My problems with this game boil down to how they seemed to want to make everything as easy and streamlined as possible to reach the widest audience they could. It ultimately felt like a pretty trip through a standard JRPG plot, well told as it was, but without much to challenge or provoke thought. So many things were designed in this way, from being able to allow the AI to fight battles for you (as a totally viable strategy 95% of the time) to almost never even having to try to avoid enemies in the field as you can just run around them, to dungeons that are really simple and straightforward. It's disappointing because I've loved Dragon Quest in the past (especially VII) and the game is so beautiful and charming.

My impressions replaying with some Draconian Mode features--Hero must survive/Tough Enemies/Exp cutoff for weak enemies. I love it, has made this run what I wished it would have been the on my first clear--challenging but not incredibly punishing. Highly recommend these be turned on even for first playthrough if you have any RPG experience.

Enemies can actually catch you off guard with hard mode, and the exp cutoff feature just makes sense to keep things somewhat competitive when you're hunting materials or rare monsters, so you don't overlevel. "The Hero must survive" feature might annoy some, but I feel like it adds some tension to combat knowing you can't retry the fight immediately. I think those three features are a great middle ground of being challenging without punishing the occasional mistake too harshly.

I've been playing RPGs and JRPGs for about 20 years, and something about this game just hits every note of the classics that I've come to appreciate, with just enough modern polish to make it even more accessible for new players. Some may think it's an outdated game design with the linear areas, but to me it feels comfy to be constrained by the map a bit. It's done well, unlike in some similar games like Final Fantasy XIII (overall pretty enjoyable, but wasn't really impressed by the level/map design).

For DQ11, I don't think it would have been better as open world design like they had initially discussed--it feels better to be as it is, not too overwhelming for exploring a bit. Just my opinion.

Overall, it's like a love letter to and harmonization of all the best things turn based RPGs have to offer. Can't wait to see what DQXII will do to follow this one.

Act 1 and 2 are so great, but act 3 brings it down a few notches by how grindy it is and how it back tracks some character development; it completes the story though, a story that's pretty cookie cutter jrpg but it's good. The characters are one of the best parts of the game, regardless of the game dragging on longer than it needed to.

Act 1 and 2 are a 9/10 probably a 10/10, act 3 is a 7/10.

While it's not a bad game, I did end up getting tired of it. I feel like it gets repetitive in many of its mechanics, and the entire arc after the fall of the World Tree completely kills the momentum of the game.

Amazing classic JRPG that reminded me of the games I enjoyed growing up. Some quality of life improvements, like the TACTICS allowing auto-combat, were really great. The traditional fantasy, power-of-friendship story was right up my alley and I smiled for much of the game. Pretty much loved all the characters and even though I’ve rolled credits, I’ve got to play the “post game” stuff

I love JRPGs, but I never bother to finish them to "100%". But this one got me, and I spend over 140h to finish everything to get all achievements.
It's classic in it's design, but wonderfully designed ! If you love the genra, you'll love this one !

The mermaid portion and beyond has some of the worst writing ive ever seen in a game.
- the kiddy jokes get old. (i enjoyed them at 1st but they very much start to feel forced)
- boss fights are VERY RNG heavy with added gimmicks to make some even worse. i only died like 3 times but the 2nd attempts always made me feel like the game wasnt about skill. *me: miss, miss, miss. them: AoE + crit 2x* VS *me: hit, miss, hit. them: miss (STAND AROUND DOING NOTHING) then tickle you*.....
- trash fights started fun but become brainless. *control main character or fight wisely* *show no mercy x2* *focus healing* = i mostly play when running around or on boss fights.
- items. not sure if these get used more later in the game. the only item i used was magic water for some mp
- the pep quests are designed to get you to grind exp. i quit the 1st two after 30min+ (each) of not being able to line up the people needed.
- pep felt useless since only 1 or 2 people would trigger during any boss fight and its 100% unnecessary for trash mobs
- music. as much as i like DQ sounds and music it just felt like they tossed in stuff from other games and theres nothing original
- RARE MONSTERS...this was such a cool idea....1 quest and never seen again? im not going to fight every monster 30 times to see if it has a rare version or if that rare version even has something worth the time to find it. would like to have seen pep quests replaced with more of these. missed opportunity?: instead of pep powers, monster super attacks. find the rare, kill it, equip the super to a character.

a mermaid waits for 50 YEARS on/around an island for a man she saved and knew for a couple months cause shes too stupid/stubborn to swim and see what happened to him after he leaves and promises to come back (cause theyre in love). you come along and she sends you like a dog to find out. when you report to her the man is dead she doesnt accept what you have to say and makes the both of you GO THERE TOGETHER ANYWAYS. mermaids are supposed to have to marry someone to get legs....she simply puts on a veil and gets legs. next she KILLS HERSELF over a dude she knew for a few months when its said their life span is OVER 500 years...this is 100% a 1st draft writing effort by a stalker 12 y/o

retired after getting all orbs and seeing im still in act 1 of 3. dropping another 25hrs+ would ruin the parts i did enjoy.

