Revelations was originally made as a 3DS exclusive, and as a handled RE, it's very beautiful, fluid... a real nice job, way better than the main entry released the same year (that, in addition of being dumb, was totally outdated even in the eye of a guy who's not really concerned with technics). As a RE game now, well... there's something like a will to get back to the original formula by focusing on the exploration of a weird uknown location. You're still shooting like, a lot, and probably too much, but Revelations is not a pure TPS like RE5 or 6. Instead, it tries an interesting compromise between pre and post-RE4 games. It works for most part but there are two main issues :
- the game is very linear (and btw pretty easy), which is a little embarassing when you promise exploration
- the atmosphere is... dull. For sure, in 2012, the RE games weren't scarying anyone anymore, but Revelations is probably the less stressful claustrophobic game of all times.
All in all, a good game which will increase with time, but probably never to the point of making it to a best of RE.

VERDICT:
Resident Evil Revelations is a spin-off game and doesn't need to be played to understand the other RE games, putting Jill and Chris just made the game more appealing because they're big characters in the bigger titles. They still did a good job in making this an entertaining survival horror but it's nothing compared to the other titles which is a huge compliment in my eyes because it's a alright game to play.
The main downfall is, I felt a slight repetitiveness from going back and forth inside the ship, aside from that, nothing really else to complain about. I would recommend getting it on a slight sale though, it's not worth it's asking price.
Total Score = 68/100.
SIMILAR GAME LIKE THIS? / REVIEWER PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:
Resident Evil franchise, Days Gone, Aliens: Fireteam Elite.
GAMEPLAY:
Set shortly after the events of Resident Evil 4, the game follows counter-terrorism agents Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield as they try to uncover the truth behind a bio-terrorist organisation that plans to infect the Earth's oceans with a virus. The game features a single-player mode where the player must complete a series of episodes that involve solving puzzles and defeating enemies, and a multiplayer mode where players may fight their way through altered single-player scenarios.
Revelations emphasises survival, evasion, and exploration over fast-paced combat by providing the player with limited ammunition, health, and movement speed. It was designed to bring back the content and horror of the Resident Evil roots, while at the same time trying to modernise the gameplay.

I played this game after RE 0 HD and man that is a great step up. The controls feel nice, the story being told is somewhat interesting, and it kept me on my toes. I would say the game only fell flat when it came to the ending, as it felt a bit rushed. The game didn't leave a sour taste in my mouth, and I felt like I got everything I wanted after the end credit scene.Updated 1 Month Ago

Overall, it was worthwhile playing, even though it is not one of the main titles.Unfortunately, some of the gameplay did feel like a side-game, and the 3D map was atrocious. It would have also been nicer to have a bit more variety in the enemies - it was usually one type per section.
I'm not sure how I felt about the episodic nature of this game, but that did make it go by quite quick by giving you the story in bite-size pieces.
I really liked the cruise area, and think that would have been a great single-location for a for a Resi game - i.e. focus on that location and introduce many more puzzles, letting it feel more like the original games.

