I'll be upfront about never having followed the Kirby franchise. I want to say it was never a conscious decision, but I assume child-me thought it looked like a game for little kids, and I was certainly no little kid. It was decades later when I grew tired of disappointing AAA titles that I started diving back into older games that I first got a taste for Kirby, and it wasn't the original Game Boy game that piqued my interest. Let me explain why.I was a bit surprised to find out the entire franchise began on the Game Boy. Not saying the Game Boy is a bad console, it's actually one of my favorites (though that's mostly down to nostalgia, I guess), but it certainly had its limitations. As I played through the game, I soon realized that it's actually a pretty appropriate console for this game. You have a relatively small screen, but the fairly simple design of both levels and characters makes it very easy to distinguish between the different characters, especially Kirby, who's really just a puffball with feet and nubby little arms. When I re-read that I realize it sounds like a negative, but the charmingly simple art style is one of the staples of the franchise, and I doubt it would be as succesful if this was not the case.
If you play this game today, assuming you have at least some background knowledge of the Kirby games, you might be surprised to find out that Kirby can't absorb powers in this original game. I certainly was, at least. While there are certain powerups you can pick up throughout the game, you're mostly expected to make it through the game just using Kirby's breath attack. Now, gamers at the time wouldn't know what Kirby would come to be known for, of course, so you can hardly take away from the game for missing a feature that would be added to later games.
Now, I've played a lot of Game Boy games, and I can safely say that there are not a whole lot of games with soundtracks as enjoyable as Kirby's Dream Land. While it is fairly simple, it's catchy and suits the gamestyle perfectly, and it's oh so memorable. I'm sure there's plenty of people who would recognize the music without even being familiar with the franchise. I wouldn't rank it above classics like Zelda or Super Mario Land, or even lesser known games like Trip World or The Smurfs (don't @ me, that game has an incredible soundtrack), but it still ranks high on my toplist.
All right, that's a lot of positives, so what brings the score down to a 7? Not to parrot literally everyone else, but the game is painfully short. Having never played it before and taking my sweet time through it, I spent 30 minutes beating the entire game. At the end I sat around expecting there to be some sort of second half, like this was just the first fight with Dedede or something, but no. The game ends. If I were to replay it, I don't expect I'd spend any more than fifteen minutes on it. It's also far too easy, though I suppose that comes down to the demographic the game was initially intended for, which was literally anyone of any ages. Low difficulty being a drawback for me might very well have been a positive for others. Something more specific is how simple the levels are. There were plenty of fantastic platformers released not just on the Game Boy, but in this entire era of games, and Kirby's Dream Land's simple level design isn't really up to snuff.
What it all boils down to is that, while it's not a fantastic game in its own right, the shortness of it alone makes it almost mandatory for anyone with an interest in retro games or the history of video games to give it a playthrough.

In my last couple reviews of Kirby games from the NES and SNES era I've been very critical of them for how much they diverged from a lot of modern Kirby games, specifically the difficulty being way above what a Kirby game should be and the insane amount of respawning enemies. However, I didn't know on Kirby's first try at Stardom he managed to make a pretty decent game altogether that set a lot of the foundations of what a Kirby game should be. It's not a terribly hard game but the boss gauntlet should give you a fair fight and in general, even though it's short the game provides a lot of charm for a first entry of the series. It's quite impressive to think that even though Kirby is not a fully developed character yet with his usual set of moves and copy abilities, he still manages to feel good to control without feeling cumbersome. I will say for a Game Boy title the graphics are a tad bit lacking compared to other games I've looked at on the system and the Super Star SNES game is much better designed even though that's a 16 Bit Game, but in that game they managed to improve the smoothness and design of Kirby and the enemies.I was worried considering I played Spring Breeze on Super Star this was just going to be a level for level copy of that. And thankfully it wasn't because the levels certainly differentiate from the Super Star version enough to be acceptable as it's own title. The game will probably take you about a half hour to complete, but even though there's no copy abilities it still makes it interesting enough by having Kirby needing to swallow enemies in order to do attacks which I found to make the game better in the long run. The music is obviously better in Super Star, but it's totally not bad here since the classic themes are already in place. Some of the enemies and bosses have already been introduced here which is good since they would become iconic staples of the Kirby Franchise. There's not much else to say other than this is a pretty good first game for Kirby. I don't get what happened with Kirby's Adventure, Dream Land 3 and to some extent Super Star. Those feel like entirely different (and dare I say worse) games in general compared to this Game Boy title.
If you have Nintendo Switch Online, this is something you should give a go. It's not cumbersome to control and it's not extremely difficult so if you're curious how Kirby started and why so many Kirby games are based around this design, well, then I think you're going to enjoy this.