+ crafting. having the choice to buy good gear or make really good gear is nice.
+ exploring. really enjoyed looking for mats, recipes and treasure
+ graphics. simple, bright, akira toriyama
+ gay guy my favorite character
IF I LIKED THE GAME
+ 100% could see replaying in 2D mode

for me this game fails to figure out who it wants its audience to be. you got kid jokes, bright colors, endless forgiveness, easy to follow quest markers, story that tosses stuff in just to continue the story even if it makes no sense, and simple graphics. on the other hand you have puff, puff/bars, garters, see through stalkings and cleavage, RNG heavy boss fights, suicide, possession, and a pervert old man quest.

Pretty fun, but I felt I was done after "beating" the game, but not moving on to the considerable end game. I know that it's a major part of the experience and I might get back to it eventually, but that was enough for now.

It was very easy, but it allows you to skip battles by seeing enemies on the map. I basically skipped every single avoidable fight and was always at an appropriate level for a challenging but doable battle. Only 1 or 2 bosses required me to "catch up" by grinding a single level or two, and these were always because I needed a particular spell (a group heal, cure a status effect, etc., that I got at the next level up and was clearly assumed for the fight).

Great fucking game, a bit long in the 3rd act going back in time is always hard in video games, going through the same bosses is kinda boring even though you change the outcome, and i feel like veronica's death held way more weight and was a bolder and more interesting choice throughout, that said, even though it's not the best JRPG i've played, it really shows how much this series is the pillar of the genre

Excellent jrpg. Recommended. A little long winded. The feel goods make up for it. It’s definitely shorter than my run time. I played 90 hours on Draconian mode. I stopped at Hotto hot springs the second time. The mini forge was a bunch of hours. I finished the game regular about level 68-70. Super fun. Wish I took the time to finish draconian mode. Maybe later. Too much in the backlog right now.

post-ironic cliche tropes done right with some Yoko Taro influences (don't ask me why)

ultimate bedtime fairy tale with great characters and fantastic vibes living in a world of Akira Toriyama's artwork

- music is a letdown but you have an option to use the DQ VIII overworld theme so do that
- default overworld music theme is rage quit inducing EAR CANCER
- i'd recommend using "stronger monsters" draconian option because the default game is too easy in the beginning
- Act 2 was a drag but for a reason
- Act 3 is not a "post-game"
- Act 3 is what really makes this game special and unique, it IS essential to the story and actually pretty amazing and extremely satisfying
- this game is better than final fantasy VII remake

could have been better if not the ear cancer music and strange difficulty curve, but you know what?

I don't care

I think this is a very good game for an rpg. The bosses can get pretty nasty in difficulty. But thankfully it doesn't require you to get to level 99 if you just want to finish the main story. The characters are very fun, and the story was nice. There are some moments of trying to get a certain material or find a certain enemy for a quest which can be very annoying. Overall, the issues are minor and it certainly is a great rpg to play for fans.

Act 1 was generic and boring, but the story in Act 2 is really interesting and at this point the gameplay picks up. However it's very long, and boring for the first 30 hours.

If you like 90's era JRPG's, this is basically the only modern game with that type of gameplay. Best of the Dragon Quests, but can be improved if they allowed more skills to be learned earlier and if the later quests weren't such grind fests.

It's funny to remember now that within the first few hours I felt slightly disappointed. Dragon Quest is well known for being very conservative, but XI is the first official episode to bring absolutely nothing new to the series. I ended up considering that the answer, in fact, was perhaps there: almost 15 years after the last true Dragon Quest, Square Enix returned with a perfect synthesis of everything that the series is and doest best: epic storyline, characters quickly turning into good friends, old-school but refined gameplay, great music and Akira Toryama. Did we really need something else?

