When I started, I noticed that Underworld is much more refined than Tomb Raider Legend, the graphics look really nice, the platforming quality and controls when they work feel much improved. There is also really nice controller support in this game, something that TR: Legend lacked, I typically like to use keyboard and mouse but I think Tomb Raider games are a little nicer with controller, so I'm happy to see some good support for it. The game also doesn't play like an action movie like Legend does which is a solid improvement. So other than the brief compatibility issues, my initial impressions of the game were really good, it was looking like it'd be a really great experience. And that impression lasted through much of the first level as well.

The first level of the game surprised me as it's underwater at least for the start of it, but the water controls are pretty good. I did get stuck on the very first puzzle as I didn't realize one of the pieces needed would be hidden so far from the puzzle itself, but that was fine. The big octopus dude is kind of cool, but this puzzle is where I got my first taste of some of the problems with the game. The platforming is mostly the same as Legend's with just a few additions like grappling and wall jumping. So the platforming in Underworld is good, when it works, which it often doesn't. The platforming is just really buggy and inconsistent, sometimes Lara just won't grab a ledge for some reason, sometimes she jumps in completely the wrong direction, and whenever she needs to jump backward off a wall, the camera just doesn't turn that direction so it's a leap of faith. The Thailand level was overall pretty average, it's nothing special, but the same platforming problems are of course still present. I also had some pretty horrible frame rate drops early on, but they weren't a problem after the first 2 levels so it was fine overall. The platforming problems are made even worse in the Mayan ruins level, the platforming design is just terrible in that level, and that same terrible quality is still present in Jan Mayen.

One other major aspect of Underworld is the puzzles, which similar to all the previous Tomb Raider games are very hit or miss. Some of the puzzles are kind of cool and fun, but a lot of them are just boring or annoying, the overall puzzles quality is really nothing to write home about. The block puzzles have a major issue though. On modern hardware running at a high refresh rate, the block physics make the block puzzles almost undo-able, attempting to move any block at all made them fly across the entire room. But I was able to fix it and get it working.

The combat like many other things is similar to Legend's which I actually enjoyed, but the difference is that enemies are way too tanky, and enemy spawns are just spammed at way too many points in the game. And add on top of those combat issues the fact that the camera has a massive stroke in many of the combat encounters making the game nearly unviewable during them. I thought Crystal Dynamics had the combat figured out with Legend, but that sadly isn't the case with this entry. I'd like to note that while I do have a lot of bad things to say about the game, when the puzzles were good and the platforming worked well, the game is really fun and I got a good amount of enjoyment out of it, these are the issues that just drag down that experience. It just seems like the majority of deaths that I had were really cheap, probably a good 90% of them were due to unintuitive or inconsistent controls, annoying combat, terrible camera angles, and Lara's random incapability to grab ledges.

The combat in the end game was much more bearable, and actually pretty fun with Mjolnir, so it isn't completely bad. I also found it pretty goofy how the wetsuit is a clothing option for the final level, I guess Lara is just built different and can't be frozen to death. But the platforming is at its absolute worst in the final platforming sequence, first of all it's a really annoying puzzle to solve, and Lara would just randomly teleport 3 feet away during some of the intense platforming sections. I died at least 3 times to Lara being randomly teleported off of the rotating platforms, the final sequence is absolutely horrible, there's not even a cool bossfight with Lara wielding Mjolnir either. So overall the best way I can describe Tomb Raider: Underworld is that it has really good presentation, there was a ton of effort into making the game seem like a great AAA experience, but there wasn't enough effort put into the actual gameplay for it to feel anything like that. Every aspect of the actual gameplay is a step down from Tomb Raider Legend. When the platforming worked, it was a fantastic experience, but there are only a few sections in the game where the platforming actually does feel like that and isn't bugging out.

