Probably my favourite Metroid game to date. The graphics, sound and control are fantastic, the pacing and scope of the game were near perfect, the environmental storytelling was surprising after beating the original Metroid, the sense of drama... Just everything was great! Apart from shine spark puzzles. They can die. But they are optional, so I don't think it's worth deducting a point for. All in all, a fantastic experience that managed to cram a lot of content into its relatively short time.Updated 1 Week Ago

Wow, what a fun time! I'm not usually a Metroidvania person, but I had a great time with this one. Being a Remake of the original, it's a great way to jump into the series. Having a map as well is extremely helpful to navigate the game's many passageways, although I only found myself stuck a few times. This Remake does an excellent job at making you feel like you don't need a walkthrough. It flows well, it feels good to play, and it's simply excellent overall. I will admit that I'm not a fan of the old-school boss design - call me a zoomer if you want, but I always found the design of making bosses a mere bullet hell in this older titles does not age well. But I can cut it slack for that. It's still a fantastic game.Score: 90

Like this game A LOT, even if it is extremely short. The music and intro/title custcenes set the stage for the whole franchise. Metroid is a game where you quite literally feel stronger as the game goes on, and not artificially like most other games. The exploration is really fun, and as you go on, you get those classic "Oh, now that I have this upgrade I can go that area I saw earlier."
However, the bosses are not up to par with the rest of the game. They have some of the most gorgeous sprites I've ever seen in gaming, but Ridley and Kraid are nothing but missile-spam fests that will easily go down in about 20 seconds of entering their rooms, and Mother Brain is an insufferable rage-fest of bouncing around the screen and trying not to fall in the lava. There are glowing rings that will bounce you around, as well as heat-seeking missiles that will follow you around, as well as the lava that Samus doesn't want to seem to jump out of, as well as the boss itself attacking you. This boss stuck with me throughout the rest of the game just because of how upsetting it was.
I didn't play the original, but the apparently-new Zero Suit section was... good... The chase sequences can be annoying, especially in the "Oh wow, I definitely didn't get seen but whatever" sense. Sometimes the pirates will just not see you, and sometimes they will, it's all up to RNG, except for the spotlight parts, which are really hard to avoid and require perfectly-timed maneuvers.

Solid remake.Good
- the gameplay and visuals are of coursed upgraded, but they also look amazing for GBA hardware. And the controls are crisp and smooth.
- They added new upgrades that are in line with current Metroid games, which is nice.
- The story is expanded. You get a little stealth mission at the end, which is nice.
- the added map and hints on which area to go was nice. I never felt lost.
Bad
- the fake lava was confusing. Never did I think to check if it was fake to access a new area, and I shouldn't have to. I wasn't going to take damage just to check every patch of lava. And having enemies in there didn't mean it wasn't hazardous cause there were enemies that could be in lava.
- Ridley was too easy.

I constantly flip flop between Zero Mission and Super as my favorite Metroid game, but either way, Zero Mission is fantastic. It turns Metroid 1 into an incredibly fun game. The sprites are beautiful, the new remixes are great, the new content added is awesome, even the controls feel great. Samus is a lot weightier in this game so she feels snappy instead of floaty. This is absolutely the best way to experience Metroid 1.Updated 3.5 Months Ago

A short sweet package of peak. MZM fixes a lot of the issues that the original dropped. It doesn't overstay it's welcome, it's art design is exceptional, OST bops, gameplay kicks ass bc it's Metroid of course it kicks ass. Awesome Metroid entry, I'm surprised people don't mention it more often! The movement is snappy and the short length combined with the consistent movement upgrades made for a gratifying game. There was a bit of backtracking but the smooth movement and tight map design never led to long or boring walks back to places you've already visited. Something small but noteworthy is how truly responsive the blaster is, the speed you tap it is essentially the rate it fires, with a reasonable upper bound to keep from blasting your hand off from jitterclicking which is a problem I occasionally have with other games. I'd heard about Mecha Ridley, but seeing him pop out was a genuine surprise, though I wish the fight lasted a bit longer because super missiles deal a ton of damage. Though there weren't many bosses, the ones that were there were worth it.Not talked about enough!

