First time played the SNES version in 2024, no nostalgia goggles here, not a FF fan, only played FF 1-5 before (NES/SNES).At start, the only thing which is engaging is the story, because until you get the Espers, you wonder why this game is so weak gameplay wise compared to FFV, you gain almost nothing from leveling. After getting the Espers the leveling feels much better. Plot and characters are much better than any of the previous games, but as in the previous games dialogs are also somewhat overextended and whiny. It is becoming a theme in FF, hope it will be better in FFVII.
The biggest gameplay problem is that you have too many characters and if you want to level all of them then it is tedious since you can have only 4 characters in a group, sometimes it feels like you spend too much time in menus.
For example, different Espers have different bonuses on level up, but at the same time you need them equipped to learn their magic abilities, let's say you want "Magic +2 on level up" Esper equipped when one of your mages raises a level. But that Esper is currently equipped on another character which learns Esper's magic, so you want this "Magic +2" bonus on your mage, you need to monitor the remaining XP and switch the Espers just before the mage levels up, then switch back again for the other character to keep learning magic. Now think that you need to manage 4 active characters, 10+ characters overall, and 20+ Espers. Maybe you don't really have to do it to win the game, but I like to level efficiently if I see the way, and this system got me tired. As a comparison in FFV you had only 4 characters to manage so it wasn't that bad.
The second half of the game is a bit too long for my liking, also a bit too open, so you might need the help of a guide for some things.
The advantages of the game were written a thousand times, overall the game is good and worth playing, and on the moment of it's release, the only better JRPG were Dragon Quest IV, V, and Phantasy Star IV (I'm playing the games in their release order with no nostalgia for any of them)

One of the BEST JRPGs of all time. This was the first Final Fantasy game I played way back on the GBA when I was young. I remember thinking it was super fun and it had a great story but little did I know of how impactful this game was to JRPGs and the gaming industry as a whole. It set a VERY high bar for me when it came to JRPGs and it helped shape how I viewed video games today. It even helped me in learning how to read! Revisiting this game as an adult now gives me feelings of nostalgia but more than that, appreciation for video games as a whole. Like I said, I played this a long time ago on the GBA but never actually finished it. Now that I'm an adult and it released on the Switch via the Pixel Remaster, I had to pick it up once again and finally conquer it. After 25 hours and countless battles, tons of deaths, failing the lines during the opera scene, spamming Phantom Rush, and finally smacking Kefka, I finished FF6 for the first time.
As I was playing, I tried to picture myself in 1994 when this game released on the Super Nintendo. I tried to picture all the surprises that happened throughout the story and tried to put myself in the shoes of someone experiencing the game for the first time. I experienced most of the game as a kid so I knew everything of what was going to happen and I wish I could go back to when I didn't. I can't imagine those that were playing for the first time and getting through the floating continent and then seeing the aftermath of that. Starting off with only one character and having to go around the now decimated world to regroup the entire party. Seeing where each character was and how the events that passed changed them or for some of them, didn't change them but had to re-contextualize their life and what they were fighting for.
I don't want this review to go on forever but I have to say that there's a reason FF6 is on my list and many others' list of the best games of all time. This level of storytelling in a video game was uncommon when it first released and it's not hard to see how this game influenced and inspired so many games that we have today.

Updated 2 Weeks Ago

One of the best old school FF games, my only complaint is that the coliseum mini-game felt like a missed opportunity by making your character be AI controlled... Can't tell you how many times the character tries using useless options like 'Arise' in a 1 v 1 fight. Great story/characters.Updated 2.5 Weeks Ago

