They learned a lot from the first Forza and this one seemed light years ahead in terms of graphics and physics. But the biggest update was the online lobbies and the fact that Xbox LIVE had blown into the stratosphere since the first Forza. They did a lot with the new console and the ease of online integration that Xbox LIVE brought with the 360. Another classic from Turn 10 that really cemented the online community for Forza. This and Forza 3 will forever stand out as some of the best games of ALL TIME to me and many other people I know. Thanks Turn 10.

This game started strong as a racing sim. The solid visuals (for the time) and fun racing really pull you in. It has great controls and lots of customization options. But there towards the end, it gets really repetitive and it's a little too lengthy. You also end up hitting the max level long before you complete all the races and that makes the last stretch of the game feel especially boring.

I was so excited to play this again for the first time in years, but...despite the Career mode being way better than any other Forza after 4, including all the Horizons, the AI is truly repugnant. You'll be taken out like crazy, so do yourself a favor and turn all damage off immediately. I didn't, and it was painful. The track list isn't awful, but in practice, it is so repetitive that you'll be bored less than halfway through. I think I was pretty much checked out around 40%, which is honestly similar to Forza 6 and 2023. It's kinda just how Forza is. That lack of variety, awful AI, and a difficulty level that's all over the place really ruin an otherwise fun classic career mode. Seriously, why is the Nurburgring the easiest track in the game? The AI absolutely sucks there! Not on Mugello or Sebring, the two most difficult tracks in the game. They're perfect there, and even Suzuka is like home turf for them. Maple Valley, Sunset Peninsula, and Tsukuba, however, are all pretty easy.

If I had stopped before getting to R4 and up, this game would likely be an 85, but I didn't. The AI becomes insane at that level, and in order to find which R4/3/2/1 car is the best for the track, you'll have to start the race and basically see which AI is pulling away. Once you know, back out and buy that car, and then you'll have a fighting chance. I refuse to believe these cars are this unbalanced in every other game they're in, and it's just not fun. Their stats all seem similar, yet until you drive them, you won't know if they're any good.

Anyway, the driving is fun, the career makes you actually earn your money and your cars, and there are some intense moments to be had in the endurance races and other fun events. It's too bad the AI is the worst I've experienced so far, and the difficulty is all over the place. I enjoyed the racing the most when I was in first the whole time, and that's not racing—that's just a Max Verstappen simulator. This is a good game, but it should have been a great one.

So Forza 2 has brilliant physics, great customization options, and solid online play. So why isn't it earning greater esteem from IGN? As I said early on, a racing game is about more than just the cars. Much like its predecessor, Forza 2 lacks soul. The only personality you'll find in Forza 2 are the custom skins created by fans. While it's certainly an enjoyable and well-made game, it just doesn't have the spark of energy and excitement found in almost every other racer.

Cars are supposed to be sexy, but they aren't sexy in Forza 2. Sure, they are accurately recreated and have spot-on physics, but Forza 2 is the Ed Asner of racers. It's talented, but you wouldn't want to take it to bed.