Underworld is definitely the best part of the trilogy, gathering the best of the previous installments, it is the ultimate “Tomb Raider experience”. Pretty good graphics and story, cool platforming and combat, well, and, of course, the atmosphere of exploration. But it's not without its flaws, Underworld has a completely absurd number of minor control flaws - Lara doesn't jump, she doesn't walk, the camera flies into the wall, or something else. All this crookedness contrasts very strongly with the overall quality of the game, leaving a bad aftertaste

The jump from legends to underworld feels like it should be the same jump as Uncharted 1 to 2. With much larger levels and puzzles, and a more complex and cinematic story, this should be a slam dunk similar to uncharted 2, however underworld lacks the polish and charm of that game. While the game is a lot prettier and more modern than legend, its definitely not a better game.

One of my biggest critiques of anniversary was how the game didn't really relate to the story of legend at all, despite me thinking it would do so. Now I see why people say that game is a part of this trilogy, because this is the game to actually go ahead and make those connections. This game just shoehorns in many characters and ideas from anniversary, without regard to how they impact the plot of the original game. For example, natla just randomly shows up, somehow captured by Amanda. I do think its cool that they are bringing back a villain from the first entry of the trilogy into the last, but the problem was that anniversary was really just a modern remake of the original game, lacking all of the character of the other 2 legend games. What is continued on from legend isn't very good either, as really everything kinda just takes a backseat to natla and norse mythology and stuff. I do think that the story does end on a good note, however I don't think its worth playing this game to see its conclusion.

The biggest problem with this game however is the gameplay. While I love uncharted 2, it definitely does have its problems in the parkour department, where sometimes you will accidentally jump somewhere unintended and die. I empathise with games from this era and having clunky climbing, however this game just takes the problems of the era and multiplies it by 100. The climbing in this game feels worse and even more buggy than it did in anniversary, and of course is not even comparable to how it is in legend. I died many times per level to the climbing just misinterpreting my inputs or because lara would jump somewhere I didn't want her to. Your jumps in this game can feel really sticky at points, making you kinda grab onto things you don't intend, however sometimes this just turns off for some reason leading to more needless deaths. A new feature in this game is wall jumps, which is cool in its own right, but can lead to even more annoying deaths when lara decides to wall jump instead of grabbing a ledge inches above her face. All of the climbing moves feel clunkier honestly, even the grapple which worked fairly well in the last 2 games. The controls and camera are also butchered in this game, and honestly id argue that this game has easily the worst camera in the series, again leading to many stupid deaths.

The combat in this game is also much worse than it was in legend and honestly even in anniversary. For some reason the ability to pick up weapons and ammo was removed, meaning you can now choose a gun at the start of a level, use it until you run out of ammo, then just rely on your pistols for the rest of the time. A lot of the enemies in this game can be annoying, due to the same problem I found in anniversary where there was more animals rather than human enemies, however I don't think this was as big of a problem as it was in that game. Honestly, this game doesn't really get too combat heavy until the last level, so most of the game is really just dealing with the shitty climbing and solving stupid puzzles.

The pacing in this game is probably one of its weaker elements, where some levels can last like 20 minutes where others can last up to 2 hours. The quick pacing of legends is gone and replaced with more slow puzzle driven gameplay similar to anniversary. They even removed the in game conversations which really helped move the story along as well as keep the player entertained. Its weird that they decided to slow the pacing down so drastically because really this is the least "tomb raider" feeling TR game so far, besides the survivor trilogy of course.

Overall I don't think this is the worst in the series, but of the ones I've played it definitely is in the bottom tier. This game really does feel like uncharted 2 before uncharted 2, and I feel like if this game had some more time to be as polished as that game, then underworld would be remembered a lot more by people. This game definitely does have some good, especially in the 2nd half of the game where everything starts to pick up, but I just cannot recommend people sit thru the first half of the game to play the slightly better but still not great 2nd half. I do see why some people may like this game, because if you can get used to its flaws than there may be something cool here, but it is just definitely not for me.

Apart from the story (barely), the NDS port of Underworld has absolutely nothing in common with the original game and probably should have its own HLTB page, if it wasn't for this obvious fact that no one will ever play this pathetic action side-scroller except by accident. Lucky me, I did. It was indeed an accident : I literally found this game on the floor at a music festival. I thought someone lost it, but after playing it I knew this was some desperate attempt to forget about it.

such a mess!