Had to abandon Dragon Quest XI at 95% of completion...it's annoying that despite I'm at level 99 with all characters and have some of the best equipments in the game, in order to beat yet another secret boss of the game I have to spend like 20 hours at the game casino playing poker or the roulette getting tokens to acquire some materials. then I was supposed to spend other dozens of hours finding other materials in the dungeons where these materials pop up once per run

These are the things I hate about games...it's not about being able to play well, ability, or anything...just do stupid things to get stupid side-equipments that are used only for one specific boss. and even with that equipment, you need luck that the boss doesn't target specific members of the party otherwise you have to start all over again

I kind of ended the main story feeling kind of whelmed. While the story had some highs and interesting twists to the classic adventure story, it still felt very safe and unoriginal. The gameplay was also good but I wouldn't say it was exceedingly captivating. The characters were well designed and had cool backstories, but I didn't really connect with any of them.

There is a lot to unpack here.

The game is a great tribute to the series as a whole, and while it is quite a slow burn, its pacing is not bad at all. There are tons of things to do and most of them are fun (not you, pep quests, you suck). It is interesting how much this game draws from Final Fantasy X, which is also considered by many as a turning point in a franchise (although the equivalent to DQ 11 would actually be FF 9).

Sadly, most of the things that were taken from FFX are not really great. The sphere grid level up system was improved for DQ 11, and retains part of the individuality of each character, also being more rewarding to grind. The segmented, corridor-world however is a major step back from DQ 8. It sure is pretty, but claustrophobic and surprisingly dull. The world feels much smaller than it actually is, albeit harder to navigate.

The story has some major tonal shifts and mind bends, and sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, but mostly they fade into the hype of the next big thing. This might frustrate some, to me it just felt a bit like Dragon Ball, which is not bad, just unusual. It also made me think that maybe something that leaned more towards Dragon Ball would be an interesting new take for the series. But I digress.

Another step back in relation to DQ 8 is the Fun Sized Forge when compared to the Alchemy Pot. The forge does have its strong points, but they take very long to shine. That being said, there is no reason for one to eliminate the other, as they are not exactly do the same thing. It just feels like an unnecessary trade-off.

Coupled with this, we get the mobage-like equipment. This I just disliked in general. Why would a piece of equipment have 5% more efficiency agains an enemy type? I understand this might make a difference when talking huge damage outputs, but that's not the case in the first dozens of hours, where most of this type of equipment appears and can be improved on the forge. The same goes for skills, which also might be downplayed depending on the builds. Pieces of equipment, as they are ever so numerous, should be more meaningful. The alchemy pot had a partial solution for that.

Even with all the drawbacks, DQ 11 really shine by having a few charismatic characters, great atmosphere to the world and tons of things to explore. It does feel like much of it could have been better, but it's still one of my favourite entries in the series. It is definitely not DQ 8 or DQ 5, but it was a great return to form, and makes me look forward for the next iteration.

Dragon Quest XI has been clogging up my backlog for the last 5 years. I always envisioned it as this massive untouchable JRPG that I could never hope to conquer. And for may years that was the case. Never getting too far into the story and always hitting this wall where it seemed as if I wanted to continue, I would be forced to grind for hours on end. But readers, let me tell you I have finally climbed to the top of this mountain. I have seen the light of Yggdrasil for myself, finally after all this time. However, that light may be a little bit blinding. After spending nearly 60 hours with the game, my largest complaint lies in the fact that the story could have been told in half the time, if not even less so. A significant chunk of this game is told through cutscenes and lengthy scenes of dialogue, but there are many moments where the story feels like it is intentionally trying to draw out the length of a segment. If you cut all of the unneeded fat off of this game, you would save about 10-15 hours easy, and that's not including reducing the amount of repetitive gameplay either. It's crazy that a JRPG can still release these days and not have any time saving ways to cut down on grinding, or even different accessibility options. With that said, all of these being my biggest problems with the title, I still couldn't be more excited for DQXII. I hope to see the team improve what was done here, and hone it into something that I can truly call a modern masterpiece. DQXI is without a shadow of a doubt, a fantastic and wonderful experience. I'm so glad I finally got to see it for what it is, but even after going through it, I still don't know if I can say that it was worth all the time spent.

I've heard people explain this game as JRPG comfort food. I think that's the perfect way to put it. The story is basic, the battle system is basic, the whole game is basic. But there's something enjoyable about it.

I've played to a certain point in the game in English but I've replayed to the mid point in Japanese. There are definitely differences so it's hard for me to talk about the English version. However, if you want what is basically a bedtime story in long form this is the game for you.
