+Simple and workable combat+Series of great boss fights
+Hides it’s secret really well in the environments
-Relies too much on throwing as many enemies as it can at you for difficulty
-Lacks any health mechanics within combat with limited health
-At times game is too dark to see the environment properly
Overview:
Death’s Door is a decent top down hack n slash which is held together with with a world built around well hidden secrets and a series of interetsing and unique bosses. It unforunately held back by a tendency to try and get dark souls level difficulty by throwing as many enemies waves at the player as possible. There is also issus where things aren’t easy to see on the screen and can be easily missed.

I'll start off with the nice. The art style and narrative of the game are beautiful, those aspects are fantastically well done. I think the theming and messaging in the game surrounding the concept of death is really captivating and I think it's well executed. The main issues with the game are in the combat. The base combat itself is fine, I think the attacks and movement of the crow is perfectly good, but the enemy designs and wave based combat just isn't fun. Regular enemies have very unclear wind-ups and it can be hard to anticipate their attacks unless you are very familiar with their attack pattern. And then for difficulty the game just relies on wave based, borderline spammy combat which again isn't very enjoyable, it's just frustrating. It might be a bit more forgivable if the healing system was a little better as well, I can't say the very limited healing is very good for the game. The lack of a map is annoying as well, I can keep a limited mental map of some small areas no problem, but it was outside my mental capacity to remember the entirety of the map which got confusing. And then the dungeons of opening doors into a secondary dungeon to reach the main boss got pretty repetitive as well. Many of the bosses themselves are actually great though, a little rough in some areas but completely enjoyable as they have a good amount of polish. The only boss I didn't enjoy was the final boss, but all the others are great.Overall, great art style and narrative, but the combat isn't very fun aside from the bosses, and the gameplay is pretty tedious. It's not terrible, it's just tough to enjoy.

There's some really amazing worldbuilding in this game, but that's its only particular strength. Other than the eulogies, I found the dialogue pretty weak, and the gameplay is much slower than a linear dungeon crawler should be. The difficulty also swings back and forth pretty drastically, with most bosses being a walk in the park and some random enemy encounters being absurdly punishing.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Eu gostei demais desse jogo!

I give Deaths Door a 7.5-8/10. The combat was great and challenging. The story was good, nothing breathtaking but it kept me interested in the floor. It was simple and fun. The music in this game was great. Bosses were fun and a challenge as well.Finding the hidden collectables doesn't add to much to the game but also doesn't take away.
Not much variety in the combat and the enemies. Yes you get some weapons but doesn't change the gameplay loop too much

exploration was fun but the 'riddles' were way too easy, can't even call them riddles really. Combat is fine. Some bosses are well designed, I liked the Witch and the Frog especially. The Yeti and the final 2 bosses (no true end boss) weren't as well designed. The gauntlet on the final boss was such terrible design and I don't mean difficulty wise because you could cheese it brutally. Crow boss had terrible hit box detection imo. It's overall an okay game. Upgrade system is total ass though. finding 4 hidden altars for 1 single upgrade? Finished the game without finding 4 of the same. Not that I looked all that hard.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

36 hours includes 2 full playthroughs (as to 100% steam achievements you have to beat the game on umbrella (hard) mode).this game is brilliant. one of the most charming games i've played in a while. the dialogue has this humorous irreverence to it that goes hand-in-hand with its heavy story and ideas- really reminded me of majora's mask. the presentation and atmosphere of the game is incredible, and there were lots of fun and clever secrets to keep me engaged.
combat and boss fights feel incredibly satisfying and the game, while challenging, is not punishing or sadistic. love love loved it, but nothing really jumped out and shocked me, so it's sitting at a delightful 85.