Final Fantasy VI is widely considered to be one of the best Final Fantasy games and one of the greatest RPGs ever made, and that's why I had to play it someday.Playing Final Fantasy VI around 30 years after it's initial release for the first time makes up for an absolutely fascinating experience.
First of all, I found Final Fantasy VI's story to be surprisingly simple at first, but it's accompanied by some of the best characters in the series; they're very likeable and engaging characters who enrich the narrative significantly. Also, the plot twist halfway through the story is simply mind-blowing and it makes the whole story so much better than it already is.
As for the gameplay, it's actually good, it aged very well, and its character customization and RPG elements are really good too.
The graphics still look very nice as well and the music is incredible even to this day.
As for the flaws... honestly, I don't really have anything negative to say about this game; it's pretty much a perfect Final Fantasy experience all the way through in my opinion.
Pros:
+ Rich narrative
+ Compelling characters
+ Enjoyable gameplay
+ Interesting RPG mechanics
+ Amazing music and visuals
Cons:
- None
Final Rating: 10/10
- Masterpiece -
Simply put, Final Fantasy VI is arguably the best Final Fantasy game ever, and it's also one of the best RPGs of all time, even to this day.
Do I recommend it?:
Must-play for Final Fantasy fans or RPG fans in general, period.
Highly recommended for newcomers as well, but keep in mind that Final Fantasy VI is an old game with pixelated graphics and basic turn based combat system.

Final Fantasy VI is an important game in console gaming history, not just within in one of the longest running, and most popular, RPG series but as a game that pushed the boundaries and capabilities of storytelling, characterization, world building, and crafting cinematic set pieces. Previous games in the series did one or two things really well, but it was the case that the complete package wasn't fully there to create a "GOAT". VI in my opinion was the complete package, doing everything well without making sacrifices. The game starts off with this sombre opening credits of three mech walking across a snowy field, utilizing mode7 graphics to great effect. From the onset it's apparent that the tone and setting are completely different from previous games: steampunk, instead of medieval fantasy; dark, cold tones instead of warm colors. It quickly establishes some of the backstory of one of the characters AND the main villain, Kefka.
This game doesn't have ten different villains, surprise 'real' bad guys, or evil characters whose motivations were just misunderstood all along. Kefka isn't so well regarded because he's the best of the final fantasy saturday morning cartoon villain stand-ins, but because how effectively he represents the most vile and contemptible aspects of humanity. During that first initial flashback he gloats to Terra how he has made her his complete slave, then forces her to burn anything and everything that resists the Empire. Shortly afterwards, we see his whiny and petulant side by attempting to reduce Figaro to ash for the sole reason that he felt insulted by the king (and playable character) Edgar. Later, Kefka shows how little he regards anyone and everything, besides to curry favor and power with the emperor Gestalh by employing machiavellian tactics to remove General Leo and then casually poison all residents of Doma. He displays cowardice by running away, instead of fighting Cyan, the sole survivor of Doma. Kefka drains Espers, the source of all magic, then discards them in the trash like a used handkerchief. He (at least temporarily) gets exactly what he wants: to create a ruined and broken world to lord over, not because he wishes to rule and for others to obey but for the simple fact that he views all other creation as a mote of dust to be casually flicked off one's shoulder.
Great RPGs should have great antagonists that instill a driving motivation, and friction, for the character(s). For me it's a show, don't tell kind of thing. I want my antagonists to be around, do terrible things, and make me hate him. Kefka is the best final fantasy villain because he does all of that, gets pretty much what he wants and embodies the opposite of the protagonists. Of course, those protagonists also need to be well developed and FFVI doesn't disappoint.
The cast of playable characters is expansive, but a lot of care went into making them feel unique and fleshed out. Most of the characters overcome personal struggles and grief, and that's accomplished through both narrative and gameplay (side quests and such). One of the defining themes of FFVI is that individually characters show their weakness and failures, but grow together and display strength through unity. Terra, a person who has only known life as a slave, learns to trust through the actions of others. Celes, with her guilt for her role in the actions of the Empire. Cyan, overcoming his grief and the blame he puts on himself for the deaths of his family and Kingdom at the hands of Kefka. Each character has their own story to experience.
One other thing I love about the characters is how their identity is tied to the Final Fantasy class archetypes. Locke, the thief. Shadow, the ninja. Etc. Etc. Even though it's not my favorite system, Espers and magicite (how characters learn magic) ties directly into the universe lore and story for how magic is supposed to work. Having context and backstory makes the world more believable.
Speaking of the world, the game does a phenomenal job of introducing areas then revisiting them again and again but in unique ways, while also providing each town and locale a unique itentity. For example, you travel through South Figaro once on the way to recruiting Sabin and meeting with the Returners, then later go through it again effectively in reverse but playing only as Locke under occupation from the Empire. Many of the towns and areas are like this.
The soundtrack remains the best complete work of Uematsu and the PR version arrangements are incredible. The graphics back in 1994 were some of the best and richly detailed ever and hold up incredibly well and the cinematic nature of the game, through the opera scene, was ground breaking. The sprite work is fantastic. The game has some issues with pacing in the second half, and gameplay isn't as deep as V, but altogether it remains perhaps my favorite in the series. Even though it was the least needed, the pixel remaster did this fantasy game justice.

