This is the last day of the month and it's time for our little monthly journal update! I've had a lot of completions this month. I don't think I've ever had this many. But five of these games are one-hour games though......

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
Rabbids Coding
Jill of the Jungle
Jill of the Jungle: Jill Goes Underground
Jill of the Jungle: Jill Saves the Prince
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt
Princess Remedy in a Heap of Trouble

The highlight ot my month is definitely Uncharted 2. What a great game. I couldn't put the gamepad down. I went throught that game very quickly. Also, both Princess Remedy games were surprisingly fun and entertaining. Overall it was a great month in gaming for me.

As usual I'm surprised by how many completions I have this month. This year has been extremely productive... or unproductive depending on how you look at it.

Batman Telltale Series - One of my favorite telltale games. Really well written, and the story was interesting. Batman is the most interesting superhero universe IMO.

Batman The Enemy Within Telltale Series - Even better than the first. Loved the characters in this one, even though the story was a little odd at points. I loved this playthrough.

Call of Duty 3 - Probably the most unpolished game in the series, though it was developed in 6 months. Not very fun.

Call of Duty Black Ops 3 - The last Call of Duty campaign I had never played. Something about the gameplay isn't very fun in this one. Probably my least favorite CoD campaign.

Far Cry - Oh boy is this game bad. I had no idea it was a sci-fi shooter either. Many game mechanics feel extremely unpolished, and the overall experience was mostly frustrating.

Final Fantasy XV - Good game, but doesn't feel much like FF for me. The game starts out on a boring note, but keeps getting better and better until the fantastic final chapters.
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Gladiolus
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto
Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis - Pretty good DLC. Short, but to the point. Ignis' was probably my favorite.

Life Is Strange - A fantastic story from beginning to end. Some slower moments in between, but overall one of the best "interactive story" type games.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps - I'm usually not into 2D platformers, but this is a must-play. Fantastic level design, visuals, and music. The boss sequences are astounding.

Resident Evil 6 - Don't hate me, but this is my favorite RE game so far. Leon's campaign was better than the rest, but I actually liked what the game had to offer in all the campaigns. Despite it not really being horror, there was fantastic enemy variety, the writing was RE4-type cringy, and the gameplay was solid. Most levels were unique, and it was an overall fun experience. I get why people hate this game, but I can't say those reasons made it a bad experience for me.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 - (the original) This game holds up very well. The classes weren't very balanced, but the gameplay is addictingly fun. I wish they could remaster the original games and give them online features.

Favorite --> Batman The Enemy Within Telltale Series
Least Favorite --> Far Cry

July 03 - D'LIRIUM - PC
July 04 - Purrfect Apawcalypse: Patches' Inferno - PC
July 06 - Red Dead Redemption 2 - Xbox One
July 08 - The Forest - PC
July 09 - Dungeons & Lesbians - PC
July 10 - Conan Exiles - PC
July 12 - Dominique Pamplemousse in "It's All Over Once The Fat Lady Sings!" - PC

July 15 - West of Loathing - PC
July 15 - Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story - PC
July 16 - West of Loathing: Reckonin' at Gun Manor - PC
July 17 - First Job - Android
July 23 - Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - PC
July 26 - 12 Labours of Hercules IV: Mother Nature - PC

HIGH: Surprisingly enough Red Dead Redemption 2. There's tons of things I absolutely hate about it, but if you ignore all of the pointless busy work and extra layers to the simplest of actions added for the sake of "realism" and just play it for the story then it's actually really quite good. I still prefer the first one though.

LOW: Not really a low, but a game I have very mixed feelings about Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. It's really good and absolutely terrible at the same time, and a game I won't ever even try on anything above easy mode, started the game on normal turned it down to easy pretty early on, the higher difficulty just makes all the things I hate about it just that much more obvious.

One completion made by me this month.

7/27 - The Last of Us: Part II (PS4) - 37h 47m

I thought it was a great game, although it definitely depressed me a bit. I'm thinking of maybe going and getting the platinum trophy for it at some point, but I definitely need a break from the game for some time.