A great rougelike esque gane that has such a quirky artstyle and smooth battl system. It has humour and intruge and I absolutely loved playing this gameArt 5/5 - I loved the look of this game - so many characters are just little guy but each one is unique and distinct. it's one I have always been aware of and is very recogniseable to being this game in particular. the scenery is also beautiful. there are endless details that can be used for future elements and There are so many things that make you stop and wonder if it is part of the puzzle or something to throw you off the scent
Story 4/5 - now I am being harsh on this one as I know the end of the game does not mean the end of the story. there is an ending to this game and a 'true' ending upon further completion. the normal end did leave me with a lot of questions and had been a very good motivator to try get more information. I will say one part of the story I felt a bit let down with is ( the character of death I felt they could have had more of a feature than they did. otherwise I quite enjoyed piecing together what was happening by talking to NPCs and collecting certain shiny items
Gameplay 4/5- The combat in this is very fluid. Your abilities slowly build as you move through the story which in turn allows you to acces new areas and secrets. During fights there is alot to be said about learning patterns as well. This game goes well to force your hand into being patient and methodical. you are rewarded for learning the way each enemy attachs and fighting accordingly - even with the boss fights. there are also may puzzle elements in this game which I really enjoyed that were unique and simple enought to go through - I would have liked to see this explored a little more but it was still fun without it
Music 5/5 - I will have to admit that since playing this I may have spent a day or two listening to the sound track. Its brilliant. each area has its own sound, the enviromental sounds work perfectly and nothing is more satisfying than the little pop the forest spirit flowers make - just perfect
Enjoyment 5/5 - I absolutely loved this game and highly reccomend that avery one give it a go. it has many elements that reminded me of gmaes like tunic in its style and play but just has that little more umph in my opinion. I have not 100% the gmae but will deffinately be going back to it at somepoint for that 100% goal. its such a fun and interesting game to play

Great Zelda-like, and I have to insist on that since I've read a lot of misleading informations about Death's Door. I mean, you can see it as a Soulslike if beating a boss in more than three tries feels like Dark Souls to you, but honestly, we're far from FromSoft here. As for the metroidvania influence, it directly comes from A Link to the Past being the Unspoken Godfather of the Genre. There's not too much backtracking in Death's Door, no true interconnected areas, dungeons, and most of the roads opened through upgrades only leads to secrets/collectibles. So yes, you have shorcuts and dozens of collectibles with only lore-purpose, but it doesn't change the fact that it's overall a good old top-down Zelda. And by good I mean : really good. The game, as I said, is great. Way better than I expected. Artstyle is cool, the game is full of funny details or dialogue, the settings are great, difficulty curve is close to perfection and everything, from the most simple puzzle to the hardest boss, is at least interesting. Awesome gamefeel. Only cons in my opinion :
- RPG elements are purely ornamental. You never really feels stronger or quicker after upgrading your abilities. Same for the weapons.
- overuse of closed arenas instead of mini-bosses.
- the optional content is, well... questionable. I mean it's not as optional as it seems at first. So good luck trying to complete the game without upgrading any spell (especially the fire one). Sure, it's optional : you have to beat secret bosses, but since the game never tells how rewarding it will be, you can deprive yourself from very useful tools in your arsenal. In a general way, I think there's no point in trying to do a main story run for Death's Door. Sooner or later, you will step aside the critical path. And that's a good point. The issue here is how the game never really invites you to.
- true/secret ending wasn't really necessary in my opinion. It's not too hard, just too long.
Anyway, great game, highly recommended.

Updated 7 Months Ago

I might update it to 10/10 once I sit with it for a bit longer, but for now it's staying at a 9/10 because I'm not sure I like it as much as Hollow Knight.Edit: Umbrella run brings it down to 9/10. Death's Door is a great Dark Souls/Zelda/Metroidvania game. I enjoyed the hard yet satisfying combat and the overall charm of the game. Really well hidden secrets and collectibles all around the world, which makes exploration and backtracking worth it. Amazing writing and characters that had me smiling and laughing out loud. I had originally gotten stuck at some point, so I ended up putting the game down, but I came back and finished it so I could cross it off my backlog. I am glad that I ended up finishing and pursuing some side content within the game. It was made with so much love and passion, from a two person team no less. Death's Door is certainly worth its asking price and I would highly recommend trying out the game if it seems like it would be up your alley.Updated 9 Months Ago

Genuinely a really great game. I can see now why this game made a lot of appearances on a lot of youtube indie gaming channel. Death's Door is an excellent game. The soundtrack was a delight, sound design was solid, the combat was good, wonderful atmosphere and the exploration was the star of the show.Game had great pacing and the flow of the gameplay was strong enough that the game kept a consistent funnel through the experience where you never felt like you were losing sight of the objective or the game was losing its grip on you.
I think for the weaker parts of the game is that some of the secret hunting didn't feel so good as the game is.. big. So the areas you have to search for shrines (ignoring the unnecessary lore collectables) felt time consuming and detracted from my desire to do the end game content as scouring the maps for stuff thrice is a bit much.
And the combat could've done with some work, felt a little janky and unfair sometimes. But I think death's door is a game where the developers played to the studios strengths and focused on what they could do best. I feel like that shows through when you play the game as I don't think combat was their strong suit (though still enjoyable!) and they focused on making what felt good that they could reasonably do.
Regardless. Great game, big recommend. Absolutely worth the 20$ I paid for the switch edition.