RO:

This game was a geniune mess, I played Legend years ago and I beat Anniversary recently and I always heard this game in this version of the TR timeline was the worst of the bunch and yeah it lives up to its reputation as being just that. I was always hesistant on even playing this game at all, I wanted a PS3 game to beat and I bought the "LAU" collection a couple of years ago, and this was just lying around for so long. There were many times I wanted to drop the game and move on to something else but due to reasons I will state later, I held on, and preservered and got to the end.

Anyways introductions out of the way, what why am I so negative on it? Simpily put, this game is a case study of how automated platforming can go horribly wrong. The first problem and this can apply to Anniversary to varying degrees is that Lara doesn't feel very smooth and precise to control. There are times where Lara jumps and she will either not go the way I want her too, refuse to do the action, or do a completely different move from the one I want her to do.

For example, if I say, have Lara balance on a beam, she will either jump across or do a weird front flip that causes her to miss the ledge and fall to her death.

Speaking of Lara falling to her death, that is something that will be happening a lot while playing TR Underworld. It has unpolish written all over it. Everytime she jumps on to a ledge, clambor on to one or just anything that involves moment to moment climbing, there is always a 50-50 chance of Lara messing up the jump even though I pressed the right inputs and she falls to her death or her doing something I don't want her to do.

To name two examples, when I try to make Lara wall jump, I have to mash x for dear life in order to for Lara to consistently jump from side to side because the timing for it is almost non existent then there is the parts where Lara is on a pole which she will either climb on top of one, shimmy to the side and hopefully she will actually jump to the position you want her to. The movement in general feels very stiled since like mostly anything involving climbing or platforming, there is always a 50-50 chance, the player will succeed or just die and restart.

Then there is the camera, which at it's best, does an okay job at giving you an angle on where to go next but at it's worst it starts spazzing out and it gives the player an awkward angle on where the player can or cannot jump to. Then there is the fact that it can get way too close to Lara while she is climbing and it gives an even worse angle on the action.

This now leads to my next issue, what can Lara can or cannot interact with? I had a hard time what hand holds and ledges Lara can climb or she will ignore, having Lara climb up surfaces that are waist high is a herculan effort considering sometimes she will climb and sometimes she won't. Am I supposed to climb anything colored in white? I think but all of that can start blending in with scenery and as a result, I have no geniune clue which areas Lara is able to interact with.

I looked up a walkthrough for much of the since all of these issues combined made for an extremely cumbersome game to play. This game came out the same year as Prince of Persia 2008 and that game is much more polished and enjoyable to play than TR Underworld is.

Now on to the good, after all that complaining why did I beat the game at all? Simpily put the game checkpoints well and load times after dying is super fast, I wish all games loaded as fast as TR Underworld did. This might be the one of the redeeming parts of the game.

Another good part is that the under water "Helheim" level is damn good. It's an underwater level meaning there is barely any climbing, and as a result, the level design gets to shine and I can tell where I am supposed to go without needing a guide. I can appreciate the exploration and backtracking Indiana Jones style power fantasy of exploring the unknown mythological tombs the game wanted. Knowing what I can and cannot interact with was easier to tell compared to the previous levels since it's just collecting keys and switch pulling, two things in game level design I like.

Combat is okay, I like using Thor's Hammer and it felt better to use here than it did in the Avengers game. I see people complain about it but it's decent, not good but combat was not the sole focus so as far as, combat inbetween climbing and exploration is concerned, it gets the job done. It's not supposed to be combat master class. Shotgun rounds can take out most enemies before getting Thor's Hammer.

Overall, TR Underworld is about as mediocre as mediocre games can get. It clearly needed more polish and more time to cook in oven before releasing. If I didn't own the game for so long and it didn't checkpoint and load as fast it did, I would've dropped and not see it to completion at all. If you want a case study of how to mess up automated platforming in a big budget AAA game, this is it

This is definitely the roughest of Crystal Dynamics' TRAU trilogy. It's very enjoyable at times and the most ambitious of the three, but doesn't fully stick the landing in its jump between console generations.

