized until Galaxy 2. People seem to really love the story but for me it just gets in the way of the gameplay (overly big hub, unskippable long text boxes). It does have the strength of being one of the most atmospheric 3D Mario games. Perhaps that melancholic mood would disappear if the hub was smaller and more populated.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

Mario Galaxy holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first games i played when i was gifted the wii when I was a kid. I don't remember much of my time playing it at the time, but as soon as I picked it up on the switch thanks to the Mario 3D All Stars collection, it was like those memories came back and I went back to that time, playing it for the first time, listening to its charming, melancholic yet calming music; listening to Rosalina's tragic story while sitting on the ground with the Lumas, this time fully understanding it and the meaning of "She's sleeping under the tree on the hill". Differently from other Mario games, Sunshine excluded, Mario galaxy is packed with pieces of story told through small talk with other characters, told through the various level environments and told directly through Rosalina and the main narrative. What really stood out to me, music aside, is how well designed the levels are, each and every one of them telling their own story, with some giving off a "lost in space" vibe, other trasmitting the "space explorer" vibe and others so out of context with the theme of space that can either throw you off the immersion or tell you "it's so vast out there, in the dark, cold space surrounding us, that why couldn't there be a whole planet where penguins take swimming lessons and live happily?" That is what I love about this game. Space is always been a topic to fascinate not only scientists, but every last one of us, big and unknown as it is, giving us infinite possibilities to imagine what could possibly be out there. Well, Super Mario Galaxy perfectly conveys that feel, and maybe that's why I felt like I was a little kid again, thrown in front of something so vast I can't understand but won't stop trying to.
WELCOME NEW GALAXY!!

Review in brazilian portugueseQuase 20 anos depois e o jogo ainda é inovador!

Brilliant direction for the 3D Mario series.Good
- it’s interesting feeling being able to jump off a seemingly endless drop but having gravity pull you around to the other side of the planet.
- the motion controls gameplay segments are really fun. Like rolling the ball, and surfing.
- shooting star bits at enemies and other things is fun. There’s also an incentive to collect star bits by feeding the fat luma to unlock a new galaxy.
- the controls are very smooth. Spinning is a nice “second chance”
- soaring through space from one asteroid to another feels great
- the power ups are a lot of fun. And a lot of new ones. They are used in a very fun way with the stage designs.
- bowser’s hair is styling
- the gravity gameplay is really creative and fun. Both 2D segments and 3D.
- I like the story book segments. Learning about Rosalina's past was interesting. It provided me incentive to progress in the game to unlock new chapters.
Bad
- the game is a tad too easy. Your platforming doesn’t even have to be perfect. If you nick and edge, the game will plop you right over it. The overall level designs were easier than other Mario games too.

Super Mario Galaxy is so close to being one of the greatest Mario games, but for me if it was a few things that in my opinion bring it down. The forced motion control sections are a cumbersome and not very fun in my opinion. The ball rolling, the manta ray and bubble stars. I am of the belief that the game wouldn't suffer much if these were not apart of the game. I'm not in the motion controls are always bad camp as I think most of them work very well, but these I really could not stand.
The camera can be troublesome at times, which is an important aspect for a platformer.
And, I'm of the opinion that having to do the entire game a second time for that 100% really is just padding. Luigi doesn't play that differently to Mario.
Still, there's no no denying its quality as one of Mario's best.

