Colombia might be the most beautiful world I've experienced in gaming. Combat is worse than 2, but the atmospheric surprise you got from the original is there unlike 2. While initially bland, Booker gets progressively better as the story unfolds. The dynamic between Elizabeth and Booker is what makes the story, as you progress you can't help but like Elizabeth more and more. From her helping you with the little things, like giving you ammo or money. To having her ideology's impact your thought process. You really can't help but want to protect her/save her. The multiversal plot is great, I loved the idea of the MC being the antagonist.

As the third installment of the Bioshock series, Bioshock Infinite is tasked with wrapping up the series in a way befitting its predecessors. Set in 1912, the plot revolves around a hard-boiled private eye named Booker DeWitt, who must retrieve "the girl" to repay a debt. Complicating matters is the fact that "the girl" is being held captive in a Christian revivalist and American-jingoist city suspended in the air. The game took me approximately 12 hours of play time to finish.

Let's begin by discussing the strong points. Like the other Bioshock games, the obvious stand-out element to Infinite is the fantastic art design. Large amounts of research clearly went into this project, as the clothing, decor, music, architecture, and alternate history of the world (as well as all-too-uncomfortable true portions of American history) are all fantastically realized. The soundtrack is utterly fantastic. Navigating through the first hour or two of the game - before any fighting begins - is a true joy.

When combat finally does come into play, it's very well-done and enjoyable. Companions are helpful by throwing you extra money, health, mana, and ammunition - usually exactly what you need at any given time - or by pointing out things of interest. This means that while the battles are hard, seldom will they slow the player down for huge amounts of time. Death is fairly rare, and when it does occur they get you back into the action very quickly, which is a nice plus.

The plot is intriguing and certainly thought-provoking, though some will find it more of a masterpiece than others. I felt that it was executed adequately, though it left some unfortunate loose ends that I wish it had resolved. A certain "false reveal" near the end left a bad taste in my mouth. But the story is competent and enjoyable, and certainly a worthy reason to go romping through a spectacularly realized world. Far more important, however, is the way in which the game forces one to reflect on the nature of political and religious extremism.

As with other Bioshock games, the cohesion is strongest at the beginning, but begins to fall apart near the middle of the game when running here and there for various fire-fights becomes the order of the day. Things wrap up near the end slightly more tightly, but the direction they decided to take the game prevents the conclusion from feeling very satisfying. I definitely believe that the first 3 to 5 hours of the game are the strongest - finding your bearings in a fantastic new world and developing Booker's relationship with a major side character are incredibly rewarding.

The game is not without weaknesses.

- It includes a magic system that ends up being thematically out of place within the game - simply because players expect it in Bioshock.

-Voxophones carry on Bioshock's standard method of granting you diaries of crucial characters, though their placement tends to be wherever it's helpful to dole out backstory, not necessarily where it would make sense in-world.

- The lock-picking system feels arbitrary and unrewarding - you might not have enough lock picks to crack a difficult safe, but whenever there's a plot-related lock you always seem to have enough picks.

- Important plot-reveal scenes near the end of the game are weakened and broken up by ever more intense fights.

- The final battle is weak, both mechanically and in terms of plot-relevance.

- I personally didn't find the massive number of weapons available to be a plus (you can only carry two at a time), but I suppose not everyone wants to play through the whole game with only a carbine and shotgun like I did.

Ultimately, Infinite is a thought-provoking game with strong production values, and is absolutely a must-play. It will without a doubt land in my top 3 games for 2013, and may even take the top spot. It's not a perfect game, but definitely one I couldn't put down.

Any attempt delivered after the ground-breaking BioShock 1 and, to a lesser degree, BioShock 2, was going to be a big ask. Irrational Games have taken a big leap here, leaving behind the underwater city of Rapture and creating a whole new gaming universe up in the sky.

Before its release, there were some noises from players who wanted a new experience in the old setting of Rupture. In a way, what was delivered was an old experience in a new setting. Game mechanics are very similar to the previous BioShock games, but refined: your powers and traditional weapons feel more natrual. The ability to draw on tears in the world fabric and pull on elements from parallel universes added an element of strategy to your fights, and the girl you are saving also acts as an active and realistic NPC, and not just like some sidekick for the ride.

The city of Columbia felt almost as unique as Rupture. Towering districts bobbing like islands in the sky, with a monorail connecting between them. The idealistic scenary is punctuated by a pastel colour palette, people picnicking in the park, and idle conversation of simpler times.

Of course, Irrational Games were always great storytellers, and they did not disappoint here. The ideal atmosphere is broken again and again with the revelation of a society pluaged with racism, forced labour, and inequility.

The played character in this game is Booker Dewit, who arrives in the floating city to retrieve a girl called Elizibath, kept captive there. He does this to get rid of a debt, and his relationship with Elizebeth gets bumpy like the monorail system connecting the areas of the city.

