Pure fun and enjoyment from beginning to end. It's definitely one of the best Mario ever made and love the integration of the nostalgic OG 2D Mario into the game. This has got to be one of the games that everyone who owns a Switch must have in their library.

The mechanics are solid and the gameplay is fluid, but some parts of it feel tacked on in order to extend the play time for no reason. It explores all aspects of the platforming genre and its shapeshifting mechanic never gets stale.

After I acquired the Nintendo Switch, there were two games my friends kept telling me to play: Zelda Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey.

As a huge fan of 3d platform games (my first experience with the genre was Croc and Spyro) I had to give Super Mario a try first.

I never played 64, nor Sunshine, but I did play Mario Galaxy and that was really fun! What welcomed me in Odyssey was a whole other world of surprise.

It is honestly a return to form for the plumber, a nod to Mario 64 in the best way possible. It ends up innovating in a whole other level than it's predecessors.

The movement is amazing and cappy really expands Mario's movement. The levels are really fun and very varied. The graphics are breathtaking for a Switch game. And the soundtrack is a class act.

I 100% this game and I almost did it twice. It's a joy to play. The level of challenge waz just right.

It's still a 10/10 for me but there were two things I disliked: the uninspired bosses and the humongous amount of moons (then again the second one is an optional achievement). There are two levels i defined as crazy hard, but I'll leave that for you to find ;)

Any game i go back to is instantly a 10/10

6 years after release and having watched playthroughs and speedruns on the game and blasting through it in just 3 days, I have finally experienced Mario odyssey for myself. Even though I had a majority of the game spoilt for me, there were still so many elements I didn't see and was able to experience for the first time. The worlds and characters are so vastly diverse from each other and yet feel so consistent and onbrand for this game, I just cant help but smile and be at awe at some locations, add to that a excellent soundtrack makes the game even more memorable, the only gripe I have at times is that motion controls are needed to perform some actions which I wasn't able to do but them only being occasionally and not game changing balances out the experience.

The very beginning of the game indicates that this is not an ordinary adventure - everything is in place here, from the animation, through the wonderful atmospheric music, up to the gameplay solutions (such as turning into a frog, a rocket, bird etc.). The closest similarity (very positive) is Super Mario Galaxy, but this game's hud also draws from Zelda BoTW. The locations are wonderfully made, especially the 2d sequences in the 3d world, furthermore you feel that there is a sense of collecting coins, which you can spend later on different outfits. In addition, I didn't expect open locations with a map and the possibility to travel by mount in a Mario game! Mini-games like the Bound Bowl Grand Prix or skipping on a skipping rope are done brilliantly. It's incredible I haven't experienced any problems with camera, while in the older 3d mario games it was a pain in the ass. The game is very well optimized, running at a smooth 60fps, which is not so obvious on such outdated hardware as a nintendo switch. Bosses are very creatively done, while the pattern of defeating them is the same - three strikes after exposure. It would have taken me a very long time to pass the game at 100%, I think the only downside of the game is that it gives few clues on how to discover what's beyond the required minimum - for some this may be an added bonus, but I don't feel the need in this particular game to do everything, perhaps mainly due to the fact that nintendo itself has no achievement system to keep me interested in grinding. An additional surprise was also how much content there is after completing the main storyline, especially online. The last sequence in the game with the final boss is exquisitely done. Overall, this is one of the most polished games I've ever played, even though it doesn't quite hit my tastes because I'm not a big fan of platformers, I can appreciate its great mastery of developers. Yet I think its slightly worse than Mario Galaxy.

This game was the seventeenth game in my longplay series on Twitch. As a longplay, this didn't take that much time at all, since playing up to the credits is pretty quick, but when I played this casually and 100%'d it, it took a lot longer. Super Mario Odyssey was a long time coming. Ever since Mario 64, released 21 years prior, the 3D Mario games have continuously drifted further and further from the sandbox-style open worlds of Mario's 3D debut. This doesn't represent a lack in quality, of course, but there's no doubt that 3D Mario titles have become more and more linear as time went on. From Sunshine, a still mostly open game with some linear stages, to 3D World, a game defined by its linearity. In that way, Odyssey broke the mold; it ditched the linear models of Mario games prior for sprawling, open levels with multiple paths of traversal. It was the first game to live up to—and, in most cases, greatly surpass—the level of freedom that Mario 64 offered. SMO launched on the Switch in its debut year, and much like Breath of the Wild a few months prior, it was a perfect fit. On Nintendo's most unique and groundbreaking console came Mario's most expressive and open adventure.

