This game is rated highly for a very good reason. I have never experienced such good writing from a game before. Honestly I don't think I've experienced such good writing from any entertainment medium ever (although to be fair I don't watch many movies). The voice acting is incredibly well done and the game fits together so incredibly well. The way that your 'skills' work together and play into the main gameplay systems is so incredibly interesting to me. When I first started playing the game I was incredibly interested and very engaged. After a while of playing that engagement faltered a bit, this is primarily because the game is admittedly quite slow, and after doing all I could think of doing I was locked out of doing much until Day 3. But when Day 3 came around that is when the game became amazing to me. This game was an incredibly enjoyable experience and I don't want to spoil anything about it. I also want to say that I really love the artstyle and graphics of the game.
The game is as incredible as the ratings make it out to be. Beautiful writing and the best worldbuilding I've ever seen from a game before. The characters all feel so incredibly real and you play as a 'loser', as opposed to a hero, and that makes everything so much better. Genuinely love this game, and while I don't think I'll spend too much time playing the game I will be spending a lot of time watching playthroughs.

A literacy masterpiece for all of video games that's only held back by three things. One is the just of blocking off most of the map until Day 3. That's where the game is at is best and it's annoying how the game doesn't let you explore there from the start or at least earlier.
Which ties into my second thing the on boarding process feels incredibly overwhelming and I didn't really click with the game and get into it's groove until Day 3.
Third, I admittedly found the murder mystery aspect of the murder mystery game to be the more boring aspect of it. I was way more into various side content such as Helping the Zoologists and everything to do with the church.
The fourth thing doesn't really count but the Switch port SUCKS and crashes often.
That aside that game deserves every single bit of praise it gets. It's stellar writing, poltical themes, absurdist moments, RPG mechanics, characters (Harry and Kim of course gets praise but I wanna shout out to Idiot Doom Spiral.) Probably the most devastating gut punch I ever had in a game Failing to get Kim to dance which leads to Harry calling him a slur. A phenomenal ending Finally cornering the culprit is an fascinating experience.
Most of my criticisms are for my first experience with the game and a rough time getting into it. But if I were to play the game again it would definitely be elevated higher to a 10/10 experience.

Absolute masterpiece, probably in my top five games of all time. From the political commentary to the stunning music. There are issues, like how the gameplay clearly came secondary to dialogue and story, and how hard of a game Disco Elysium is to get through, but that doesn't matter in the end when it's about the story and dialogue, one of the best games ever made and a must play for anyone interested in games as a mediumUpdated 2 Weeks Ago

i would kill for Lt. Kim Kitsuragi he's an absolute star. I adored the framing of this game and the mystery solving and the way you an spiral out into a million silly little side tasks. The entire end felt like a fever dream in the best way and I have been reliving it in my head for the past 12 hours. I haven't felt so compelled and immersed in a game in a while. I often had to be reminded to eat and get some rest while playing because I was simply unaware of the time passing around me.Updated 2.5 Weeks Ago

At its lowest level, this is nothing more than a dice roller. However, the packaging is nothing short of amazing which makes this one of my favorite games played in the last couple of years. The ending was a little bit rushed and I was hoping for something a little bit different - more explanations gives, more unraveling of what had happened, but that is probably the only flaw I've found that would otherwise make this game a 10 out of 10. It's an amazing experience that one should absolutely focus on sinking in. Solving this case means solving yourself, at least partially, as what happens on the screen can transition to the real life and give us answers to questions we never knew we had.Updated 3 Weeks Ago

REALLY good game.9/10 3d style
10/10 2d style
10/10 writing and voice acting
10/10 worldbuilding
the only thing that I genuinely think could be better is: the dialogue choices are sometimes (too often) too dumb; sometimes I'll say something in a different direction from what I'd like to say simply because the wording is way too dumb. other times there seems to be no reasonable choice and all the possibilities are unbearably dumb (sometimes at least there's a "stay silent" option). I understand that the game doesn't want me to feel like a genius and shit but some choices are just unrealistically stupid and comedic and it seems like the game is asking not to be taken seriously and frankly I think it deserves to be taken seriously and to take itself seriously.
In retrospective: the game wants me to play HDB, not a genius self-insert. the main character is supposed to be a dumbass. Still a bit frustrating sometimes, a bit overdone maybe.