From the moment the game started, I looked for the story twist that always appears with any Bioshock entry but still failed to predict the ending. The story can be a bit challenging to follow, but it’s conclusion is very satisfying.

The first-person shooting mechanics in this entry are very good, but at some point feel a bit repetetive, with every new area becoming a battle arena in which you have to defeat a horde of enemies before being able to proceed.

Voice acting is fantasic, the music selection exquisite, and it has a 1920’s vibe to it. The verious environments are a beautiful combination of new futuristic technology with early 1900’s architecture and flair—an absolute mastery of level design.

As far as comparing this to other entries, in my eyes, Bioshock 1 is still the masterpiece and remains untoppled. Still, I enjoyed this better than BioShock 2, and I understand why many consider this one of the best FPS ever made. Recommanded.

This game diverges significantly from its prequels, which are true masterpieces. It feels more like a straightforward shooter with a few special abilities, lacking the rich atmosphere that characterized earlier titles. After playing for about six hours, I couldn’t invest any more time; it simply didn’t offer much. It's disappointing to see the franchise conclude with such a mediocre entry.

Seeing the game the first time, I was a bit sceptical. Bioshock not playing in Rapture? Seems not quite right. But oh dear, how wrong I was. By far the best entry into the series, really worth playing it. The whole athmosphere of the game is just perfect and keeps you going and engaging. I played through the game in one sitting, which is quite unusual. I could not stop, it is like a movie to play along.

The only thing that keeps the game from a perfect score are the endless arena fights. You get into the arena, you know it is an arena. You know you will have to fight off a horde. Unlike Bioshock 2, you feel really powerful though and most abilites are fun to use and make the game way more enjoyable. Only thing a bit annoying is the rather strict ammo constriction, but you can get around that by picking up guns and using Vigors.

The Burial at Sea DLC just feels like a really worthy epilogue to Bioshock 1, a much more worthy finale than Bioshock 2 if you ask me. Just really brings the entire story together as a whole, connecting Bioshock 1 and Infinite.

Give it a try, it is so worth it!

This review only covers the main game. I'll log the DLCs separately. Spoiler warning. Gonna mention the ending of the game.

This game was the one I was the most curious about since I heard it connects to the first game somehow. Throughout the game I kept thinking "Why are these called Vigors now? And EVE is now Salt... Surely this has to lead somewhere with all the similarities." And yeah, it did lead somewhere. Fucking parallel universes, if I understood the lighthouse sequence correctly.

The twist was bad. Undeniably bad. I would love to hear the comments of people who like it. Especially since time/space traveling is open to a whole can of plot holes. Maybe I'm just too dumb for this. Maybe I have to play the DLC first. But I felt it was lame. The reveal of Elizabeth's and the people on the boat's identities was nice.

When we suddenly ended up in Rapture I thought the plot was gonna end of a high note, especially since from the start I thought Elizabeth looked A LOT like Little Sisters and how her and Songbird's connection reminded of Big Daddies. Again, might be explained in the DLC. I'm here about the main game.

Gameplay wise, it felt like a generic FPS. Five of the eight vigors are used for STUNNING enemies. Like I'd just use the crows or the electric one and kill them right away. Damage vigors are mostly useless, only really used them for the vigor combination & use all eight vigors achievement. I especially don't see the usage of the "block bullets and send 'em back" vigor. Maybe they're more useful in higher difficulties, as I played the game on Normal mode.

Overall, I liked Bioshock 2 much more than this entry. I liked Booker and Elizabeth's chatter and their interactions but that alone doesn't save the game in my eyes. So my current list goes 2 > 1 > Infinite, to my disappointment.

I can't express how many times I've replayed this game, prob put in over 100 hours in all playthroughs I've done of this game over the years. Everything about it is exceptional to me. While I believe this is the worst of the 3 Bioshock games, it is not a bad game at all, its fantastic. The plot wavers a bit in the middle, fuck fighting Lady Comstock, my god I hate that part, why am I back at the factory for the third time, then all the sudden my mind is fucked, wait I'm Comstock?! Gameplay wise, it's also a step down from the previous entry, the two weapon system is inferior to the weapon wheel available in the other two, Undertow is beyond broken, so much so that the other plasmids feel useless. Handymen are a lot more annoying to fight than Big Daddies, Firemen are worse than Spider Splicers, enemy variety is worse than the other entries. Still overall a great game.

One of the best intros in the game ever. The initial "hallelujah" after bursting to the Sky City gives me goosebumps everytime. Section with traveling to Columbia getting know to the city and then discover the true side of the people living there was one of a time experience. The best shooting/fighting mechanics throughout the series, but still sometimes a little bit clunky. Great plot with many not-so-obvious twists makes this game the best of the whole trilogy.

