yet another game i used to cook the HELL out of when i was much younger

memories of this game include playing with friends, and this one specific glitch that lets you dye your car into glitched colors by getting shoved between a wall and a bus and floating into the sky until you snap back onto the floor based on some setting you did in the customization menu earlier

which is just nuts

In the year 2009 when I got a copy of the game from a friend, my computer couldn't get playable frame rates. More than a decade later I bought a gaming laptop but didn't have a 10 year old game on my wish list. On finding out about the remastered version, I decided to finish it and finally got my Burnout license in 2022. Between these 13 years, I once got close to finishing the game in 2017 on a non gaming desktop computer but couldn't muster the strength to make the credits roll.

Pros
Open-world driving game
Finding drive-thrus and events through the city
Crashing through billboards and fences
Taking down cars driving around the city to earn them
Different events the game offers
Race – get to the finish line, but there’s different ways to get there
Marked Man – Get to the destination without totaling your car
Road Rage – Takedown a certain amount of cars before the time runs out
Stunt Run – Rack up points while doing different stunts
Burning Route – Get to the destination before the time limit
Different types of car for different purposes
Able to go through a drive-thru (auto shop, spray, and gas station) in the middle of the event
Able to change the day of time if you don’t like driving at night or day

Cons
Navigate to multiple screens just to quit the game
The Takedown camera while racing sometimes takes awhile before you’re back driving
Wished they had no takedown when you’re not doing an event
The navigation to turn on a street is a little unclear sometimes
Can’t tell if it’s a sharp turn
No fast travel of some sort if you want to do an event on the other side of the city
Need to go to the junk yard just to change cars (there’s only 5)

This is my first and probably only racing game. It was a bit difficult for me to get through, but that's only because it's my only racing game. If you like racing games, by all means, play it. This is probably the best one out there. But if you're like me, and you're used to playing anything else, you can probably pass.

There's no story to speak of here.

Gameplay-wise, it's fun. Each race is perfectly challenging for your skill level, and it's fun to even just drive around. Doing stunts, crashing your car, racing, everything in this game is such a good time that thinking about it its hard to settle on a 7/10. But, I took frequent breaks while playing this game, just simply because racing games have a hard time holding my attention.

For a racing game, this game is the best of its breed. But it's still a racing game, with a limited story, but stellar gameplay. If you're into this kind of thing, I definitely recommend it.

Many hours spent in this shiny city with the very enjoyably crashing mechanics, decent for co op play and one of the game that came with my original Xbox 360 - one of the first games I played.

Overrated. Open world doesn't work well for single player campaign. Can't restart events if you lose. Having to constantly pause race to look at map is annoying. Vehicles do handle well though. Not as good as past Burnout games.

Mixed game. They essentially destroyed the burnout series with this game, and removed a lot of what the made the other Burnout games enjoyable and original. However, the game is still a lot of fun, and there's a lot of enjoyment to be had driving around the city and country smashing things up. If you go in, not expecting a burnout racing game, can be a fun game.

Perfectly fine but barebones racing game. Plenty of fun to be had collecting and racing dozens of cool and interesting cars but the lack of discernible plot (here, have a race car, now go do whatever 'til you get bored) makes the game unfocused but enjoyable.

The Burnout series of racing games has always received high praise for allowing men everywhere to live out their childhood fantasy of causing huge traffic accidents. Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box tried something new for the series by creating an open world environment for the player to explore. The gamble paid off by elevating a fairly static gaming mainstay to a new level.

Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box takes place in the fictional peninsula town of Paradise City (yes Guns and Roses is featured prevalently on the soundtrack). The player is dropped into the sizable town and given the entire city limits to explore, including an urban downtown, rural mountain roads, and a complete highway system. Each intersection has a different mission that the player can accept or ignore. The mission types are fairly few (standard race, stunt challenge, and demolition to name most of them), but they don’t limit the player to a predetermined course. Some routes may be faster or better than others, but as long as you get there first or with the highest score you win.

As you explore the town you can acquire many new cars to play with by finding your competition and forcing them into a wall at high speed. Speaking of high speed, it’s what this game does best. The developers really succeeded at creating a feeling of intense speed and danger. Most players will find themselves exhaling as they cross the finish line after avoiding countless near collisions on their way to victory. For the times that those “near misses” aren’t actually misses the game actually rewards you be showing you slow motion footage of the accident. The player ultimately wins either way.

Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box delivers its B-Grade soundtrack to the player via Burnout Crash Radio, an in game “broadcast” complete with a DJ that comments on current happenings in the town and provides hints on possible faster routes for those players who pay attention. The songs play like the sampler CDs music stores in malls pass out for free, but for the most part they all fit the mood of the game. In fact the only real draw back BP: UB demonstrated was the menu system which obviously got very little attention during the port of the game to PC. After a few hours of playing the game (and one trip to Google) you should figure out to use the F1 and F2 keys to navigate, but a little more intuitive system would have been better.

A lot of DLC is offered for this game, but only the most hardcore fans will find any of it worth the money. Online multiplayer adds extra life to this title which is otherwise good for a solid twenty hours of play time. True racing fans might want to look elsewhere. Burnout Paradise is not so much about finding the right line as it is staying in control while running your competition off the road. However casual race fans and players just looking for something different will find a game that brings a big smile to your face, and is always fun to come back to.

Burnout Paradise has its share of flaws, but it's also incredibly fun. The change to an open world brought its share of issues, like having to use the map as a crutch to get around for a while, but it also allows for freedom unseen in any recent racing game. Most importantly though, Criterion has once again delivered a racing experience that can best be described as controlled chaos, one where even crashing is immensely rewarding. If you're even a remote fan of racing games, be sure to check this out.