007: Quantum of Solace - 3h20m - REPLAY
Kane & Lynch: Dead Men - 3h40m - REPLAY
Outlast - 11h15m / 100% (3 playthroughs) - REPLAY
Outlast: Whistleblower - 4h30m / 100% (3 playthroughs) - BEST
The Getaway - 9h35m / 100% - REPLAY

Sadly not a very productive month, more of a little replay marathon really, Outlast: Whistleblower being the only new completion makes it the best by default. Out of all 4 replayed titles, 007: Quantum of Solace, aka Call of Duty with a James Bond paintjob, was the most entertaining, it's got the perfect length to be beaten in one sitting, this time I played it with the unlocked framerate and altered FOV, which makes it a lot more enjoyable. Kane & Lynch: Dead Men turned out worse, a strange phenomenon where you know the game is below average but you somehow come back to it for a quick replay: inaccurate guns, a crappy auto-cover mechanic, the last third in Havanna and an AI that surpasses itself in stupidity. Also, this is the first time I noticed most of the gun sounds having been reused in the sequel, I know Dog Days is lazy effort by definition, but it too magically draws me back every now and then. I can't explain it, but I guess both Dead Men and Dog Days are terrible and fun simultaneously.

Solid selection this month. Best game hands down was Ocarina of Time, it was my first playthrough and it was amazing. I dunno how much the 3DS version differs from the original though, so my 10 is specifically for the 3DS version. There isn't a particular game that I could call the worst though. Maybe Saints Row 2 if I had to pick.

3 - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (NDS) - 8/10
5 - Pyre (PC) - 8/10
8 - Resident Evil HD (PS4) - 8/10
9 - DUSK (PC) - 9/10
10 - VVVVVV (3DS) - 7/10
14 - Saints Row 2 (360) - 7/10
18 - Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1) - 7/10
21 - Grim Dawn (PC) - 8/10
22 - Perfect Dark (360) - 8/10
23 - Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - 8/10
27 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS) - 10/10
29 - Halo 3: ODST (360) - 7/10
30 - Carrion (XB1) - 7/10
31 - Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (XB1) - 8/10

I had also got about 4 hours into Killer7 (PC) before I had to give up on it out of frustration. It's rare for me to completely abandon a game and I'm annoyed that it came to that, as I was enjoying the story and style of the game. I also started Hellblade earlier today but I doubt I'll finish that tonight.
*EDIT* lol finished Hellblade

It was a better month than normal for me! Not really sure why particularly, as this month there were more things happening and my free time should have been less....But I guess I traded some of my "watch random stuff" free time to "play some backlogged games" free time. Which is not a bad thing.

Mega Man X5 - July 5th (7/10)
Pyre - July 12th (9/10)
A Short Hike - July 15th (8/10)
Donkey Kong Country (Co-op replay) - July 18th (8/10)
Astral Chain - July 20th (8/10)
Mega Man X6 - July 23rd (5/10)
Metal Slug X (Co-op replay) - July 25th (Normally 8/10, on Swith 7/10 for performance issues)
Touhou Luna Nights - July 26th - (9/10)
Mini Metro - July 27th (7/10)

Astral Chain was started months ago and just wanted to finish it. Game of the month goes to Luna Nights probably. Love metroidvanias and the time mechanics in this one made it really interesting for me. And it's short and sweet, so it doesn't overstay it's welcome at all.
And please, unless you are playing through the whole series like I'm trying to do, don't play Mega Man X6 :D There are so many better Mega Man games...This one really has nothing special going for it...

I've watched a no damage MMX6 playthrough on YouTube... I wonder if it's TAS or if it's legit. The game looks incredibly hard... even for someone like me who is usually at ease with this type of game.

7/5 - Sly 2: Band of Thieves - 9/10
7/9 - Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves - 8/10
7/22 - Pyre - 9/10

I finished Sly 2 after 16 years and it felt great. Well paced, interesting concepts, and coherent heists. It drags a little towards the end, but that final level makes up for it.

Sly 3 was good, but a noticeable notch below Sly 2. I still enjoyed this, but the variety of gameplay segments gave me whiplash. Where Sly 2 is primarily stealth platforming, Sly 3 is a hodgepodge of ideas that feel too disjointed.

Pyre was a great game that I probably wouldn't have played if not for the Game of the Month club. I recommend it to anyone that wants a polished experiment in storytelling.

Currently playing Ghost of Tsushima, so I might complete that in August.

The highs

Bioshock infinite was a great game, I beat the entire game in one day and it was amazing.

Chicken shoot is the first shovelware title I've beaten, so I gave it a 10/10 because you shoot chickens, and it's fun. This is a role model for all shovelware.