The platforming is often just as fun as Legend and Anniversary, with some excellent additions like the chimney jump. The game shines when it focuses on moments like these! Unfortunately the game also experiments with some more open-world level designs, but can't seem to fully figure out what to do with them. Previous Tomb Raider games had a handful of secrets per level - usually hidden in well-designed deliberate spots that felt satisfying to discover. Underworld instead pads out its sprawling levels (particularly the underwater ones) with several dozen secrets sprinkled around seemingly at random. I understand they wanted to give the player plenty of stuff to find, but unfortunately it can feel like a tedious exercise in open world bloat. In fairness some levels (especially Thailand and Southern Mexico) are better about this and do have unique well-designed mini-challenges for many secrets - I get a sense that these levels had more dev time and the others may have been rushed.

Another minor gripe about the secrets: for some reason they decided to hide many of them in breakable vases, which results in a very weird gameplay/narrative disconnect where you go around making Lara kick any and all precious ancient ceramics unlucky enough to enter her sights. Lara wouldn't do that, she respects these cultures! It's a small issue, but I found it such a baffling/distracting design choice, especially when it ends up being a significant portion of your gameplay time if you want to find all secrets.

I had some related problems with the storyline. While I enjoyed the surprise returning characters and new villain, the Norse aspect of the plot felt weirdly crowbarred into the storyline established in Legend. It also creates some very uncomfortable implications in how it suggests the mythologies of all the cultures featured in the game are just derivatives literally built atop a Northern European proto-myth. It's kicking cultures in the crockery all over again, but at the narrative level! Also, Lara's search for her mother didn't have a satisfying/meaningful conclusion, in my opinion. I played on PC so I wasn't able to play the Xbox-exclusive DLC - maybe it resolves the trilogy's story in a more complete way?

I feel bad for being so negative about this game when I did enjoy it at times, so let's see... things I liked... the new bike segments are very fun and the controls for them work well! Navigating around tombs on wheels is a silly but enjoyable new idea for the series (previously Lara had the skidoo/jeep etc., but the way the bike is integrated into the tombs' puzzles here feels different). The graphics are gorgeous, especially in the Thailand and Southern Mexico levels. Keeley Hawes is brilliant as Lara and her acting is excellent throughout the game! The cutscene animations are very good, and I love Lara's micro-expressions and subtle brow furrows!

Oh no, I remembered another major negative... the gameplay animations are unfortunately a bit of a mess and a noticeable downgrade from the carefully crafted hand-keyed animations of previous Tomb Raider games. They used motion capture as the basis for Underworld's animations in a commendable attempt at adding more realism/fidelity to Lara's acrobatics, and while the movements themselves are well-performed by the motion capture actors, the implementation is marred by technical issues. Between the glitchy inter-animation blending, awkward dynamic IK leg popping, and unnaturally sped-up movements for certain actions, the end result isn't very cohesive. It even affects gameplay at times, since you can sometimes temporarily get stuck in place when turning around!

They likely would've ironed these issues out if they had been afforded more time, since it seems like the game had a very difficult, time-pressured development cycle. It's surprisingly similar to Angel of Darkness in how next-gen teething difficulties, high-bar ambitions, and impossible time pressures affected its outcome. Underworld couldn't fully escape development Helheim, so it's a game of high-highs and low-lows.

Magnificent set pieces as usual. A little better than Legend. Improved driving, improved combat (but still a little too easy) multiple ways to success in the puzzle platforming and a decent story. Half typical TR nonesense (who builds all these epic world ending tombs and never uses then?) the other half of the story develpos the end of Legend and comes to a nice conclusion.

There are some flaws with jumping - the interface does not adjust quick enough to your choice of direction when making rapid jumps causing you to plummet to your death on numberous occasions. The 3D camera also gets confused in tight spaces or when stood against a wall, forcing blind jumps and a problem with field of view in terms of options and planning. Frotunately the auto-save moments are frequant and sesibly placed, meaning you never have to go back far or repeat lots of tasks just to get another go at that puzzel you haven't figured out.