This was the first Metroid game I ever actually finished and after recently replaying Super Metroid, I decided to return to Zero Mission 10 years later, and what did I think of it?It's still a pretty good game but I got some issues with it that prevent it from being great, I never played the original Metroid and it really feels like I should just to have a much better appreciation for ZM but as it stands even without the context of the original Metroid, Zero Mission is easily one of the better game remakes mainly because it doesn't really do what many remakes tend to do and be the same game but with "better graphics".
Right off the bat, what is improved in this game over Super Metroid are the controls, like holy crap, these controls eat SM's controls for breakfast, it actually feels like I can precisely move around for the most part, you can ledge grab, moving between diagonally aiming feels better and this is the biggest difference, using missiles no longer requires you to take your thumb off the D pad, now you can just hold the R button, and the you can just fire missiles that way, this alone to me makes ZM better than SM. I know these controls were introduced in Fusion but it goes to show how much better Fusion's controls were than Super's and it was very smart of Nintendo to use Fusion's controls for this remake.
The music is pretty good, I have soft for the Brinstar theme and the Norfair's music sounds something straight out of the Prime games which is awesome since I love the musical motif of the latter.
Zero Mission isn't as braindead easy as Super either, I have seen some people call ZM the "easy" game but I argue Super is much easier, ZM's moment to moment combat can still feel a little too easy for my tastes but at least in Zero, some enemies are immune to the ice beam, I wish more were but by comparison where 99.9% of the enemies were weak to it, this was a welcome change. In ZM, 95% of enemies are weak to the ice beam as opposed to 99.9%.
The level design in Zero Mission is good about 90% of the time, outside of Kraid, the areas in ZM do a good job at scratching that exploration itch. Energy Tanks are pretty reasonable on where they are hidden while missile upgrades felt a little too easy to find for my tastes. But that metroidvania itch of, "oh man, this area is so hard to traverse, it feels like I can barely get anywhere" then you get more upgrades and unlock more of the map is still here, and probably more refined and better made than the original game. The only issues I have with the exploration and power ups, is that space jump and power bombs you don't get late game, I would've really loved to have power bombs early in the game since this will lead to my first negative:
You will have to morph ball bomb EVERY SINGLE TILE in every room you enter in order for you to have some clue to where to go. Don't let the much derided hint system fool you, there will still be lots of morph ball bombing in order to have some clue on where to go, this is what I mean of having power bombs earlier, this would eventually cut down on the tedium on needing to constantly bomb things. The hint system also doesn't do much to make things easier to look around due to the aforementioned issues. It straight up lies to you it says you need to go to Norfair but you actually need to go to Crateria to unlock ledge grab to progress furthur.
Kraid is also a very badly designed level, it's easy to be bottlenecked borderline have the feeling you are getting softlocked at times due to immense bottlenecking.
Then there is also the fact that there are some parts of Norfair where it's establish that lava flames hurts Samus, so I decided not to go there just to avoid getting damaged just to find out that YOU DO need to go under that fire to progress. Was this to promote strategy guide sales in 2004?
The next two issues are interconnected but the Mother Brain boss is awful and the stealth section after is awful.
Mother Brain boss is bad because it not only has the floor that hurts you, but you need to deal with multiple bullet hell projecticles while also dodging MB's energy attack while standing on the two platforms to make eye contant with her just to hit her with your missiles. It has you doing at least 3-5 things at once and it felt like the fire floor was there just to make it hard for the sake of it.
The stealth section can't decide if it wants to be a that or a scripted set piece I say this because there are moments where need to avoid sightlines, but then you will HAVE to get caught and get chased. It makes this section really frustrating which is a shame since once you get the armour back, it can feel liberating all those pirates you were hiding from, the section preceding this could've been much better handled.
Overall, Metroid ZM is a very good remake but at the same time, I got a lot of issues with it. I still say Dread and Prime 1 are better but you could do worse regarding first Metroid games.

Metroid: Zero Mission is an enjoyable remake of a terrible game. The original Metroid has not aged well and even back then it was an incredibly difficult game that require alot of time and practice to understand the system. Metroid: Zero Mission improves nearly everything about the original in every way possible, better map design, better combat, better upgrades, having a viewable map, added a whole new zone of content with a new boss aswell and much more.
The game roughly takes about 4-6 Hours to obtain all collectables with a guide, however without a guide, some of the collectables will be very difficult to find without attacking nearly every wall or jumping on certain walls, some collectables require some very advance platforming skill that is quite punishing for a failure leading to a massive waste of time.
Overall i quite enjoyed spending a couple of days playing this, great content to play while listening to a Podcast or YouTube video in the background, I'd highly suggest watching someone like the Geek Critique on his Metroid series as that was what i enjoyed through my adventure.
Looking to enjoy Metroid from the start? this is the definitive game to start the series!

