This game was not at all what I expected going in- I figured it would be a game where you had five minutes to finish with various methods of extension or NG+. Not even close. What I got was more of a visual novel with (trivial) RPG like segments, the story being in media res during the 5 minute battle with the final boss, where you are trying to recover memories (the RPG segments) in order to be successful.

The VN segmemts include some choices, a few leading to branches that decide which memories you get. Segments can be replayed for differnet choices but mostly end up in the same place.

The RPG segments are often out of order, and are encapsulated in a way where they don't affect each other (levels, gold equipment are all preset). The difficulty level is so low that Auto is pretty much always fine, including for boss battles. At some point its easiest to just abuse Repel because battling is irrelevant. There are also missions that can be accomplished in the RPG segments, usually some quick "side quests", though a couple are some mini games that require defeating the high score, which can be quite obnoxious.

Overall, I actually thought this game was great at what it was trying to be. The characters are mostly good, though the ending segments are a bit out of the blue and I didn't care for what they did with a late game character. At 10-15 hours it doesn't overstay its welcome as either an RPG or a VN. I picked it up cheap, and I think it was great for the price. I can see some of the dislike for the game due to the original $40 price though.

It uses the RPG genre to convey the story but the RPG elements are irrelevant. It's more of a visual novel with a world map and town. The gameplay elements are pointless and the story is super cliche.

Not a good game.

Enjoyed the story, music and enemy design, but the gameplay plays too much like old NES RPGs to be really fun.

The Longest 5 Minutes is a short game. At the price of $39.99, I expected a little more from this game. At best, it's a passable mini RPG with a very simple storyline. There's not much else to say.