A solid game with some beautiful graphics, but the screen is staring to burn and curl as the edges of some scenes. I can see why Crystal Dynamics went on to create the reboots.

This was my last game in the Legend Trilogy. I played "Anniversary" last year and "Legend" the year before - and overall, I think this is the best of the three. I was never great at action-adventure platformers and found this to offer a good balance to players like me - challenging at places, but probably the easiest of the three.

Just like other games in the series, the core of the game is its navigational puzzles - you have to figure how to jump, swing, push, pull and balance on ledges to move from one point to another. Time sequences are also here, but unlike "Anniversary" - they are reasonable. Sure, they provide a challenge, but you will make it after a few times. Autosave happens at regular intervals and often. There is also a manual saving, but it's mostly redundant - the autosave seems more than adequate.

The plot picks up after the events of Legend. Lara Croft is searching for Avalon - hoping to find the truth behind her mothers' disappearance. The search starts in the Mediterranean sea - and as the name suggests - "Underworld" takes you to many places under the surface - with lots of underwater locations. Thankfully enough, Lara now has an oxygen mouth-piece, which means no annoying time-sequences before you run out of air like in previous games in the trilogy. In her search, Lara visits the Mediterranean Sea, Coastal Thailand, Southern Mexico, Jan Mayen Island, the Andaman Sea and the Arctic Sea - meeting familiar faces from previous instalments: Amanda, Natla and the doppelganger. She does discover what happened to her mum at the end, at the cost of letting Natla almost destroy the world - but she saves it at the end - as you expect.

The game engine was upgraded for this chapter. It is the same engine used in "Deus Ex: Human Revolution". Graphics are sharper and look more photo like, with nice realism – for example, the water glistening on Lara's skin. Top games today have better graphics, but this still looks quite good.

Puzzles in the game are on par with "Legend", but with much less backtracking which makes them tighter and neat. They are not as large as "Anniversary", which is a bonus in my opinion. Time sequences are there, but most are for reaching bonus treasures and they are rarely required to progress in the game. There are also additional movement and physical manipulation: The grapple and rope can be used to nudge rocks and other moveables, and small sequence of ledges can be used for moving bouldering-like - up, down and across walls and surfaces. The big surprise is that there are no boss fights (it's the only tomb raider game that lacks boss fights). There are big monsters, but those are killed by manipulating the environment and are a part of the puzzles.

The focus for the game is very much puzzle platforming, and the lack of frustrating elements such as time-sequences and very difficult fights made the experience better for me. The "Valhalla" level was scary and breathtaking without a single scary monster, and that's a great achievement in my book. Just like "Legends", I'm giving it 80%, but if we had a more refined scoring system, it's probably a few points ahead.

This game feels janky as Lara tend to glitch through objects or just flip out whenever she wants to, and the camera being so jittery made me feeling dizzy and uncomfortable. Playing for a long period of time made me feeling a bit motion sick.
As for the levels themselves, they are not very straight forward and the game is not clear where you can and can't climb. It's fine having more open levels, but at least have some sort of compass or something.
Combat and whatnot is alright, and there's a decent enemy variety but they all mostly behave the same by rushing you and smacking you down on the ground. Platforming is probably the most fun I had in the game even if as mentioned, Lara is a bit glitchy. I didn't really like the puzzles, they don't feel as creative as in Anniversary or even Legend.
Decent game I suppose, if you can handle the annoying camera. But I don't recommend it.

Tomb Raider: Underworld is a decent game, but one that suffers from a number of issues. The game looks pretty good for a game from 2008, and controls fairly smoothly in most regards. Combat is nothing special, but isn't bad. The story is decent, if somewhat clichéd, the art direction is pretty good, and the environments and level design are pretty good. The main problems with the game are technical, and with regard to climbing controls.

