A fun little trip down memory lane, but if it released today I don't know that I would feel the same fondness for it. Was a 10/10 back in the mid-aughts. The Remaster was sharp and looked great but... I mean it's a 20 year old game that already looked fine.Updated 1 Week Ago

What a game. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a marvelous experience from start to finish. Phenomenal writing with endearing characters and a wonderfully wholesome adventure plot; beautiful graphics mixed with an excellent soundtrack (both remastered perfectly for Switch); and gameplay that manages to be simple enough to be accessible while deep enough to encourage mastery of its mechanics. I don't think I have a bad thing to say at the moment. If you have not played this game, I implore you to do so. It is one of the premiere RPGs on the Switch and a truly special experience. So, when will Nintendo make a proper sequel? I cannot wait.Updated 1 Month Ago

Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door is an amazing game filled with very well written characters that will make you both laugh and cry. The characters and wacky situations are the bread and butter of this game. You get attached to every single one of them and it makes you genuinely want to save the world for them. My only issue with the game is it was way too easy for 95% of the game. I felt like I breezed through everything up until the final boss. Overall great experience and would recommend it.Updated 1 Month Ago

Pros:+ The visual upgrades are PERFECT. It really makes this game even more timeless.
+ Combat started out slow & tedious to me, but picks up close to the midway point & becomes euphoric all the way until the end. ITS SO GOOD
+ The writing is just peak. Consistently funny after all these years.
+ The story & its pacing are immaculate. I still prefer Super Paper Mario’s story to TTYD tho (fingers crossed for a remake of that next!)
+ The characters are all super memorable!
+ Surprisingly fair difficulty curve! I remember this game beating my ass when I was a kid so I was anxious about returning to it but I never got a game over this time. With my badge setup I melted the majority of the game (not using any of the broken setups online, just made one up for myself & had a blast
+ Trans Vivian is finally canon LFG
Cons:
- The platforming sections are surprisingly bad for a Mario game. They aren’t common but the chapter 6 ones can go straight to hell
- The backtracking was fixed in most places but is still an annoyance for sure.
- Text speed is WAY too slow for a 2024 game. Patch it now.
- Inventory space is pitifully small
- Locking the framerate to 30fps (not even a stable 30 during enough parts of the game for me to mention it here) when the original was 60fps is such a disappointment. I really love the new visuals but re-adjusting my action command timing to 30fps vs knowing the 60fps original for most of my life was such a hassle for a lot of the game. This game could’ve benefitted from a Performance vs lower Quality mode, or be put on a console that isn’t begging to be taken outside & mercy killed. The Switch needs to GET LOST already like damn.. I’m so sick of this glorified tablet messing with great games & their performance!
- Hot take but the original soundtrack is vastly superior in a majority of the tracks. The new OST isn’t bad at all, I actually think it gets SO much better as you get further into the game (literally the entire final dungeon is an eargasm start to finish). I do like some of the new renditions, but I will still listen to the originals over them. I think some of the new tracks are actively worse (for ex. I was so disappointed in Rawk Hawk’s new theme that I had to tweet about it. It’s a good song on its own, but compared to the original it’s like fast food vs fine dining. I wanted to give the entire new OST a chance but thank god for the GameCube badge if I do a replay.
• Not a con towards this game but PLEASE don’t go back to the Sticker Star & the others’ formula after this remake. My aging heart can’t handle another Sticker Star, I’d rather deep fry & eat my own legs. Fans haven’t shut up over TTYD for 20+ years for a reason! Give us a new game in the vein of the first 3 Paper games & forget that stupid Sticker Star phase ever happened! I can beg if you want..

I had this on the GameCube but never quite finished it, came back to it on the Switch and finished it all the way through this time. I still find this to be a bit of a mixed bag. The story, the graphics, and the overall presentation are totally charming, and I was surprised to find myself really wanting to come back just to see how all the plotlines resolved. But I find the battle system a bit repetitive, and even with the Switch upgrades (which I can't imagine playing without), there's still too much backtracking for my taste. I'm glad I finally got back to this, but still not one of my favorites.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