Completing the evolution in storytelling that began in their own right with FFIV (and continued outside FF with Dragon Quest V and Phantasy Star IV), Final Fantasy VI managed to outdo the previous effort in terms of emotional firepower, thanks to a grand, extensive concentrate of tragic tales revolving around death and loss. It's basically a tale of two games, two sides of the same coin - the playful first half and the mournful second half. The former indulging in wacky, aimless minigames, and the superior latter comprised of emergent, lengthy scenes telling equally brutal backstories as the player tries to navigate and reclaim the wasteland before them. One half greatly benefits the other in their peculiar contrast. In a way, this split functions as a metaphor for the destruction of old JRPG values and their subsequent replacement; out with the grandiose exuberance, in with the somber, contemplative mood. Gau and Celes are perhaps the cast's biggest 'victims' subplot-wise, but the rest potentially set new standards in poignancy.Echoing all those ambitions is the versatile combat system. Often dismissed as imbalanced or broken, it actually led to some of the most liberating battles yet, carrying busted but entertaining synergies and combinations that only add to its fun factor. In addition, character-specific skill progression grants extra gameplay identity to its large roster beyond moveset or stats, while the Esper system - essentially a rework of FFV's job class mastery, can at least impact character stat growth, thereby opening up even more build opportunities.
A turning point for JRPGs, Final Fantasy VI was the dividing line between the old grindy era and the party/character focus that defined its future.

This is my favorite game, for some nostalgic purposes, but mostly because I truly feel this game is a total gem among the JRPG category. The characters are enjoyable, the art is great, and the game keeps you on your toes learning numerous different mechanics. I personally am a bigger fan of Final Fantasy games without the "blank slate" characters, and this game is a primary reason why. It provides so much more depth to the cast and lets them fulfill believable roles in their world. Terra, Celes, Locke, Cyan, are all examples of solid characters. Some of the characters are less fleshed-out or are too one-dimensional (Gau) but even then, the storyline for Gau was captivating, and his backstory is refreshingly not spelled out for the player in a way many modern games would do. Kefka is perhaps the best character in the game, as he is truly the essence of pure evil. His actions are at many points shocking and is uniquely cruel. He could have easily been boiled down to a generic villain, but truly stands out on numerous fronts. Each character having their own ability is a unique concept, and I enjoy the wide variety of abilities with the characters. It makes for a number of combinations of different characters, and the mulitple-party dungeons take advantage of this beautifully. The main issue I have with character diversity is that eventually, the game boils down to spamming Ultima, and there's no need for any abilities to be used in the first place. This issue is completely avoidable, but definitely obvious to the player upon discovery. However, the game maintains a fair but challenging difficulty curve, which is ever present within the end game dungeons and post game content. The final post game boss took me several tries, and was immensely satisfying once beaten.
The art of this game shines, and has aged like fine wine. I still find the tiny 2D characters to be oddly expressive, and the art impressive. The game clearly has a great deal of care put into the finer details. I always love finding small interactable secrets, or the various unique items Locke can steal off bosses. The primary drawback of much of this is that many areas cannot be freely explored without random encounters. Random encounters, while not an issue for many, certainly ages the game. Progressing due to random encounters can be more and more tedious as the game goes on, especially as this is a longer game for this genre. In addition, while it seems cool in the moment, having shadow survive almost entirely as an easter egg is quite frankly a very anti-player decision
TLDR:
Pros:
-Art style aged excellently despite being a 1997 title
-Extensive cast of characters
-Great storytelling and dialogue, especially for a JRPG
-Tons of possible customization
-Hidden easter eggs and small game elements which make replayability more enjoyable
-Extensive and challenging postgame
-Loads of completionist content for those that desire it, but not necessary for those that do not care about it
Cons:
-Random encounters can be incredibly tedious
-While there is lots of customization, build diversity is few and far between
-Occasional misogyny and otherwise uncomfortable dialogue from a couple characters
-Spells are not balanced very well