Disclaimer: I will be comparing this game to Resident Evil 5, as it is the latest game in the series that I have played and is my best reference point. Some comparisons and contrasts I make may have already happened in other games after 5.Resident Evil Revelations is pretty good in most aspects, and I liked it quite a bit. Nothing in the game screams out as being particularly rotten or bad, but it lacks some shine as well. This can be somewhat of a complicated topic as it was a game originally made for the 3DS which had its own limitations, but I'll try to represent it well.
First off, what's arguably most important: gameplay. Compared to Resident Evil 5, man, it felt like I was finally able to breathe. I experienced that game's controls before in RE4, so they came to me fairly naturally, but when you go from the tank-ish controls to free movement, it's certainly a relief. There are several other upgrades that contribute to this, too, including the ability to shoot and reload while moving. It just makes more sense than the stiffness of the other games. There's also a more integral dodge move, but I found it inconsistent. That said, I played on casual mode, so I think the game may have been trying to do it for me. In addition, the vibe is fairly different as well, at times. I believe I read on the game's wikipedia article that this game was meant to return to the series's roots of more horror than action thriller, but I'm not sure they fully achieved that, leading to a slight identity crisis. While I haven't played the originals yet, I think it's safe to say that the game's opening hour or so definitely fits more among the horror crowd than action. Beyond that, though, it falls into the action trap where I no longer feared the monsters and merely saw them as things I had to beat. This is natural to an extent, of course, but the game didn't exactly try to keep me in flight mode. In this, I'm not trying to say the game turns into Resident Evil 5 later on - far from that - I'm just saying that the game doesn't seem to stay true to itself at times.
The idea of a Resident Evil game set aboard an abandoned cruise ship immediately drew me in. It lived up to my expectations, though I wasn't actually there enough. (more on that later) Travelling from the bunks and grand halls to the lower levels was very cool, in my opinion. If you know me, you know I love pipes and gears and all manners of mechanical things in games. The characters are much more of a mixed bag, however. Jill Valentine (someone I still have yet to have the full story of until I play the originals) is the main character, and she's fortunately pretty good. She's stern and dedicated, but knows how to cut up when the time comes to it. Chris Redfield is one I know a little more about, and he's the same old Jill-obsessed macho man, not that that's a bad thing. I found it pretty endearing in this game, as a matter of fact. Parker is probably my favorite, providing some kindness and levity to the situation. Not sure how I feel about fakeout deaths, though. Jessica was one I was less fond of. Her annoying attitude felt like her only trait for a time. I suppose she was good at playing her part as a spy, though. Quint and Keith immediately set me off, though, much worse than Jessica. Little more than the millennial stereotype of the time. I fear, though, in the end I saw their purposes in the story and maybe began to care for them just a little. O'Brian and Morgan's leadership roles are the most confusing, but we'll get to that. Raymond was also a mysterious one, but I think I liked him in the end. Overall, the ensemble may have its holes, but you can't say it's not memorable.
Now, before I run out of characters to type, on to the biggest problem of the game for me: the pacing. First off, the chapters are incredibly short. Most last 20 minutes at most, with some lasting as little as 3 minutes total. I'm certain this was to make up for the 3DS's portability, but even in that case I think it's a little extreme. On top of this, many of the chapters take place in areas outside of the Queen Zenobia, totally breaking any immersion or fear factor that may have built up during your time on it, leading back to my issue with the gameplay from earlier. It's also just far too much lore to fit into 5 hours. I mean, isn't it crazy I can write this much about a 5-hour game? I just think the characters and story deserved more time to breathe. On that story, I really liked it, even if it isn't told the greatest. I was left with lots of things unclear, particularly to do with who did what and why. Perhaps this will be cleared up on subsequent replays, but it's still an issue nonetheless.
Resident Evil Revelations is a frustrating game in some ways gameplay and story-wise, but I came out the end fairly happy.

Gameplay is walking from point A to point B to watch a cutscene, occasionally broken apart by a harder enemy or simple puzzle. Story and dialogue is dumb action movie garbage. Atmosphere nearly doesn't exist with only a few very small moments that shine. I can't believe I once thought this game was great. Really goes to show how deep in the gutter this franchise was between 4 & 7.Updated 3 Months Ago

Resident Evil Revelations is an okay game. It does everything a resident evil game usually does, just not as well. It tries to be scary but it's just as scary as the more action heavy games in the series. The graphics aren’t great, but it’s forgivable considering it had a lower budget. There was one section of the game where you get stuck in an area full of enemies and it is actually a bit challenging. The final boss was also challenging. These two parts I would say are the highlights of an otherwise just okay game. I played the raid mode quite a bit, and I think it’s adds quite a bit of value to the game. Overall, revelations is an average game and I only recommend it if you are a die-hard resident evil fan.Updated 6 Months Ago

It may be because I was so blessed with having played the RE2, and RE4 remakes (and even the OG RE4) before this game, but it feels like a watered down (no pun intended) somewhat lifeless Resident Evil.Yes, the gun play is pretty fun and I enjoy playing as multiple characters, but everything about Revelations feels like a the Great Value version of the other games.
Nothing about it feels challenging or skillful, more frustrating due to the vast amount of enemies or health they have. The dodge mechanic is broken. The map and textures are limited. The graphics look bad for Xbox One even…
Just not the best outing for RE. There are good moments and the story isn’t bad, but this just didn’t feel like something born out of my favorite franchise.