I'd like to preface by saying that I never played the original game back in the day. In fact, I've played a single Paper Mario game of any kind before this one. I decided to give it a go since I've always heard about it from people who played the original, and all reviews are always universally praising it. And after playing through the entire game, my experience was just.... fine. There were parts that I liked. The final dungeon was fun, incorporating all the different abilities gained throughout the campaign. The final boss was a decent challenge finally (which brings me into something I'll mention later). The different characters were fun with lots of characters, but still pretty one dimensional. And there were just some general times as I was going through that I would like, "yes, this is fun, I can see why people enjoy this." Those feelings were consistent, however, and basically sums up most of my positives.
My main complaints revolve around different reasons why I just didn't have a super great time overall, besides those mentioned above. The combat was so easy - other than a few select fights, it felt like they all just played themselves. And I realize that easy isn't necessarily a bad thing, combat doesn't have to be hard for it to be fun, so maybe a better word is simplistic. I've played many a turn based RPG in my life, and this one was just so simple that it was hard for it to be engaging and fun. I generally avoided all possible overworld encounters, and didn't feel like I would start being under leveled because of it since it was so simple anyway.
My biggest complaint, however, is about all of the unnecessary backtracking. This is the one area where I notice even the biggest fans of this game admit that it's a problem. And boy let me tell you, it really is so bad. So much back and forth, and back and forth, over and over and over again. In one level, you go to one end of the map, where you learn you need something from the beginning. So you go all the way back to get it, and that guy with it tells you that he needs to trade you for it with an item that over on the other side. So you go all the way back for it, and then bring to him, and then finally have to go all the way to the other again once again in order to use it. Or in another level you have to backtrack to every single level to try and track down a guy, only to finally find him where you had started. I don't always hate backtracking, in games like Metroid it works great, but all of the backtracking in this game seemed like nothing more to me than pure padding the gameplay time, and served no purpose beyond that. They could have taken it all out and lost nothing; in fact, taking it all out would have actually gained more enjoyment!
In all, it's not a bad game. It has a lot of charm, heart, and enjoyment. But those feelings are frequently overshadowed by less enjoyable aspects. But again, almost all reviews continue to be glowing, and it's still widely regarded as one of the GOATS, so maybe I'm the problem and I just didn't get it. But that's what I think.

This is the remake on switch. I’m also one of those insane people who played Bug Fables first. Paper Mario TTYD has made a world that’s bursting with life, action, and beauty thanks to a superb soundtrack and some fantastic visuals.
The action turn based gameplay is great due to all the moving pieces. You’ll be on the edge of your seat when you block an attack that would’ve otherwise killed you or when you just perfectly execute an attack for some much needed bonus damage. It’s engaging, but not overly cumbersome.
The plot is fine. It works. It’s effectively the same plot for every Zelda game you’ve ever played except replace all the characters with Mario characters. Find the macguffins, fight some evil lord, meet some colorful characters along the way. It’s all played straight, but it’s done well enough. Additionally, while the character’s motivations, personalities, and dialogue are written well, they’re too simple and shallow for my taste. I didn’t feel super invested in any of the partner’s stories.
The main draw of the game however is the humor. The visuals, music, art design, gameplay, and plot are all a foundation for some incredibly charming and constantly subversive humor. For example, in the very beginning of the game Mario goes to a port town and while he’s talking to a tutorial/exposition npc there’s a mafia guy in the background comically beating up another character. The entire game is full of this stuff. Almost every other line caught me off guard and had me laughing. They never let up. Even nearing the end there’re some fantastic comedy bits.
Now for the paper pop up elephant in the room. This game is padded. Really REALLY padded. For every gameplay moment that’s engaging, there’s another that is just downright wasting your time. I guarantee this game could’ve been 8 hours shorter and lost nothing. There’s one mission, that most people know, where you have to return to every single area of the game looking for a character, and the whole game is full of these types of moments. This one just happens to be the most egregious. It’s mind numbing.
It’s a great game, I just wish it was more streamlined.

Good- stylish points add extra challenge to the inputs. Super guard is a great addition, it rewards godlike timing.
- the chapters felt extremely diverse. The missions in each one and the story, the dialogue, the scenario was very very well crafted. It kept me intrigued. Like in Glitzville, I really wanted to know who was behind all the missing fighters.
- the chapter with the train was an interesting change of flow. Being on a train was cool, and taking the gameplay into the station was nice surprise too.
- The partner powers and mario powers in the overworld were very cool. Good use of the moves to solve puzzles. Although some were too ambiguous
- The story behind the partners were interesting. They did make me care about them.
- The dialogue is of course superb. Incredibly charming, and funny.
- I liked how they tied in Bowser despite him not being the main antagonist.
- The TEC side story with Peach was also very sweet. A little sad, but it was a welcome change from the main story.
Bad
- the game won't let me turn around hammer quickly. Which makes it hard to counter attack with hammer if the enemy is approaching me from behind.
- some puzzles are really stupid, like what the heck is a water hole, how am I supposed to know I can blow these boxes because their paper in the storage room in glitzville
- it's stupid how items and coins after a battle can drop into the water. There was a fire enemy that it was fighting very close to the water and after I beat him, all the goodies dropped straight into the water after.
- the depth perception in some parts of the game looks really off, making me fall into a water or off a cliff by accident because it was hard to gauge Mario's distance.
- some of the story progression events are really ambiguous to figure out period because sometimes you need to talk to an NPC with a certain partner with you, which isn't always obvious.
- tracking general white to literally every single world just to talk to an NPC then moving on to the next world was pointless, mundane and not fun.
- I don't understand why there are so many sprites in the game, when you max out your partner upgrades super early in the game.
- I found much of the offensive and debuff items pretty useless because I could dispatch pretty much all the enemies with regular FP attacks.
- there are too many sections of the game where Mario just walks around looking for something or looking for someone. Like in chapter 6 in the train. I'm just constantly running back and forth between passengers. And chapter 7 in the moon fortress. And here I'm just taking elevators and just walking from room to room.