What an absolute joy to play. Pure fun Metroid. If you’re new to the Metroid series and are a bit put off from the NES version, I’d highly recommend giving this a try. This game was fantastic. Starting out, the game gives a great first impression, people were right about this being one of the easiest games in the series. I mean, I've only played Super Metroid about a month ago and I've attempted the original Metroid in the past and failed due to it's painful difficulty, but this game at the start SCREAMED easy. I do find this a good thing since the point of the game was to be a portable remake of Metroid. At the beginning, you follow a rather linear path that after not long will lead you to these ancient healing statues (I actually don't know the names of these). Upon turning into the morph ball with the item you retrieved at the beginning of the game, and placing yourself in the statues outstretched hands, the statue will heal you and replenish your ammunition. Your map will then be automatically opened to direct you to the area that you need to go to next; which shows fans that this game is going to be much more linear than previous entries. This hand-holding continues throughout a lot of the game; where you need to explore the areas you are in and find a way to get to the the map marker, which is usually just another statue ready to direct you to the next marker on the map.
The exploration, while not as enjoyable and atmospheric as Super Metroid, is still very enjoyable. However, One of the main problems I have only pops up 3-5 times throughout the game, yet it's still frustrating enough for me to lower the overall rating. It's that thing everyone hates; when they get completely stuck trying to figure out what to do for ages, only to finally give in to looking up a guide. Than when seeing how they were supposed to solve the problem, they think "How in the living heck was I supposed to think of that!", Than they feel disappointed they even had to use a guide in the first place. These things don't pop up as much as in Super Metroid, since Zero Mission is so much shorter of a game, however, in Super Metroid, I tended to be more forgiving of this, since when I finally figured it out, I would realise It was kind-of my fault, since the game had been screaming environmental cues in my face, yet I was dumb enough not to notice them.
In Zero Mission, environmental cues seem to be everywhere in the places where the way forward is otherwise obvious, yet not in the places where they are needed the most. So you're left shooting and blasting every single wall, in every single way you can think of, until you actually have to search it up on the Internet, just to progress in the game. Other than that, The game was absolutely fantastic.
Now moving forward, I will be going into spoiler territory, including one spoiler for Super Metroid. So if you've not played the game yet, I suggest you stop reading here.
The final boss, Mother Brain was... painful to beat for me. The battle worked basically the same as in Super Metroid, where the main danger was being knocked around by all the projectiles being thrown at you. It took me at least 5 attempts to finally beat her, because in Zero Mission, there are so many damn projectiles, that every time I tried getting back up onto the platform to shoot her eye, I would instantly, right before landing on the platform, be knocked straight back down. So essentially the entire process for me was:
Jump up, fall down, jump up, fall down, jump up, get 1 or 2 shots in if I'm lucky, fall down, repeat, repeat, repeat. This is why the boss was so annoying to me.
Than the self destruct emergency timer started and I had to run to the surface and into to my ship as quickly as I possible. When I finally got to my ship, the ending cutscene of the game played.
But that wasn't the end because a group of space Pirates shot Samus back down, and she crash-landed back on the planet, destroying her suit upon landing. This was the major plot-twist that suddenly turned the game into a stealth game where you are extremely vulnerable. The plot-twist wasn't near as effective to me, since I already knew that this happened (although, I thought it was supposed to happen in Metroid: Fusion, not Zero Mission)
This stealth section of the game gave a very good first impression. Being chased by space pirates was a nerve racking change of pace that surprised me, because I expected that I wouldn't experience any chasing until the release of Metroid Dread. The good first impression didn't last long however, because hiding and remaining undetected became overly difficult and inconsistent (I was frustrated at the time with something unrelated to the game, so it may not be as bad as I'm making it out to be).
But I forgave the developers, because after the next boss, I was given the Gravity Suit, and some awesome music kicked in, it made me feel bad ass and let me tear through the space pirates who dared chase me before-hand.
Unfortunately, I've reached the character limit, so I have to cut short here. I enjoyed the remaining minutes of the game and final boss. 8.5