It was ok, but it really wasn't anything special. Almost nothing in the game was particularly interesting besides the scanning which even then, that got a little old by the halfway point and I did like that the game takes place on a ship and found that unique. Everything else though tries so hard to be two different games, there's back tracking and scary moments that makes it seem a little more like classic Resident Evil, but there are so many chapters where the game puts you into these non stop shootout segments that just strip away any atmosphere the game had. It also didn't help that the characters never stopped talking which I hate in a horror game because it just pulls me out of it.
The enemies are very spongy but that's ok because that how they were in the classic games and it lent to that old school Resident Evil feel. I also thought at least the first couple of bosses were really well done but others felt very uninspired and by the numbers especially the turret sections.
Overall it's not a terrible game but it still has a bad case of identity crisis that makes it very awkward and hard to fully enjoy.

This is definitely a good Resident Evil. It has some horror aspects, a great location and in my first playthrough I were really excited when discovering a new bossfight. However with every playthrough the parts between the main story get worse.
It just breaks the atmosphere that has been built up to this point, just for cheap linear action gameplay.
Sadly these parts are fairly common in this game, making the game less replayable.
I guess this is a good game to get started with Resident Evil, at least it was a good start for me and on steam sale you can get it for around 7€, so if you're not sure if you want to play it just go for it on sale.

RE Revalations is a good 3rd person style RE game. It's not a masterpiece or a must play (unless you own a 3DS) but simply a good Resident Evil game from an era where the quality of Resident Evil games was questionable. Resident Evil 4 was a masterpiece and a game that everyone should experience at least once. After Resident Evil 4, the mainline games started to go downhill in many fans eyes until RE7 changed the formula. This game came out the same year that many fans were complaining about RE6 straying far from the series survival horror roots. While this RE6 drama was going on, Capcom also released this game on 3DS which captured the Resident Evil feel and assured some fans that there was still hope for the franchise. This game makes an interesting choice where we play the campaign through multiple characters' perspectives at different times. This and the games choice of setting being a ship were some unique points but overall not much about this game really stands out. The setting being just a ship rather than a larger area reminds me of RE1 being confined to one large building the whole game. Resident Evil Revalations is just a solid RE game for fans who like the RE4 style gameplay or 3DS owners who want an M rated game. I would strongly recommend this game to fans of the series but you wouldn't be missing out on much if you did happen to skip this game. That may sound like a negative but isn't that what a spin off like this should be?

RE Revelations is an entertaining but very disposable game. It attempts to combine the action-focus of RE 4-6 with some survival horror exploration and backtracking. Unfortunately, Revelations underwhelms in both areas. It's a mediocre action game and its survival horror elements are too half-hearted to leave an impact. At the time of its release, I was happy to see RE get back to its roots a little bit but after RE7 fully re-committed to survival horror, Revelations feels like a master of none. As much as RE6 disappoints, it is still a blast to play and clearly better than this.A few things let Revelations down, most notably structure. Jill's journey on the boat is the "survival horror" part of the game and makes up over half of the runtime. This stuff is easily the best part of the game but it constantly shifts focus to have you play as someone else for 10 minutes, usually in far-away settings. These sections are all short, linear, and action-heavy. The weapon boxes and upgrades are not available in these parts, which makes sense in-world but takes away any depth these portions could have. The Terragrigia sections are awesome but the rest of these added nothing to the game for me.
Even in the Jill sections, the depth is pretty limited. There's no inventory management really, you're just limited to 3 guns at a time. The weapon upgrades are nice but rarely require any decision-making and trading out upgrades can be annoying. The level design isn't great either and the ship is just kind of boring compared to most of the series. Enemy design also falters, particularly with its goopy standard enemies. There are several types of them but they all look and feel the same and aren't that scary. The bosses aren't bad and there are a couple stalker-esque enemies but the enemies overall disappoint.
Rev added 2 notable mechanics with its dodge move and scanner, both of which are a miss for me. The dodge is just like RE3's in that it's very unintuitive and you'll generally do it on accident rather than intentionally. This should have been moved to a button for the HD release. It's rarely needed, with the possible exception of its brutal final boss that pushes way too hard. The scanning mechanic is also annoying. It slows the game down too much and feels like padding.
The plot is absolute nonsense, reaching far outside where it should. It wants to be 24 and fails spectacularly. There are countless plot twists that all fail to land, bolstered by awful, unlikeable characters. Even Chris and Jill are pretty unlikeable here. The focus on being a political thriller also really detracts from the horror. This game is very reminiscent of those crappy RE CG movies.
Revelations is just a mixed bag that doesn't really excel at anything. It was impressive at the time, especially on the 3DS, and it was a step in the right direction but history hasn't been kind to it. It's an entertaining enough way to kill a weekend but absolutely skippable unless you're starved for RE content.
