DA2 is a pretty fun game; the combat gameplay feels nice, and the writing of the companions is pretty good.

There are some not-so-good aspects, like the very repetitive dungeons, and some inconsistency with the writing from a mage pov.

Regardless, it is still a very enjoyable experience.

For this playthrough, I went with a mage Hawke that romanced Merrill and (naturally) sided with the mages at the end.

Decent game
Probably the weakest of the 3, but still worthwhile

I should probably give this game a lower score. What they tried to execute in this game was really interesting but the execution itself was pretty poor. I love the mage and Templar conflict. It's very interesting. However, most of the quests leading up to the climax involving that conflict did not seem t respond very well to your decisions. Yes you get "points" towards each side based off your decisions but the situation doesn't respond to your little decisions leading up to the final ones for each quest. For example, I chose to side with the mages at the beginning of a quest and yet these stupid mages were attacking me on the way to the final confrontation for that quest. It really didn't make a ton of sense. A lot of the quests felt this way.

I also didn't care for the companions nearly as much. Fenris was interesting but I would have loved to see him waver more on his anti-mage sentiment especially since I was a mage and gained his respect but oh well. Aveline was great and so was Varric. Everyone else was pretty meh even if they had some interesting moments. I did like how there is a lot of extra dialogue and banter depending on your party setup and who you bring with you on quests. The friendship vs rivalry thing was pretty great and the fact you can lose party members depending on your decisions was pretty interesting too.

The further explanation on the Qunari was pretty cool. The actual quests involving the Qunari and their invasion was pretty under baked. Either the reasons given for their invasion was poor or it wasn't explained very well. Didn't care for that story as much as the mage vs. Templar one. I did really enjoy the quests involving hunting the serial killer though. That was some of the best of the game. That and the Legacy DLC as well.

Then there's the climax. I never fully understood why the mage killed that important person. Now I do and it actually makes a ton of sense. It's interesting that they took away the compromise option so that it forces you to choose a side in the final conflict. I wish there was still some doubt in the final conflict though. Like mages who see other mages get completely lost in demonic possession killing other mages that it makes them doubt. And same on the Templar side. You can still force to side with one faction but at least make it a bit believable. Some doubt would be there. Other than that the final confrontation was pretty well done and intriguing. It was much better than all the quests in the rest of the game leading up to it. It just made quite a bit of sense.

And there's even more flaws. The day/night cycle for each act and recycling of location assets made sense because the game was rushed but it's definitely off-putting after a while. The side quests were not very good except for the ones that involved cameos of Dragon Age: Origins characters. The companion quests were good though. Except Merrill's. It's a very tragic one and it pisses me off.

Knowing what happens in Inquisition makes me appreciate DA2 a fair bit more. It's very flawed but it's very interesting in concept that I can more easily overlook those flaws. I should score it lower but I can't because I like it too much.

7.5/10 would spend 8 in-game years with a gang of bisexual criminals again (it's a 7.5/10 in my mind but it's an 8.8/10 in my heart) - although people should keep in mind there are some necessary mods

The game has a better combat system with really flashy animations but lacks on the storytelling and choice/consequence part compared to the previosly dragon age.