I never finished the game, but got to day 2. I liked it a lot. The art and the music is superb, the voice acting very good, and the gameplay felt OK. I don't mind slow story telling or gameplay with no action. I also loved how they approached telling the history of the town and it's surrounding areas. What made me not continue it I think was a couple of things. The game is very bleak, and it really filled me with sadness from time to time. I don't mind that generally, but I think I was at a point in life when that feeling wasn't the best to get out of my gaming hobby. Plenty of other things to get me depressed outside of gaming. So after a couple of sessions I never felt compelled to play. I did play some more, but never looked forward to it, so it just got put aside.
Gameplay wise I got the feeling that it was easy to lock yourself out of the story by making the wrong choices or the wrong build. I've since heard that you can be softlocked out of the game during the first days. It made me a bit anxious, never feeling like I was playing "the right way" if that makes sense. That feeling also contributed to me not feeling compelled to continue the game. I started playing Cyberpunk 2077 instead.
Anyways, it is a great game still, and I think I will try it out again in the future with a new character, but for now it is retired.

Interesting casual game. Sometimes it felt a little slow and wasn't quite sure what to do and other times I was knocking everything out back to back. Some of the plot or subplot went over my head and the game started to feel like it was dragging on a bit towards the end but that might have been my fault because I went back to finish quests once I realized I crossed a pivotal moment. Overall though a fun and easy to play game.Updated 2 Months Ago

This game will start you off with a huge 'what the f**k is happening' vibe, because it's set in a world that obviously took a long time to craft, with intricate socio-political structures and deep history and lore. You'll maybe want to restart a couple times in the beginning, and that's normal. Once you get a grasp of what's going on, it grips you like a moth to a flame. There's no grind, no meaningless side stories and no downtime. Everything and everyone matters, and no matter how bad you fail every single skill check there's always a way forward. Brillant.Updated 2 Months Ago

From the start when you are overwhelmed and not sure how stuff works and unsure what happend till later on it's brilliant game. The story is well told and it has so many options to deal with every situation and conversations. The music and sound design was also a master piece. Using Sea Power for the OST made the whole experience nostalgic in some way. Props to Lenval Brown who spent eight months recording 350,000 lines of dialogue for this game. After finishing the game I see myself replaying it after some time again to try other characteristics/skills to see what changes. I restarted from scratch the first time after doing the first half and had weeks, sometimes months, of pauzes between playing the game. It was like a really think book I picked up a read everytime a x amount of pages of, even when not playing the game I still though long after playing what I made through in the game. After spending around 100 hours in the game the ending was really nice wrapped up but also felt somewhat quick. Definitely the best game I played this year. I imagine I'll be thinking about the whole story long after I finished it today. Must buy and must play for everyone who is into RPGs and storydriven game.Updated 3 Months Ago

I did not expect to love Disco Elysium as much as I did. I was absolutely stunned by how fantastic it is. It is truly remarkable, and a modern masterpiece. It also really spoke to me, personally, in a lot of ways, which I'll get into. The only reason I even was interested in Disco Elysium is because it has a 97 on Metacritic for the PC version, which is insane. I figured there was no way it'd live up to that, but I was wrong. It really is that good. What makes Disco Elysium good? It's the writing. Disco Elysium is meant to be a CRPG, and is classified as one technically. There are dice rolls and Skills, sure. But the game doesn't really play like a CRPG. There's no combat in this game whatsoever. It plays more like a visual novel, but it's the most enthralling visual novel you'll ever play. The hook of an alcoholic cop who lost his memory being thrust into the rigmarole of an important murder investigation that threatens to start riots is awesome. It's so captivating to follow Harry's journey, learning who he is, trying to recover his memory. His partner through this, Kim, is also a fantastic character in his own right, and I love how Kim reacts to Harry's decisions. In fact, many of the ways the game can end depend on Harry's relationship with Kim. If Kim is present at the end of the game, he'll outright ramble off everything you did, and explain the type of playstyle you used. I saw some people play this game as an bad cop, and then get surprised that Kim lambasted them for it at the end. Kim will tolerate you for the majority of the game, sure, but when it matters most, he'll make sure those decisions you made bite you.
Playing Kim and Harry as friends in my game was really wholesome. I intended to make Harry sober up in my game, and I did succeed with that. In the end, Kim said I was sober for the entire investigation. A whole week. He said I was an amazing cop. That I worked harder than anyone. It made me smile. It made me happy that I could steer Harry onto the path of a redemption arc after he ruined his life by being an alcoholic. In that sense, Disco Elysium is an RPG. You can make Harry be whatever you want, and the game will respond accordingly. There are events in the game that will change depending on how much dialogue you explore, or what dice rolls you pass or not.
I insist on my reviews being spoiler-free so I have to hold back on how much I say here. I want to express that Disco Elysium is one of the most well-written games I've played. And you can argue that it should be if the entire game is dialogue, to which you wouldn't be wrong, but it is still worthy of praise.
Disco Elysium is also one of the few games I've ever played where I want to write a letter to the devs personally and thank them, because the game means a lot to me now. I've dealt with people in my life who have alcoholism. And that's a common theme in this game. Numerous characters suffer from alcoholism, and I love how it's portrayed here. This game should make you dislike alcohol. And it made me hate it even more than I already did. You see how dangerous of a vice it indeed is, and how it can destroy lives and families. It ruined Harry's life. He's lucky he even has the chance to recover some of it in this game by going sober.
The game is also strikingly philosophical. The stuff about 'The Pale' is fascinating. I think that can warrant a whole text passage on its own. That aside, the political commentary is great. It's hilarious how everyone gets jabbed at in this game, no matter your affiliation. It pinpoints flaws in every angle, despite the devs and writers have their own alignment. And if you try to be apolitical like I did, you get called boring, which is funny too. Disco Elysium is actually quite a hilarious game, and I think that aspect is a little underrated. It is genuinely funny at times. I think I laughed for a good few minutes at Harry kicking the mailbox for no reason for instance.
I still feel emotions from this game that I can't quite describe. I feel empty, but... happy? Empty that it's now over, but perhaps happy from the satisfying "good ending" I received. It's a tingly feeling. Maybe it's the Col Do Ma Ma Daqua. I don't know. I just know that this is one of the greatest experiences I've ever had, and I was completely hooked from beginning to end. So, thank you Disco Elysium. I feel so enlightened and enthralled to have experienced you.