In terms of technical aspects, the game doesn't run the best, at least on PS3 where I played it. Frame rate stutters fairly frequently, for starters, and the game crashed on me three times throughout my playthrough. Nothing crippling, but certainly annoying. My biggest gripe, however, is with the climbing. When it works it's pretty darn good, but the problem is it doesn't work very well about 5% of the time, which results in very frequent issues, considering how much various terrain climbing you do in this game (A LOT). Instances of the controls not doing what I wanted them to do were frequent, usually resulting in failed or misread jumps, often leading to my death. Throughout my playthrough of the game I must have died at least 30 times due to the game's poor handling of my inputs with regard to climbing and jumping. The saving grace is that checkpoints are very frequent, which made it tolerable.

Without the technical problems and climbing issues, this game could have been an easy 8/10, but I think a 7/10 fits it best, all told. It's a fun game, but not something I can strongly recommend. There are certainly better games of its type, and no doubt even better games in the Tomb Raider franchise itself. Worth a go, but certainly not essential gaming.

Took me over 4 years to get round to completing this game but I finally got through it. I am just not too keen on spiders ok? At least they are not super massive ones! Anyway, Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider is always a well polished game. Underworld does have a bit of faff around it and I do prefer Legend and Anniversary but it's still a great yarn.

The most Enjoyable Tomb Raider in the series yet, surpassing it's prequel Legend in it's size, beauty and luscious environments. This is what Tomb raider was always supposed to be, but Eidos never quite made it. The combat is still pretty naff, but thank god there's not too much of it. The adventuring is great, with a bit of challenge but never the frustration of earlier Tomb Raider Games. Works perfectly with Nvidia 3D which is also a nice bonus!

Этакая смесь двух предыдущих частей, вобравшая в себя всё лучшее из каждой (сюжет, кинематографичность, масштабные интересные паззлы и крутые ловушки), с отличным графоном, идеальный современный Tomb Raider.

The story is pretty lame. And the ending is even worse. But the gameplay is pretty fun. I enjoyed running and climbing through the rather basic puzzles. There wasn't anything particularly challenging. It was a rather casual Tomb Raider experience. I haven't played a Tomb Raider game since Tomb Raider II, which was very challenging, so to me this was a nice change of pace. And it was nice to finally complete a Tomb Raider game.

Not as good TR 2013. Ignoring the improvements that were made to the genre with 2013 and the Uncharted series, this was a rather enjoyable game.

Beautiful to look at and fun to play, Underworld might have some technical issues and may seem rushed because of its short length, but it's nonetheless a good entry in the Tomb Raider franchise that every fan of the last two games should undoubtedly play.

Game is so buggy. Also lags at times (on a GTX 780, game was made in 2008...) affecting the physics engine. Because of this, I cannot get past the box stacking puzzle because the boxes fly EVERYWHERE when I place them down.

Very nice platforming and puzzles. The camera using keyboard and mouse is terrible, but it gets much better using a gamepad.

This game has very nice graphics. That's all the positives I can say, right there. Controls are flaky, plot is ridiculous, combat feels limp wristed and inconsequential, the camera is a nightmare that causes cheap deaths galore, and graphical glitches are not uncommon. Worst of all the levels are some of the most unintuitive confusing schlock I've ever had to endure. The puzzles are drop dead simple but still manage to be a complete pain to solve thanks to artificial contrivances. So if you want to look at a sexy Lara and marvel at beautiful vistas, this game allows that. If you actually want to have fun however, you won't find it in this tomb no matter how long you raid it.

The levels all looked gorgeous and the story was a great continuation from Legend but the controls were so awkward and most puzzles were very unclear. It could have been great, but due to that it's barely average.

One of the best Tomb Raider games in the franchise. Fixed almost all issues that Legend had, but introduced a new one: possibly the worst camera in the history of games.

Disappointing.
Tomb Raider Underworld was a let down. The game play was quite boring and the level design uninspired. It felt a bit like a chore to complete this game.
The fighting is as bad as ever, Lara is even sexier than before and the graphics are really good.

After finally playing, I genuinely don't understand the flak this game received compared to Ann. & especially Legend. The puzzles, platforming & level design felt a lot sharper than either. Grphx are flippin' stunning. It was also longer.