Fire Emblem Three Houses was an amazing, three day experience.

Shovel knight: Shovel of Hope is a great time.

The Lows (In order of least sh*t to most sh*t)

Minecraft Story Mode is not written well and I never cared about any of the characters. It's basically your basic telltale game but with Minecraft elements.

Chibi-Robo Zip Lash is one of the worst games I have ever had the displeasure of playing. It is too long, the controls are terrible, the level design makes no sense in terms of the world and the fact that Chibi-Robo is 2cm tall, and worst of all, It killed Chibi-Robo.

Red Steel hurt me physically with it's sh*t motion controls. They attached almost all the controls to shaking the nunchuck when they don't use most buttons on the Wii remote, the voice acting and gameplay are abysmal, and you die insanely quickly, having to restart from the checkpoints that are placed in the most inconvenient of places(before an unskippable cutscene, right in the middle of enemy fire, several rooms before a boss). This is the worst game I have ever played.

I managed 4 games this month as well: two micros, one small and a medium.

06-July-2020 - Submerged (PC) - 03H1M – 100% Achievements - 05H41M
11-July-2020 - The Mirror Lied (PC) – 35M
13-July-2020 - The Secret of Tremendous Corporation (PC) - 48M
27-July-2020 – BioShock 2 (PC) - 15H1M

"Submerged" was okay. Casual and not very challenging, but I don’t often go to 100% achievement and it was enjoyable enough to go for it here. Of the two micros, "The secret of Tremendous Corporation" was definitely the more fun. "The Mirror Lied" was not good. Some people like it and I’m really not sure why. The larger effort this month was "BioShock 2" which was excellent. I liked the first one more, but this was still a very solid FPS even after all those years.

Next month I’m gunning for 10 games. Lots of micro and small ones, but I plan a couple of Medium/Large in the mix as well.

My Game Completion Size Guide:
Micro (0-2 hours), Small (2-10 hours), Medium (10-25 hours), Large (25-45 hours), Epic (45+)

I was kind of pathetic this month...

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Beyond: Two Souls
Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2+

My third-worst month this year, better only than Jan and May. Beyond: Two Souls was great, as I've said before. Wind Waker was also pretty good. I recommend both games. Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2 is only really worthwhile if you want to play Civ on a Vita. Mobile phones and both last and current gen consoles have better Civ games than this. Not a bad game, just so little content I'm not sure I'd actually replay it, which is a shame because I like replaying Civ. But I have the first CivRev, Civ5 and Civ6 (which I haven't played yet), so it's just not worthwhile to replay. Still, as my first Vita completion, I guess it's not bad?

Next month, I'm going to start by aiming for Skyrim VR. I might have use for a smaller game, but I'm also considering starting on the Vader comics or Lost Stars manga to fill my morning hours when I have time to relax, but not enough for VR. But also I feel like I've put gaming off for too long.

Been a while since I've been able to sit down and finish some games.

07/04-Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8/10)
07/10-Yooka-Laylee (6/10)
07/19-Onimusha: Warlords (7/10)
07/20-Tecmo Bowl (7/10)
07/20-Super Soccer (6/10)
07/20-Volleyball (NES) (5/10)
07/23-Spec Ops: The Line (8/10)
07/24-Sonic CD (6/10)
07/26-Guacamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition (8/10)
07/26-Streets of Rage (7/10)
07/28-The Banner Saga (7/10)
07/28-Natsume Championship Wrestling (6/10)
07/31-Tomb Raider (2013) (7/10)

Best: Guacamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition was a blast to play, being paced so incredibly fast and never outstaying its welcome.

Worst: It'd be easy to put most of the sports games that I played this month here, however Yooka-Laylee ended being my least favorite game that I played this month. After giving it a second chance, I struggle to call it a bad game but there's enough missteps and broken elements that blemish this game enough to be heavily unenjoyable in certain sections.

Personal Recommendation: Tecmo Bowl surprised me in how well it controlled and played for an NES football game. I found myself coming back to this one multiple times.