There is no other game ever made that is like Disco Elysium. it is mind-bending in the most bizarre ways. The art style is gorgeous, the music is fantastic, the story is incredible, but above all else the world building is second to none. Having to deal with your ever-increasing psychological stresses combined with navigating your way through incredibly political ideas sounds incredibly boring, but it is anything but. Just be prepared for a lot of reading or listening to the voice actors (who are all pretty good, especially the main narrator). For the kind of gamer that this appeals to, Disco Elysium might just be the perfect game.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

Despite being a text-based RPG, Disco Elysium caught my attention thanks to its reception from critics and fans alike. Now, even though Disco Elysium's gameplay loop consists mainly of dialogue, it's actually quite... addictive? Like, it's genuinely an extremely fun game to play because the dialogue is so incredibly engaging, well written and it utilizes some absolutely fantastic ideas that I've never seen before in a videogame. Besides, the gameplay doesn't consist solely of dialogue; the excessive amount of options that affect the story, the characters and even the gameplay, and the impressive skill system heavily enhance the overall experience.
However, the gameplay loop in Disco Elysium is not very important anyway because the game emphasises heavily on its narrative, characters and world building.
As for the narrative... it's one of the best written games I've ever played. The plot is quite simple, sure, but the writing is so goddamn compelling, it pulls you into Disco Elysium's wonderful world and it makes you forget about reality for few hours.
Additionally, the characters are engaging and well written as well, and the visuals and the music are good too.
Unfortunately for a game like Disco Elysium though, a text-based isometric RPG that mainly focuses on the dialogue, there is some fluff here and there.
Also, the handling and movement of the character feel a bit awkward most of the time, but it's not a big deal.
Pros:
+ Fun text-based gameplay loop
+ Deep RPG elements and progression systems
+ Great story
+ Unparalleled writing
+ Very good characters
Cons:
- Unnecessary dialogue in some instances
- Clunky handling
Narrative: 9/10
Gameplay: ?/10
Content: 9/10
Characters: 8/10
Music: 7/10
Art Style: 7/10
Final Rating: 9/10
- Amazing -
Disco Elysium is without a doubt, one of the most well written and engaging videogames I've ever played.
Do I recommend it?:
Yes but it's not for everyone.
If you don't enjoy playing story-driven videogames with a lot of dialogue and RPG elements, don't bother.
Otherwise, give Disco Elysium a try.

One of the most well written games out there with super engaging and hilarious dialogue and great rpg stat system where you get to delve deep into the human psychology.I enjoyed most of my time with it and i say most cause i found the gameplay to be a bit lacking, yes i know there is no combat but there is no puzzles or interaction either, you just click on the text wall, i would have loved it more if i had to interact and solve things.
Also i found the last bit near the ending to be underwhelming and i didn't like most of the tracks.
Its still a good game to play and unique enough to justify its status.