Giving this an 8 for story and presentation. For an old game it doesn't suffer too badly from quality of life issues and has a ton of charm. FFVI just has a very specific vibe (somber but also really funny at times) to me and it is well executed. Music is timeless as well. Another great thing is that this game doesn't overstay it's welcome (aside from grinding) - It's just the right length in my opinion. I don't have a lot of patience for grinding as I am a busy person, but I hope I have the time to play this again someday. A remake of this one would be crazy.Updated 6.5 Months Ago

FF6 is an amazing game, especially for its time.A great story that focuses more on the individual characters' lives in the world of FF6. Kefka is easily the most interesting villain so far. Very interesting character development that happens throughout the game. Focuses more on the interrelationships between the characters.
Great gameplay that borrows some mechanics from FF5, but removes the grindy part of farming the mastering of jobs. Has a good summoning system atop of the relic system that is an interesting way to learn magic. Incredible music.

Wow, I really loved Final Fantasy 6. Fantastic game. The characterization of FF6 is top-notch, and manages to make the party very likable. FF6's world stands out from many others in the series due to how absent magic is. I do think some characterization is a little undercooked, however, even if I like many of the characters, but I'll cut some slack for the time. My main critique is the Esper system, which is cool on paper, but making it so your stats are gimped if you level too much without them really sucks. Once I was able to grind, I freely did so, but that was extremely late in the game. Espers are probably my least favorite system in the series, and I kinda prefer having characters be more specialized or playing to their niche. But regardless, Final Fantasy VI is legendary, and is iconic for good reasons, and it makes that clear even with how old it is. I'd recommend the Pixel Remaster though, since it adds QoL features (such as turning off XP so you don't overlevel) that'll make the game more tolerable in the modern age.

The game’s pacing is kinda slow, the encounter rate is really high, and it can drag out some dungeons and even when exploring the world map. The best part of the game is it’s characters, but there are a lot of party members and not all of them are given the same amount of love, my favorite character is Terra. I gave this game a 6 mostly because of the encounter rate slowing down and dragging out some segments of the game, if it was reduced by half or even a quarter I would probably give this game a more closer to a 8.Updated 7 Months Ago

The game is always a joy to play. I played it for the first time on the Gameboy Advance way back in middle school. The music of this game is phenomenal and the art style slaps. Most of the characters are fun to get to know, minus a couple like the Yeti(I forgot his name) and could have used a bit more development. Kefka is just pure chaos incarnate and was a fun jrpg villain. I gave the game 8/10 because the end portion can get a little hectic with the amount of optional things to do and the lack of information in-game to accomplish them. Overall, FFVI is a positive experience and I would play it again in the future. The opera scene is the best!Updated 7.5 Months Ago

Let's make it short : Final Fantasy VI is the deepest JRPG I've ever played. Of course, there's a wonderful story, a totally open-world second part, etc. But there's a also, in the background, incredible mechanics that make the game an absolute must-play for anyone into RPG. Trust me, it's not legendary by mistake.Updated 8 Months Ago

*Pixel Remaster* Great as the first time I played it (GBA), the new arrangement OST was on point and achievement hunting was fun. VI is still probably the best out of the pixel era when it comes to overall package, but the devs get better naturally. Not much to say but VI with quality of life is great, and everything else content/design wise is still a hit classic.Updated 9.5 Months Ago