Crash Team Racing (PlayStation) - July 04, 2020 - Adventure Mode. Played as Crash. 101% Completed, including the 100% ending. 16/16 Trophies. 4/4 Keys. 18/18 Relics, 17 of them Gold and 1 of them Platinum.
Doom (2016) (PlayStation 4) - July 17, 2020 - Nightmare difficulty. Collected, found, upgraded and did everything except all Weapon Masteries. Last few things done via Mission Select. - REPLAY

Really great games this month, one of which is a replay of Doom (2016) on the Nightmare difficulty, since I did Doom Eternal on it, I figured why not go back and do it in this one, since I haven't done it yet. It was pretty challenging, but it got significantly easier, the closer I got to the end, because of all the upgrades and such you get during the game.
Crash Team Racing was so much fun to play and I can't wait to do another playthrough with Coco instead of Crash.
I would have been happy to have more completions this month than I had, so hopefully that will be the case for next month.
Happy gaming for August!

I knew I played a bunch of short indie games this in July but I'm still surprised to see how many games I technically finished.

20th - SOMA - Blog Entry
20th - The First Tree - Blog Entry
23rd - LOVE - Blog Entry
23rd - Who Wants To Strip This Babe? Hentai Streamer Girl - Blog Entry
24th - Crazy Frog Arcade Racer aka Crazy Frog Racer 2 - Blog Entry
25th - red
26th - Devolverland Expo
28th - Flower - Blog Entry
29th - down.
29th - ring ring - Blog Entry
31st - Depression The Game - Blog Entry

The highlight of the month was SOMA which probably became one of my favorite story-driven games. It's been a long time since I was so invested in a game's plot and the entire deep sea horror exploration gameplay is something I always wanted but never actually thought would get.

The worst of them was easily Crazy Frog Arcade Racer which started as a jokey little glimpse into a morbid curiosity first but then I felt compelled to beat it and it became one of the most painful, miserable experiences. It plays so badly and the final track made me lose my mind. I spent way too much time with this game than I ever had planned to and I feel like it destroyed my soul.

This is my worst month for completions this year tied with January. But the thing about January was that I played EDF 5 which took at least 17 hours and that was continuing progress from December of last year. The main reason was because I had major video game burnout and played nothing but Left 4 Dead 2 this month basically but I did manage to get in two games:

Shock Troopers: 07/07, 100%
LEGO: Legends of Chima: Laval's Journey: 07/25, 90%

I also 'Beat' The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx, but that's more of an Ebook than a game although it did have interactive mini games built into it. Shock Troopers is the best Arcade Game I have ever played hands down. Everyone should play it. Avoid the god awful sequel though. Laval's Journey was a hilarious, tightly written and involving LEGO Game that is the best I played in the LEGO Series. Although the ending leaves a bunch of stuff unresolved that leaves you wondering if they were planning a sequel that we never got since the Chima LEGO Sets got canned a year after the game released basically. Maybe the TV Show has a better ending. I don't know. But who knows.

Anyways, I'm hoping to play more games next month and I'm finally going to get to play Serious Sam 4 next month which has left me in anticipation like no other game has.

Hey everyone,

I've beaten one game in July:
2020-07-17 - Frostpunk - 7h40m - 2/5

I really didn't enjoy my time with the game. As I've written before, every few months I get into the mood to play a strategy/base building game. Eventually I go out to buy one, play it for a few hours, barely enjoy it and never touch it again. Fast forward a few months and then the same thing repeats.

I don't blame it on Frostpunk which is obviously very well done and probably a great game for people who actually enjoy the genre. That's why I didn't rate the game when I recorded my time on HLTB.

Happy gaming in August to everyone!

An unusually high number of completions for me in July... of course... that comes with a bit of an asterisk. 😂

07/15 Trials of Mana (PS4) • 28:11:45
07/20 Trials of Mana (PS4) • 07:56:16
07/24 Trials of Mana (PS4) • 05:54:44
07/28 Mega Man X6 (NS) • 07:07:19

Trials of Mana was easily the best game that I played in July, given the fact Mega Man X6 is a smoldering pile of dung and one of the worst games that I have ever played.

Only played 2 games this month, both really long.

27th - Factorio - PC - 74h 10m - 80/100

I tried so hard to finish Final Fantasy VII too yesterday but Sephiroth is a bitch

Obviously gonna have to put Factorio as both my best and worst game this month. I do recommend it if you just want a more casual game that requires some thought. Plenty to do in the game as well, could surely last someone hundreds of hours. Didn't get a chance to try multiplayer, but I'm sure that would be fun too. I hate those biters so much though.