I didn't grow up playing Kirby games on my Game Boy Color like I did with my Super Mario Bros. Deluxe or Pokémon Blue Version, so everything that I know about him is informed mostly through Super Smash Bros. and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. And it's due to these releases much later in the franchise's lifetime that I realize I expect decades worth of features to be present in Kirby's first appearance. Kirby doesn't absorb powers from the enemies he swallows yet, and has near-endless flight at this point. While this game is a short, easygoing experience, the surprising amount of mechanics and lack of tutorials more or less requires that. I didn't realize until the gauntlet of bosses before King Dedede that Kirby could still jump while holding an enemy, and how/where he'll move isn't always clear in tight spaces. However, the game is forgiving enough to let you get by without it.But my minor qualms and biases aside, the sprites of the Game Boy Color era that we see here and in other games like Wario Land 3 is how much personality each character has. Kirby and his many enemies are easy to read, understand, and avoid, making playing this game such a smooth experience. The color palette, character/world designs, and music all have such a whimsical attitude that it makes me wonder why he's never outsold Mario. Kirby's Dream Land is such a treat to play with its simple yet fun treatment of the platforming genre.

Not much good or bad to say about this. Kirby's Dream Land has both the unique charm of a Gameboy game, and the annoying physics and controls of one. It's similar to Super Mario Land because it's just really short, it's just a cute little game. It wasn't any longer than it needed to be, and it was just a fun quick experience, so it's not too bad.Updated 5.5 Months Ago

The very first Kirby game is for sure one of the cutest games of all times, but it's also one of the easiest. Even as a kid, I could beat it in less than an hour. Don't get me wrong, I think it was cool at the time to have this kind of games every child could really playthrough. But nowadays, there are other games for that (even sometimes other Kirby games). I might be wrong but I'm not sure any kid will have fun playing something so limitated now, and I don't see any adult really loving this out of nostalgia.Updated 8 Months Ago

Cute game. Main stand-out is the music. Probably the shortest game I have ever played tho, only 4 levels. It feels like a demo for Kirby's Adventure on the nes. could be a nice into for non-gamers back when it came out but it isn't a stand-out game. Other Kirby games are better. 6/10 (Also I played it emulated on my DS)Updated 8.5 Months Ago

Surprisingly very short but still had a good time with it. As first impressions go I think I'm having more of an interest with Kirby games than Mario but I'll see how the later games fare compared to each other. One thing I like for instance is within platforming areas, it does have some hidden areas for you to explore, like destroying crates that lead you inside a place, where you can find health pickups which feel uncommon to find. The platforming is fine but some of the ones with jumping feel pointless as you can just fly across some obstacles. Though, even with some areas that have you flowing, there are some enemy placements that have you navigating carefully through them. Some you can pass through, and some that may have you shooting a puff of air and regaining your air control back.
There's something so satisfying about sucking up enemies and spitting them at others, so the combat isn't much but it's entertaining for me to experience. I did like some of the boss variety here and the different attack patterns they have. Jumping King Dedede hammer attack as you wait for the star to pop up and suck in, using Kracko's enemies against him, and fighting Kaboola in the air as you dodge his cannons (though I find this boss troublesome for how slow Kirby moves and how fast the cannon balls move). It feels rewarding timing your jump, sucking in a projectile and launching at the right time.
Overall, as my first Kirby game, it was a fun experience and I'm looking forward to trying more. I enjoyed some of the cute adorable world design and music to it. I did run into some serious lag slowdown issues which soured the experience but was manageable in the end.

I replayed this first entry in the Kirby series again on Nintendo Switch Online. A short, somewhat sweet classic that was interesting to play to see what started it all.The gameplay is simple with movement and attacks. There is a simple, yet appreciated variety of enemies and the bosses felt unique to play against. Whilst not overtly difficult, it is a game where you want to learn the attack patterns instead of just rushing through like a tank. That being said, there isn't too much of interest with Kirby's attacks or what one can do in the game. It is simply finishing levels each with their own boss. Whatever secrets there are to find, though cool to find, aren't particularly special.
As an early game on the Gameboy, the visuals aren't striking but are charming in their own right. Each level is themed and the game does modestly well in creating different environments. The intro sequences, dancing, etc. were fun to watch and probably my favorite parts of the game.
The audio was cool to listen to and some tracks are very good. There isn't too much in terms of sound, but I do appreciate some noise when bumping into walls for instance.
There is a story to the game that's simple but charming to experience through the game and cutscenes.
While most characters don't have too much to them, enemies do have some sort of personality (in their designs, attacks, and movement) and the fairly colorful personalities of Kirby and King Dedede are especially seen through cutscenes and non-playable moments.
While there aren't really any bugs, at least on the Switch there are some moments of lag.
Overall, Kirby's Dream Land is a game to play if one is interested in seeing the beginnings of the Kirby series. Whilst an older game and more barebones compared to future entries, it does have its charm and is worth a playthrough.
Would I replay: Probably not

+ Controls that work surprisingly well+ A unique mechanic in swallowing
+ A TON of fun (and marketable) characters/bosses
+ Iconic music
- Short, around an hour at most.
- Screen crunch due to limitations of the console
This game holds up surprisingly well. The controls are floaty and a bit slow, but the game works, and when you compare it to the start of other franchises around this time (Metroid, Mega Man, Pokemon), you start to realize that this game, while dated, is a great start for a franchise still around today. If you are interested in retro games and have an hour of free time, give this one a try.