This game is fantastic. It's not too hard. It has an insanely good story that gives you characters with substance. It feels full of life and like the devs put a ton of love into this. Couple of aggravating things but it doesn't take away from this game being a complete work of art. Like trying to learn all the abilities for Gao on the Veldt is tedious and dependent on RNG, but then that story kicks back in and the music takes you away and makes you forget everything that aggravated you before. I'll definitely return to this title.Updated 10.5 Months Ago

I can see why people would say this game is one of the best Final Fantasy games, if not one of the best games in general, ever made. I went in without too big of expectations, but I was blown away by the end. The story and characters of this one are fantastic, and there were parts of this game that made me tear up, which doesn't happen often for me. Extremely good and I'm happy I played it finally.Updated 1 Year Ago

Updated 1 Year Ago

Not my favorite in the series, but I can see why many people like it. Many memorable moments and Kefka is probably the first interesting JRPG villain. Deserves a remake to flesh out the characters. Loved Terra, Celes, Sabin and Edgar. Shadow is a sneaky one too. Locke has his moments. Cyan deserves more. I wish the others could also receive more fleshing out because I was interested in all of them. Mog making moogles a mainstay in the series is why I appreciate this game too.The story, starting out like a linear JRPG one then going and doing completely different for the second half by giving the player the freedom to do whatever they want, was well executed. Especially for its time.
Dancing mad is hands down a masterpiece of a battle theme. Actually, the whole OST is just amazing.
My only complaints are really related to this game's age. It deserves to be much more than any of the pixel remaster or GBA/ Mobile ports have provided. Maybe, hopefully one day if SE realize the potential in this game again.

I think this is the best FF, and it's not close. The plot of the game is legendary. How many games can say that the main villain actually accomplished their goal? And the entire second half of the game is non-linear, you could just pull up to the Tower basically whenever you wanted - re-recruiting everyone is completely optional.
What's interesting about this game is that there is no main protagonist. The closest you'll get is either Terra or Celes, and both are fantastic characters - two of the best Square has ever put out. Terra as she starts as someone who wants to learn what love is, to getting teased with many romantic relationships, to finding love by adopting the orphans in Mobliz. And Celes, as she goes from someone with such a low sense of self-worth that she tried suicide shortly after Kefka ruined the world and finds a reason to live again after seeing Locke's bandana on the seagull as she eventually reunites the party to take down Kefka.
And that's not all. Locke's own story of his own trauma from losing loved ones and learning to forgive himself with his story coming full circle with Celes in the ending, Edgar's sacrifice to Sabin with the double headed coin, Relm and Shadow's own history as father and daughter, Setzer and finding a passion in life again, the cast of this game was absolutely stacked.
Kefka is one of the most iconic villains in gaming, honestly. He's quite literally the Japanese Joker, this guy is fucking unhinged. A clown with a nihilistic god complex, he actually succeeds in making the world a hellhole that he rules over.
Gameplay wasn't anything unique or special, it was just classic FF through and through. This game didn't innovate much, but it did tell one of the best stories ever from a JRPG.

8.5/10The narrative and characters, including side characters and villains, are easily the best part about the game. The themes are well thought out and are explored excellently through each cast member. The interactions with each other and the backstory behind them is engaging and well written. Though like most games with a large cast, there are characters who just don't get enough screen time. The combat is serviceable. I admit that I'm not too crazy for turned based combat but this one had enough to play around with and experiment on. Unique abilities and espers were a fun dynamic and having everyone be a magic user was cool but did homogenize a lot of the combat.
(The rest is unimportant, it's just side thoughts I want to document for myself)
Having never played any of the series until 2023, I feel like my experience is kind of unique where I have no nostalgia bias towards the series. While I did play the pixel remaster version and it's unfair to compare, I feel as though this game has aged very well compared to 7, 8 and 9. Those games were very early iterations of 3d graphics while 6 of course uses 16 bit pixel art. I can't really appreciate the innovation those games were pushing because I grew up on 3d graphics that were already way ahead by the time I started playing games. I can't seem to appreciate much of the series as much as I feel like I should.
