Novel concept that's pretty well executed. But it's a bit too unforgiving at times to a frustrating degree. Still pretty fun.

I really feel like if you fixed the time crystal mechanics, this game might actually be okay (or even on the lower end of good). But too often I ran out of ammunition or time powers in levels with no way to refill them except starting the entire level over. I could tolerate a certain level of jank with the broken shooting, since your shots hit more often than they miss, but when your resources are so scarce that every shot counts, there’s really no excuse for it.

This game is one of the most unique 3D Platformers I have ever played and has inspired me in multiple ways.

First off, let's get the bad stuff out of the way:
1. Having to match time crystals in order to get the time control ability.
On some levels, it is required to have a specific time control ability in order to progress. However, if you do not have said time control ability and there are not at least 3 time crystals of the time control ability you need available, you will have to restart the level. This is by far the worst part of the game.
2. The side flips and backflips.
Sometimes, Blinx will side flip or backflip unintentionally and cause the player to be vulnerable in the process. A minor annoyance.
3. The game does not allow you to own more than one sweeper.
In the shop, if you purchase a sweeper and then purchase another sweeper, the first sweeper you purchased will not be in some sort of inventory system in which you can pick which one you need at any given time and instead makes you have to repurchase the sweeper you already bought at full price. Again, another minor annoyance.

Now onto the great parts of the game:
1. The core gameplay of having to defeat every time monster on the stage in order to finish the level is a very unique and fun concept.
2. The time controls allow the player to experiment in areas a lot of games would never allow you to, such as fighting a boss with a recorded version of yourself.
3. The soundtrack is still one of my favorite video game soundtracks to this day and if you have not listened to it I highly recommend it.
4. The character designs and overall art style the game has is really up my alley. Both cute and creepy at the same time.
5. Although some of the time monsters are not my favorite in terms of how they interact with the player, the enemy mechanics make the game challenging yet fun and allow unique situations to occur, making the player need to think quickly and carefully for their next move.

Easy to learn, hard to master. Incredibly underrated game.

This game had some cool ideas, but it's art direction and story feel feels a little disconnected and sterile. It's a shame, because there are some fun challenges!
(And some bs ones...)

One bad game design decision over the other, with no end in sight. I genuinely do not understand how people could like this. Theres a dumb flip jump that sometimes goes off when you don't need it which makes you vulnerable. You have to get time powers by collecting tokens and matching them like a weird puzzle game instead of just grabbing the power ups like items. You only have one hit point in theory, but your health bar works by having the game rewind to right before you got hit if you got hit, which likely will just get you hit by the same thing again. Lastly the game focuses a lot on combat despite blinx controlling extremely sluggishly and having time powers that don't lend themselves well to combat. I wanted to like this game a whole lot, but I can't in good heart say I had a very good time playing much of any of this. I heard the "Platinum hits" version of the game has major difficulty tweaks to make the game less frustrating, but that's not the version I own so what I experienced was very unpleasant.

Platinum Hits version is significantly better balanced than the black label version, legit gets rid of the stupid difficulty curve in so many different ways that plagued the original release. Black label of the game is like, a 4 for trash balance for most normal players.

So, I gotta be real, I actually really loved this game at the start, it was so surreal and unlike anything I had experienced that I was sold right away. Unfortunately, as it progressed, it got less and less fun and more of an exercise in frustration. After missing the last hit on the final boss and dying (after almost two hours of attempting), I ragequit and just watched the ending on YouTube. The final levels frustrated me so much that it honestly made it hard to recall how much I loved it at the beginning.

Blinx isn't the perfect game, but it's certainly the best platformer on Xbox. Calling it a platformer is misleading though, because this is hardly one set in traditional platform values. Blinx gets incredibly difficult, so much so that it probably won't please some folks. This isn't a Crash Bandicoot game where you die a few times on a boss, figure it out, and move on. This one will take time and a real investment to master.

There's no way to make it all the way through Blinx without having to go back to previous levels. You need more money and time powers too often to make it through in one shot. And it's designed this way. And for as difficult as it is, I can't really say that it's so much fun as it is very enjoyable. Blinx doesn't hit you the same way Mario does. Instead, it becomes more of a game of "You are not going to beat me, game" than it does "Oh, my God I love this little cat!"

Granted Blinx is a cute and a well-designed (if almost completely silent) character. And he is more than a potential mascot for Xbox (though somehow I think Master Chief will remain synonymous with the 'box more than Blinx ever will), he is the future of Xbox games. This is the first significant use of the hard drive. The first real sampling of what makes the Xbox unique from the other consoles. Developers will begin to get creative with the hard drive. Maybe not so much next year, but certainly by 2004 we will see a lot more uses of the hard drive than just having the power of TiVo. And for that, Blinx deserves a spot in anyone's video game library. Not only is it a solid, challenging, and beautiful game, but it's also a significant step in the direction of the Xbox. And while not the best game on Xbox, it may very well be the most important one yet.