Now i understand why Paper Mario fans praise this game so much, it really is a masterpiece! The characters are all so fun and creative, the game's humor is really spot on! You really do create a genuine connection between your partners which makes the whole journey worth it.The gameplay is what you'd expect from an RPG. Turn-based battles with different attacks that spend your flower points, items that can be used, and special moves that can be used when you gather enough enthusiasm from the audience in your battle. Outside battle, you solve a variety of puzzles with the moves Mario has with his jumps and hammer attacks, plus the ones that his partners can do. In the game, you explore around 7 different places in order to collect Crystal Stars, all of which with different NPCs, bosses, enemies, puzzles, and many more.
Overall, the game is a "must play" for any Mario fan out there, and it's good to see it being accessible (officially) again with the Nintendo Switch remake, which refurbishes a lot of the original contents of the game with new and improved looks.

It was a great to to revisit this game 20 years later. I will say, this game was not as amazing as I remember it being as a kid, but that's because this game was really novel to me at the time. I've played so many RPGs since then that this game does not stand out as much. It is a very good and endearing game, however, and I really enjoyed it. It just isn't a top tier RPG, but it is a good and comfy one. The characters and writing are charming and they all made me smile the whole playthrough. There are some arcs that drag a bit though, but it is fun that each chapter had a different setting and conflict.
The level design is a bit basic, I think Super Mario RPG is much better in that regard.
Combat is also good, but almost a bit too simplistic in its systems to the point that certain helpful stats are just hidden for no reason. The badge system is great though and the action commands are fun.
The graphics and art are gorgeous too. Beaitful looking game.
Now having played both TTYD and SMRPG in pretty close succession, I'd say they are fairly equal. They have pros and cons in different areas. I like that SMRPG didn't over stay its welcome, but I do appreciate that TTYD brought in so many characters and locales to experience. I'd say TTYD is a bit better overall, but I'm going to give TTYD the same score as I did for SMRPG: 8/10.

After finally being able to play the beloved Paper Mario classic, I can confidently say that Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door earns its cult classic status. There is so much creativity and originality on display compared to some of the newer Paper Mario titles, which is a nice change to see. The different areas were all unique and had awesome characters and designs. The music was overall pretty good, with the remastered soundtrack really elevating the different areas and parts of the world. Despite having praise for TTYD, I personally felt like the game was too overhyped in my opinion. It is a really good game, but I wouldn't say that it is like insanely amazing or anything. When I played through TTYD, I felt that it wasn't living up to the expectations that I had built in my mind. The plot was very predictable and I wasn't really that attached to the partners. Also, the remake definitely streamlined the process of backtracking through the room with the pipes and the partner ring, but still it didn't feel good to go back and keep going back and forth to find or get things. Some of the side quests were still extremely boring and pointless and the game wasn't able to fully escape the tedium in my opinion. I did find all of the star pieces and shine sprites, I did the majority of the side quests, collecting badges and recipes, and pursued the Glitz Pit rematch and the optional really hard boss fight in the Glitz Pit. This was enough of the optional content I was willing to pursue, the main one that I ignored being the pit of 100 trials. It wasn't worth my time. This is my 2nd Paper Mario game I have completed, my first being Paper Mario: The Origami King. TTYD is different in a lot of ways compared to Origami King, but they complement each other in weird ways. TTYD has the more traditional battle system of timed attacks compared to Origami King's puzzle ring mechanic, etc. In my eyes, there are strengths of both types of Paper Mario games. While TTYD had a more in depth and nuanced battle system, Origami King excelled in stronger and funnier writing and much better music. I was also more emotionally invested in the plot and characters of TOK. While I can finally understand the excitement and hype of the Paper Mario series potentially going more in the direction of the old titles, I would personally love to see a fusion of the best of the newer titles and the older titles. Overall, I'm glad that TTYD was remade and put on switch, as this definitely is one of Paper Mario's best titles that deserves to be played by any Paper Mario or rpg fan. I may have enjoyed The Origami King more personally as opposed to TTYD, but I can recognize the amazing things it has to offer.Updated 4.5 Months Ago