BioShock Infinite is a game I wanted to play for a long time now, despite not having played the previous games in the series.
I got into the game with high expectations, and I gotta say, it managed to surprise me.
First of all, the story is quite mind-blowing; it's actually a bit too convoluted and slow at times, but everything makes sense towards the end, and the ending in particular is one of my favorite parts of the game. All in all, BioShock Infinite's story is both complicated and impressive, as well as inconsistent.
The highlight of the game in my opinion, however, is the representation and world building; they're amazing.
The characters are good too, especially the main characters and particularly Elizabeth.
Also, the visuals hold up well because of the art style and the music is very charming.
The gameplay isn't on par with the rest of the game unfortunately because it feels a bit clunky and I didn't like being limited to use only 2 weapons at a time, but it's still enjoyable nonetheless with a nice amount of different weapons, abilities and upgrades.
As for the DLC, I didn't feel motivated to play it yet but I've heard it's quite decent.

Pros:
+ Compelling narrative
+ Excellent representation & world building
+ Engaging characters
+ Great music
+ Fun gameplay

Cons:
- The combat system feels slightly clunky
- 2 weapon limit

Narrative: 7/10
Gameplay: 6/10
Characters: 7/10
Music: 7/10
Graphics/Audio: ?/10

Final Rating: 7.5/10
- Very Good -
With an intriguing narrative and spectacular world building, BioShock Infinite is a videogame experience that soars high even to this day, despite showing its age in some areas.

Do I recommend it?:
Yes because it holds up very well.

I'd like to give it a 6.5 if I could. I have. Alot of feelings about this game. It's not great. It's emotionally shallow and manipulate. Yet it still got me. Again.
Like when I played it the first time.

I have nothing against timeline hopping or changing them therein. But you can't end your game on a grandfather paradox (which I think is explained maybe in the Burial at sea
DLC I've yet to playthrough)
Cuz it just doesn't work. I understand the idea behind it: telling this compelling narrative within a kind of time loop/closed circuit, but the more you think about it the more it contradicts itself

I guess I relate this feeling to how kingdom hearts has so many adoring fans. (This isn't inherently a bad thing) This game derives its "meaning" through emotional logic, instead of grounded through actual logic. And again that's not inherently a bad thing, but you need to have both in balance for something to really have meaning for me. The thematic elements of this are muddled and unclear. The most I can glean, while I still go through the credits is "taking personal responsibility for your actions" and that time jumping can create issues??
I don't know, it's a good shooter though lol. Definitely not an IMSIM.
I'm glad I went through it again, but Jesus christ it's the worst of all the shock games. Great, unique, ideas, but like, they're all stitched together I an almost haphazard way. This game is absolutely wasted potential.

God I have so many tiny gripes.
Like why the fuck arnt the audiologs subtitled? And WHY can't I make the subtitled text LARGER so I can read it properly? I had to squint to play this game on my 60" flat screen. Why can I only hold 2 guns? Where is the narrative justification for vigors? Is it there and I just missed it, but did fink just use Jesus faith to make magical juices? And how did they not affect society in a negative way?
There's so many things that just irk me.

but the part of going through Comstock house to get Elizabeth back sent adrenaline through my system, even though it didn't even really end up mattering? Why did the Vox start attacking me? Cuz I was an 'imposter' who killed their leader? How contrived.
And that FUCKING stinger after the credits, when booker hears his daughter in his old place and is like "anna"? DOESNT WORK. The ENTIRE point of the ending is that booker had to be killed when he made his choice. So how the fuck could he still be alive? This completely undoes your own ending! Maybe this is justificationfor Burial at sea. I don't know I'll see

There's so much of this game that just doesn't make sense the more you think about it. Cuz it's bot supposed to be thought about. It's supposed to be felt.
I'm sorry but I need both. I'm ok with the emotions, but you need to have solid groundwork to make it make sense.
Gaaah. Whatever.
Unique experience for me though: I played this while listening to my own music, and the song "castles in the air" by Arcitects came on during the ending. It ended right as the camera faded out and credits rolled. THAT was beautiful and perfect and totally random. But man. Fuck this game. It's a great shooter. But a jumbled mess of a story that had some beautiful moments that don't make sense the more you think about it.

