There are the obvious classic ones that literally defined the genre, like Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night.

I've also enjoyed a few others like Guacamelee and Aria of Sorrow. I know this is still a rather popular genre but I haven't that many of them in the few recent years.

I don't know if that fully fits the Metroidvania definition, but I've also enjoyed the Shantae games.

I haven't really played that many on thinking about it... Super Metroid, Hollow Knight (haven't finished, but great), Shantae (aside from Half Genie Hero which does not fit).

I've played a couple Castlevanias in that vein but didn't finish them and they don't really stand out in particular in my mind. Ori and the Blind Forest and Aquaria both seem good but haven't gotten far with either so can't comment... So yeah just those above I guess.

I don't know if I can give really a top 10 for these, but I quite enjoy them. So just a couple of titles that I remember very fondly would be:

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is my personal favorite from the Castlevania series I've played. It's a great game, but the nostalgia factor doesn't let me really gauge how good or bad it aged. But I love it and I've replayed it many many times.
Dust: An Elysian Tail was fantastic for the time, and was the first indie game for which I went "Wow....This is gorgeous". Art doesn't have the same impact anymore, and I'd now consider it kinda average. However, mechanically it's still pretty fun when you get more and more used to the moveset, and it can be very charming. I quote a particular phrase from it to this day for how funny it was to me at the time, and I think it's still a pretty good game.
Momodora: Reverie under the Moonlight is another one that holds a special place in my heart. That one is much more simple than most, but it nails what it wants to do. It has one or two very questionable decisions, but I adored it all the way through.
Touhou Luna Nights is one I played earlier this year, and it suprised me with how good it was. It has pretty interesting time mechanics that I haven't seen executed so well in the genre, and it can be really challenging if not taken seriously.

Those are the ones that I can come up from the top of my head. I'm way more into the 'Vania' side of the 'Metroidvania', but I digress. I'm sure I'd be singing praises to Hollow Knight if I had gotten around to it by this point, but unluckily it's still buried in my backlog...Will play it eventually. Definitely.

I quote a particular phrase

What phrase is that? I enjoyed Dust quite a bit. Probably one of the best XBL Arcade games.

Damn! I had completely forgotten to mention Messenger in my reply. Shame on me! Not only one of my favorite games of the past few years, but also a game I'm always proud to mention since it was made in my home town.

Would Demon's Crest be considered a Metroidvania? It's been years since I've played very much of it, so likely forgetting things. I suppose based off what I remember it kind of is.

The Messenger is in my backlog (I promise, Tiamat)

You caught me! It's not really since it's level based rather than one interconnected world. But you still backtrack and unlock new areas with new abilities, upgrades etc. So I'm leaving it.

Oh boy, I love metroidvanias.

Here are my top 13 metroidvanias that I've beaten - from best to worst (in parentheses my respective rating):

Note: I'm not big on genre distinction so probably there's one or two games on that list that people would argue are not metroidvanias.

1. Hollow Knight (5/5)
2. Blasphemous (4.5/5)
3. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (4/5)
4. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (4/5)
5. Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (4/5)
6. Gucamelee! 2 (4/5)
7. Gucamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition (4/5)
8. The Messenger (4/5)
9. Journey to the Savage Planet (3/5)
10. SteamWorld Dig 2 (3/5)
11. SteamWorld Dig (3/5)
12. Axiom Verge (3/5)
13. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (3/5)

Backlogged/Retired:
- Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight - Backlogged
Tried it for an hour already and it did not grab me. Probably will end up in the bottom half of the list when I eventually get around it.

- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Retired
Great game but I managed to get myself stuck between hard enemies and could neither go back nor forth. Died probably >30 times then retired it. Maybe I will give it another shot one day. Would probably put it before Ori and the Blind Forest if I ever manage to complete it.

- Sundered - Retired
The hord modus is super frustrating, otherwise quite interesting game.

From the top of my head, Metroid Zero Mission is the best one followed by Castlevania Symphony of the Night. I absolutely love Sundered, but I guess I'm alone in this one.

Severed is a Metroidvania? That means I actually managed to beat two of them. Great game with very unusual gameplay.

Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest. Both of them are visually stunning and the gameplay aspects are excellent. Haven't played the Will of the Wisps, but I suspect that would be great also. Seriously though, play them, you won't be disappointed.

Its been a genre that's grown on me quite a bit over the last few years. But here are my top picks.

- Guacamelee 1 and 2 equally are my favorites. Absolutely phenomenal games that need more attention.
- the messenger
- bloodstained rotn
- alwas legacy and awakening are both solid
-ori and the blind forest
- metroid zero mission and fusion
- while axiom verge is good i think its over hyped compared to some of these others.
- blaster master zero games are solid too.

Im sure I've forgotten a few but if I recall any ill add them. Its funny because I was just browsing thru the eshop as I want to add another metroidvania title to play during the winter. Love a good MV during the dark days of winter for some reason lol

I've only played a handful of "metroidvania" games, although I highly recommend Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow on Nintendo DS.

260 at the moment, nothing crazy but I do love a good Metroidvania.

Knytt Underground (the only one I’ve actually completed in this list)
Aquaria
Yoku’s Island Express
Ori and the Blind Forest
Hollow Knight
Metroid Prime (am I allowed to include that?)

I am currently banging my head against a bug-shaped brick wall with Hollow Knight. This is the second time I’ve attempted to play it.

The first time was on PC and I got so frustrated with its difficulty and punishing checkpoints that after about 15 hours I started using a trainer to give me infinite everything, invulnerability and anti-gravity jumps. I ended up ruining it, getting completely lost whilst breaking the game’s progression.

This time I’m on PS4 and have persevered and actually got a bit further than I did before, albeit with much frustration and rage, but also with grim-faced satisfaction and a Sense of Pride and Accomplishment™️. But I’m stuck on an important boss battle and am totally sick of dying and travelling back and forth between the last save point and that.

I’m considering giving up again and replaying later on PC, this time making more conservative use of the trainer only when I really need it. I’m too old and my temperament too fragile to put up with this sort of gruelling difficulty. (Also, it’s a PS Plus game and I’m not renewing my subscription next month as I don’t play any multiplayer games at all now.)

So why do I bother? I just love this game’s melancholic vibe, its aesthetic, its surprises, its humour, its level design, its characters and its perfection of the Metroidvania formula.

AM2R is a very good and very well done Metroid 2 fan-made remake. It was taken down by Nintendo, of course. But it's still being patched and still getting support.A few months ago, a launcher was released for the game. You can find that here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/4bks9rc7x3l3i6k/AM2RLauncher.zip/file

You need to provide the original AM2R_11.zip file tho. but it shouldn't be too hard to find. You basically unzip the launcher to it's own folder, then it will download the latest patches and ask you for the AM2R_11.zip file (which is AM2R 1.1) and it will apply the latest patches for you. It's very straightforward. The game is at version 1.5.2 now. Many updates since the original release. Version 1.0 was the demo, version 1.1 was the original full version release file.

Enjoy!

Hey jumping into say thanks for this! I'd snagged the game when it was released though haven't played it very much yet, but I had no idea it was still being updated. Good to know it'll be fully updated whenever I do get around to it.

But that link leads to a private file. I found a working link from the reddit post about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/AM2R/comments/iajukx/am2r_152_release_the_am2rlauncher/

and the launcher itself https://www.mediafire.com/file/zrj72u6g2mduev8/AM2RLauncher.zip/file