Honestly, I can see why people loved this game so much. Many things such as the combat, writing and soundtrack are done amazingly well making it a memorable experience. Granted there are issues such as the backtracking (which while neutered due in part of the pipe room), does make doing the side quests a tad bit long, but other than that this is a phenomenal game. The Nintendo Switch remake is an amazing remake, loyal to the original Gamecube version of this game, the touchups are done in the vision of the original directors and some additional ease of access and quality of life updates make the experience much less frustrating in places that need not be while not reducing the experience in other areas. There is new post-game content, a partner wheel to quickly switch between partners, and some features added to reduce the amount of backtracking through dungeons, which has been known to be frustrating. The gameplay is amazing as it was before, players can juggle between choosing new capacity for badges that allow for active and passive skills to choose from, more hp or more fp (mp of this game) per level. The availability of the superguard option over guard also tempts players to take the more skilled option of superguarding within a few frames of an enemy action to take no damage at all rather than the easier alternative of taking partial damage.Paper mario as always, introduces a lot of creative freedom thematically, to its games unlike other mario games. It pokes fun at many concepts regarding the mario franchise and the same creativity is involved in puzzles that require you to think outside the box to progress the story, and especially in finding hidden easter eggs or items such as start shards or badges. For example, wearing the wario badge and the luigi glamour badge simultaneously will have you wearing waluigi colours. The overall story and atmosphere is heartwarming and unique, making it something different from all the other games that are regularly churned out today.
Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door, is an expectional RPG that breaks through all genre expectation, shining through the mountain of repetitive storytelling and forms of presentation that the genre is burdened with.

I miss these kinds of games! So much personality. Badges add so much uniqueness to each playthrough. I love a game where you have complete control over the difficulty not by a normal difficulty slider, but by adjusting your own build. Since they went through the basic Mario areas in 64, they were forced to get creative with the locations in TTYD and it really pays off. The hub town is awesome with great Metroidvania vibes. The remake adds some nice quality of life updates, though could have went a little harder, and some things are watered down for no reason, such as audience screams and the end of chapter note sequence. Despite these small bothers, this remains one of my favorite games.Updated 4.5 Months Ago

Let me preface this review by saying this: Colour Splash is my favourite entry in the Paper Mario series. Now, the only games from the series I've played (prior to TTYD) were the original, Colour Splash and The Origami King, so I have been exposed to a great variety of gameplay styles present in the series. Upon the announcement of TTYD's remake on Nintendo Switch, I finished the original on Nintendo 64 for the first time, knowing that it is structurally similar to its sequel on the GameCube. As much as I enjoyed the classical RPG-style gameplay of the original, I walked away from the game with an opinion that the newer Paper Mario games were still my favourite. Therefore, I was a bit nervous going into TTYD, despite the praise it receives from fans of the series. However, after completing the game in just under 28 hours, I can confidently say this: the game deserves its overwhelmingly positive reception.I'll start by listing my favourite features of the game. For all games in the Paper Mario series (from what I have played), one aspect I really appreciate is the how the story is told through diverse characters and environments. TTYD does this best. It's no secret that modern Mario has struggled with introducing unique character designs, but most NPC's in TTYD the player interacts with either have unique visual features that differentiate themselves from ordinary Mario characters, or have diverse personalities which make you feel attached to them. As mentioned before, game environments are also important in creating a memorable Paper Mario experience for me. Again, TTYD fails to disappoint here. Petalburg, Keelhaul Key and Poshly Heights are some of my favourite locations in the Mario franchise, period. The story itself is quite engaging too, although it may be a little too simple for some.
In regard to the gameplay, TTYD follows the footsteps of its predecessor on Nintendo 64. As such, players execute interactive commands to fight enemies in turn-based battles, which they are rewarded experience points for completing. I have no major issue with this battle system, although I have found it to become quite repetitive after several hours. It's definitely fun to switch between partners and play with their different gameplay styles, but it does get a bit old towards the end. It doesn't help that the final chapter/dungeon is quite long too. Thankfully, I found the ending to be very heartwarming and sweet, which helped wash away the sour taste the last few hours of the game left in my mouth. Nonetheless, TTYD's battle system isn't my preferred way to play Paper Mario, but it works. Better than the original game's, I think.
Overall, I loved Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. The story and its characters really brought up the experience for me, and the remake on Switch definitely does a good job easing new players into the old battle system, although I still wish new elements were continuously introduced to keep it feeling fresh. I wouldn't complain one bit if the next Paper Mario follows the same structure as the first two games in the series.