Without a doubt, the biggest standout in Odyssey is Mario's companion, Cappy. While many family-friendly games suffer from the "protagonist's annoying marketable companion" cliché, which only serves to detract from the main gameplay, Odyssey is defined by how much Cappy adds to it. Because of Cappy, Mario's movement is more fluid and expressive in Odyssey than it's ever been before, and that gives both the developer and the player an impressive amount of options. For the first time in the 3D Mario series, most objectives feel like there's no "right" way to approach them, which benefits both a casual and a veteran audience. Players can cover quite a serious amount of ground, both horizontally and vertically, with Mario's moves in Odyssey, which means that there's so many opportunities for skips and tricks. This all culminates in an extremely satisfying gameplay experience. The capture mechanic, as well, is something that, in a lesser game, might have been an annoying gimmick that disrupted the game's pacing. In Odyssey, however, it's another seamless addition that feels right at home in the Mario world. The freedom presented by Cappy alone is staggering, but combine that with the myriad of captures, and there really is nearly no limit to what you can accomplish in this game.

Odyssey is also nearly limitless in its rewards, but that's a lot more of a mixed bag. For previous 3D Marios, the maximum amount of collectables was usually 120. Fitting of its larger scope, SMO obliterates this number, with 880 total unique moons in the game. And while it can sometimes feel strange to complain about there being too much content in a game, there's no doubt that Mario Odyssey has a quantity/quality problem in its main collectable. Moons are scattered throughout each world with such regularity that collecting them loses some of its luster. Going for 100% completion as well is a laborious task that doesn't give the same satisfaction as previous titles. In addition, and probably due to the large number of moons available, some challenges are just plain frustrating or tedious. Fortunately, it doesn't hurt SMO's general enjoyment that much, although it does affect its replayability somewhat. Luckily, there are plenty of great moons—in great kingdoms—so it's not something that affects the excellent base gameplay often.

The term "Odyssey" is derived from a Greek epic tale of travel and adventure, so perhaps there's no better term than that to accompany this game. It's a massively open game, and it's coupled with some of the best worlds the Mario series has to offer. Even the worst worlds are well designed enough, and the standouts—Metro Kingdom, Sand Kingdom, Wooded Kingdom, to name just a few—are unbelievably impressive and instantly iconic. It's hard to imagine Mario looking any better than this, too; worlds are beautifully colored, and most possess plenty of their own character. This distinction makes revisiting them feel natural and gives extra incentive for players to search out every nook and cranny of the more well-designed worlds. The soundtrack is, of course, nothing short of fantastic. SMO contains such an impressive soundscape that you can almost feel yourself becoming nostalgic for the songs in real-time, such is the degree of the quality of music in this game.

Prior to its release, fans had every right to be skeptical that a game like Super Mario Odyssey would ever exist again. It certainly didn't fit the trend, and fans would be forgiven for expecting that this type of Mario game was a thing of the past. But, ever unpredictable, Nintendo brought the series back to its 3D roots, and indeed, expanded on them greatly. After the release of Odyssey, what lies next for 3D Mario has never been less certain. Bowser's Fury seems to indicate that there may be more Odyssey-like games to look forward to in the future, but the one thing that's for certain is that, if the next Mario game is as good as this one, Nintendo is free to go in any direction they like.

Finally a Mario game with some style.

This is the final stop on my marathon. I was hyped to play this game when it was released. Snatched a copy right on launch day. It was almost 10 years since the last full blown 3D Mario game, Galaxy 2. My first playthrough of this game was very fast, I was shocked to see the credits scrolling on my screen after barely 10 hours of gameplay. Though it was probably my own fault, since I only collected the bare minimum of required moons to run the ship. My second time around with the game was much more gratifying since I tried to collect as many moons from each world as I could. Even so, I felt the devs should have increased the required amount of moons needed to fuel the ship.
The underlying structure of game progression is the same. Collect a number of these, unlock new worlds, get to Bowser. But I love the fact that the game didn’t boot me out of the world after collecting a moon. This meant each world could have a crap ton of moons, without any discontinuity. Most of them involved a clever puzzle, mini-game, or hiding spot. Among my favorite were the classic 2D platforming sequences. The gameplay really wasn’t anything special, but something about seeing the oldest Mario game, in the newest Mario game made me smile. Other moons warped me to a separate mini platforming game, usually with a little twist. Most were pretty fun, and changed things up a bit.
And we can’t talk about Odyssey without talking about the cap, which basically made Mario into Kirby. Taking control of classic Mario baddies was a lot of fun. Even just running around as a goomba was amusing. Each had some ability that would help level progression. Goombas could walk on ice. Latikus could fish out moons. Tanks could blast through rock barriers. Flying drybones could get my past lava. Just a bunch of cool abilities. I found myself throwing my hat at every moving thing to see if I could posses it. My favorite by far were these long legged nut enemies. Winding them up to reach places was a neat way to explore the forest world.

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best 3D platforming games ever released, you'd be doing a diservice to yourself not to at least experience this game once if you are a fan of platforming games.

The only complaint is the value of moons feel diminished due to how many there are but if you are playing casually, they feel great and worth it, however as someone who completed the game 100%, it'll add up overtime the tedium of collecting them all.

Mario Odyssey is very well executed and cute. It was a perfect comfort game to me and really satisfying.
