My Xbox 360 has been working immaculatey since 2010 but has recently started malfunctioning. I was watching Reservoir Dogs on DVD when the disc drive just opened on its own. I thought it was just a freak thing so I got up to close it, but it then closed and opened by itself a few times. After that it worked without issue for a week or two but recently it started to go completely haywire. This makes playing games very tense as I could just lose a lot of progress and it's annoying for watching DVDs (yeah I watch films on 360).I originally thought it might be the open tray button having issues but I severely doubt this is the issue because I thoroughly cleaned it many times (I know its very sensitive) but I know nothing about technological mechanisms so I dont know how any of this works. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Is this a faceplate model? I wonder if it could be rubbing on the eject button under vibration.. That’s the only thing I can think of right now.

Not a solution for the disc tray problem but if I'm remembering right, didn't the 360 get an update to allow you to install game disc data to the hard drive and only use the disc for verification? I think if you did that, you'd have a short window to close the tray again without losing game progress.

I think I did that back in the day when I was having a similar issue.

My 360 is just a regular black Slim model so no faceplate (thanks anyway).

Yeah you can install from the disc alright. I could use that if all else fails.

And I'll look into an issue with gears.

Thanks.