It is a mystery to me how this game initially attained the reputation of a masterpiece. Bioshock Infinite is a game that seems to be confused about its own stance and message.
At first, it starts as a somewhat simplistic representation of 1800s America with its slavery and racial segregation. There is a leader akin to a god and a cult dedicated to John Wilkes Booth. Honestly, at this point, the game is somewhat tasteless in its themes and presentation of the subject matter.
However, things get even worse once the game moves to a parallel timeline, where the underclass of slaves starts a rebellion, and the game becomes a "both sides bad" narrative, where the other side is ultra-religious, racist, and sexist slave owners, and the other is slaves. Additionally, the leader of the slaves becomes an idiot who wants to murder everyone from the other side and refuses to work together with the main characters, despite the clear benefits that would bring. Eventually, she ends up threatening a child and gets killed by Elisabeth. The definition of character assassination.
The ending of the game is even more of a mess with its multi-dimension reality with the main character being the main villain from another timeline and everything being solved by killing him in one timeline, erasing every other version (even though it makes no sense and doesn't work as seen in the DLC).
So the story of the game is a complete trainwreck and it butchers practically every theme it touches on. However, there are some good elements here as well. The character of Elisabeth is genuinely endearing, and she truly feels helpful due to her at the time quite advanced AI. The gunplay is also alright, and the powers are fun, though there isn't really a reason to swap between them often.
Overall, while as a game Bioshock Infinite is perfectly competent, the completely idiotic handling of the game's themes just leaves me annoyed and frustrated, as well as questioning how was ever considered a masterpiece, or even better than the original games.

You're not in Rapture anymore, Dorothy! Instead, you play as Booker DeWitt on mission to rescue Elizabeth from Columbia, a city in the clouds. In contrast to the dark and somewhat scary environments of Rapture, most of Columbia feels light and airy, with amazing early 20th century-inspired architecture and characters. Booker and Elizabeth are a memorable duo that have some great interactions as they escape the city together.

Vigors replace Plasmids as the way to gain powers to help you on your quest, but the idea is pretty much the same. Vigors, used in combination with your arsenal of weapons, provide varied and interesting ways of dealing with your enemies. As you progress through the game you will find Voxophones, audio logs that provide more of the back story of the city and the people that created it.

But if I were going to judge it as just another entry in the Bioshock franchise instead of the never-ending spectacle it's advertised as, I'd have to say: I like it. As a huge fan of the original Bioshock and its watery city-prison, Rapture, I wasn't sure what to think of Infinite's city-in-the-sky, Columbia. Luckily, the devs knew exactly what they were doing and knocked it out of the park with another fantastic game and city.

Graphically, you wouldn't know this was a Bioshock game if you're a seasoned veteran. In contrast to the dank, wet, spooky-looking halls of Rapture, Columbia boasts colorful and bright environments, outlined by a fresh and expressive skyline! (Feels like I'm writing an ad for an AirBNB, but I digress) It really is a 180 from the prior games' art direction, but I'm here for it. I think the bright and cheery aesthetic does really well as a dichotomy to the depressing and dark tone of the plot. Like yeah, you're basically running around Disneyland, but you're doing so in order to save a woman who's been kidnapped and locked away her whole life just so you can sell her to wipe away your debt. (Which is basically just Rapunzel, which is also Disney, so... maybe i don't have a point here)

Now you *might* realize you're playing Bioshock the second you're in a fight, because it plays exactly like Bioshock 2 with the plasmid/gunplay on either hand, albeit maybe a bit more polished. I know Infinite gets a lot of flak for only allowing you to carry two weapons at a time, but I actually liked this as it felt like in past games, I was given ammo of any random type, (likely to encourage using everything), whereas here it felt like it tended to favor the weapons I had holstered. I prefer this because, while I'll give any weapon a shot or two, I've got my favorites and if I want to go through the game with only a couple of weapons then goddamnit I'm going through the game with only a couple of weapons! Vigors, of course, are the exact same thing as plasmids so... y'know, they do what they say on the box; you get powers and all that jazz.

One crazy cool thing I really liked was the inclusion of Elizabeth. From the second you get her to join your party, you're probably thinking, "Dang, escort quest? Lame." But that's not the case at all. Throughout your travels, she'll call out points of interest, throw you ammo, money, or salts, (vigor replenishment), and doesn't have an HP bar of any sort for you to micromanage, she just seems to duck and weave around cover to stay out of the fray. I thought this was a clever way to get me to take on a weaker companion without making them have to try and fight or burden me with the task of keeping them alive.

I really enjoyed Infinite's story, I was curious about the Lutece twins you encounter frequently throughout the game, pondering what meaning their choices had, I liked meeting and working with Elizabeth, figuring out her backstory and wondering how our story together would unfold, and I enjoyed the conflict between the Vox Populi, (a resistance group), and Comstock. As you go through the story, you'll also encounter characters from Booker's past, and it starts to make more and more sense why he's ended up in this debt and why he needs to go to these extreme lengths to clear it.

Let me clarify- this isn't a perfect game by any means, (despite the 5/5 I've given it), but it's solid; it's a good game in its own right even without the Bioshock moniker. It's engaging in both story and gameplay, and the freedom you're given in terms of vigor/weaponry is super high, so any of the enemies are at the mercy of whatever method of disposal you choose. You don't have to be a Bioshock fan to play this, but I think any Bioshock fan would enjoy it, and who knows? Infinite could be a great introduction to what's become a great series.