O back tracking é pouco.
Pontos fortes
Jogabilidade fluida
Muita coisa pra fazer
Sem enrolação
Animações entre as fases ajudam a entender a história
Parte final interessante
Ponto fraco
Som do jogo é sofrido

makes those silly and underwhelming boss fights into real big events, takes all the best elements from super and fusion to turn the original into... a good game. a great one, even. the epilogue-ish thing is pretty cool, sneaking around as zero suit samus, before you get your suit back (with extra powers from super metroid!!) and kick some huge ass, before fighting mecha ridley. if you want, though, you can go back and look for more secrets, which is definitely rewarding at first, getting all that stuff you couldn't before, but eventually it kinda starts to get tedious. for a more triumphant ending, i'd recommend you don't spend too long in this part of the game.Updated 9.5 Months Ago

Very fun game. It's my first ever Metroidvania so part of this review might also be me judging the genre, but that can't really be avoided can it.
I enjoyed a lot of the progression and the natural sense of exploration - I liked how the game would show you something you can't reach shortly before getting a new ability, which would naturally pique your interest and teach you how to use the ability.
I enjoyed the different zones with their unique aesthetics, too.
I loved finding shortcuts and trying to figure out the fastest path towards my objective.
What I didn't like nearly as much, was the last couple of hours. The game becomes significantly more linear, which is a shame. And while I enjoyed the survival horror section where you play without your powerups, it was a bit too difficult in my opinion. I also absolutely hated the Mother Brain boss fight, which was quite clearly designed by an absolute sadist and almost made me throw my console against the wall.
All in all, a very fun experience. Not a "must play" title for everyone, like some classics, but a "highly recommended" one.

Without a doubt, this is the definitive way to experience the first Metroid game. The game plays well, sounds phenomenal, and has the best pacing I've seen in a Metroid game yet. Nearly all the bullshit from the first game is gone and there's even more here than what was present in the NES original. The only things holding this one back is a lack of difficulty. I think I died twice in the whole game, and I went into this blind. Some of the bosses felt pathetically easy. This in-particular applies to Ridley as I think I beat him in about 15 seconds. Also, while the added cutscenes were nice, they did end up confusing me on Ridley's place in the narrative. Like why is he integral to Planet Zebes if he and the Space Pirates follow Samus to it after she's already arrived? Also, the Mother Brain fight can fuck right off. I know it's unfair and boring in the NES original, but its design felt so out of place after playing through the streamlined experience of the rest of Zero Mission. Lastly, while the Spinespark was fun to use once figured out, it was incredibly difficult to figure out the mechanics of without consulting a guide. Also the Super Missile in Brinstar was a pain in the ass.
Despite all that, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone interested in trying out the Metroid series but are unsure on where to start. I feel Zero mission, regardless of how to play it, is a great time.

It was so frustrating to beat mother brain. It took me many tries to do so and then when the epilogue began I was not ready for it, I thought the game would end after Mother Brain. Mecha Ridley was tough, but the final two guards before the exit were literally the worst. Overall, I really enjoyed the game and I think that it is a great way to start the Metroid series. The game is really well made and engaging, and would be up to a 9 if area travel was easier (especially in Norfair and Chozodia), the Space Pirates didn’t regenerate, and the game acknowledged map completion / item percentage. Most items were fine but 100% was a pain (would have been awful solo). The game struggled to balance linearity and non-linearity; planning/routing on the player’s part is necessary for an optimal experience.[Only after getting the power bombs, I used maps, video tutorials and a few restore points to 100%. Everything before that could have been done completely solo and on a cartridge.]
File management is a big flaw. New Game+ features (timer / item count) should be options available from the start. “Time Attack” should be part of every file, not a separate mode. The game’s nonlinearity is appreciated but 100% is evidently not meant for a first playthrough and, in my opinion, shinesparking should only be used for sequence breaking shortcuts and not obscure items as the game is near-impossible to complete without a guide, even with the item counter, and the game never teaches shinesparking. (Perhaps the full map should be unlocked by returning to map rooms with the power bombs to make the endgame smoother.)