Note: Played on Switch through the 3D All Stars Collection and on a pro controller. To say I was disappointed with Super Mario Galaxy is an understatement.
To start with the positives, "Mario in space" sounds like a jump the shark moment for the franchise, but this is the real deal. This is more than just Mario with a space backdrop. Everything from the levels to the story all revolves around the idea of stars and planetary travel. Speaking of the story, it is the most cinematic in the series, and it is a nice change of pace. Graphics are above average for Wii standards, and the art direction is great. Planets, enemies and npcs, they all look unique and are well designed.
The soundtrack is the first in the series that uses a full orchestra, and it is amazing. I have it on CD and listen to it regularly it is that good.
The spin is the greatest addition to the Mario series ever. It is helpful for both platforming and combat, and I hope it makes some sort of return in future games.
I enjoy the star bit and coin system. Coins restore your health and star bits are used to stun enemies and unlock new levels. Being able to attack enemies with either a spin or a stomp to specifically get either star bits or a coin is a nice touch too.
Power ups make a return, and while I don't like how the majority of them are on a timer, it is actually not as a way to make the player less powerful but to provide quick puzzles you have to navigate before the time is up. The Bee Suit is my favorite by far, the ability to fly, even for a brief period, gives you alot of freedom on how to go after stars.
Levels usually consist of small areas that you jump from one to the next. Simply put, going after stars is fun, well, fun until certain issues arise.
Complaining time, and I've got a lot to say.
To start with the bear basics of game design, the camera. On the Wii, the camera is controlled by rotating it into fixed positions using the d-pad. However, on Switch this is moved to the right stick. The d-pad is unused, why not keep it there? It gives the illusion of free control of the camera, and I found myself hitting the stick in vain trying to move the camera so I can actually SEE what's ahead of me, only to be met with a "nope." More times than not the camera is pointing in the most inconvenient way, and it swings haphazardly. With every camera change, your controls change to fit the new POV, which more times than not sends you running around where you aren't holding the stick. This was incredibly frustrating throughout the whole playthough.
Depth perception was another issue. Jumping from one space object into the orbit of another, or even just the act of running around a planet, can be confusing for the eyes. This might be a me issue, but I also found it hard to gauge where I was going to land before and during a jump.
In terms of general controls, it is clear that this game isn't ment to be played with any sort of stick other than a Wii-Nunchuk remote. I tested my controller multiple times during my playthough, this is not a hardware issue. I found that many times while trying to move left or right Mario would start running in circles. Basic moves such as the side jump felt near impossible to pull off. I don't understand the technical aspects of stick input, but you'd think this wouldn't be an issue.
Motion controls were a staple on every Wii game, and of course Super Mario Galaxy has them. Allocating the spin to a button instead of waggle is a good start, but there is 0 reason why menus (which appear after every star is collected, for instance) shouldn't be able to be navigated using buttons. You want to know my solution? Put the camera on the D-Pad and have the right stick be a cursor for pull stars and star bits.
In all, Super Mario Galaxy needs more than just a direct port to modern consoles. It needs help. It needs a camera that actually functions, it needs a retooling for buttons and sticks, it needs to fix the movement. It would be a disservice to the amazing parts of the game by letting these terrible aspects ruin the experience.

I would give this a 95 if it weren’t for the motion controls they are always forced to figure a way to shoehorn in from the Wii era. Any way you play it’s awkward. But this game holds up incredibly well and the vibe and gameplay is just exquisite. Soundtrack is stellar or should I say, INTERSTELLAR!!! Damn I’m good.
It’s just a ton of fun and like any Mario game isn’t very difficult. It’s just so damn enjoyable and the controls are so good and the levels so creative that it doesn’t matter! Sure the camera can be wonky sometimes but outside of that the controls and gameplay are flawless. The Bowser fights are unfortunately super lame and simple.
This is a classic and still rocks all these years later even with the shitty motion controls still intact. I find myself still GRAVITATING to it! Heheheheheheeeeeeeeeeoopoooooop!

Sometimes, there's an awesome game you don't really love, although you're totally aware of how awesome it is. Super Mario Galaxy is one of them, for me.I'll skip the loveable part. There are thousands of reviews telling how great and inventive SMG is. Let's see why I didn't click.
Super Mario Galaxy hesitates between the greatness (mainly during the discovery phase) and the horrifying (roughly, once you've got more than 50 stars). We want to salute the technical quality of the whole thing, the clear desire not to lock Nintendo's most famous IP into a formula (a desire that has been mostly buried until recently, btw). But. Thing is, I've never been comfortable with this more than atypical Mario, where three-quarters of the landscapes are dark and nocturnal, and where you spend most of your time upside down. More than the linear aspect criticized here and there, more than the stacking of tests giving the impression of being scraps from a random Mario Party (both are true, and both are exaggerated), it's really this slightly anxiety-provoking, sometimes stressful side, which disturbed the most, to the point of giving up many times before seeing the credits.
I wouldn't pretend to say what a "good Mario" should be or not, but IMHO, it should be something fast, colorful, happy, not too hard but not too easy. And above all: something totally addictive where I don't have, after a while, the feeling of forcing myself to beat it.
That being said, that's quite an awesome game ;)

As many issues as this game has, I spent so much time on this as a kid and it's so iconic I just can't give it a lower score. Super Mario Galaxy is a 3D platformer, but with the main twist being well, SPACE. Constant gravity changes and the spin move allow for some very unique gameplay mechanics. Due to this, there are obviously TONS of oversights and crazy things you can do once you get good at the game. This makes the replayability incredibly high, there are so many shortcuts and fun glitches you can do I can't even list them all. As much as I love this game, I will admit it does have some VERY crap levels, such as the bob-omb garbage dumbs, bubble thing, and star balls. This game also uses surprisingly little motion control for a Wii game, really it's just the cursor and shaking for the spin move. One small touch I like is that you can use the nunchuck to spin as well, which I use instead so I can keep my cursor focused. When you 100% the game, you unlock Luigi mode. Unfortunately, this basically just acts as a separate save file. Really all that changes is Luigi can jump higher and run faster basically making a new game +, and the cosmic clone ghost are harder. I know damn well this game doesn't deserve this high of a rating and has a lot of issues, but judging by I played through this at least 10 times really shows something if I'm still enjoying it all these years later.X Rating: 1/5 - Rosalina hot and the Honey Queen moment is... uh... something...
