Better than I originally remember. Better mechanics than 1, but Sofia Lamb doesn’t interest me as much as Andrew Ryan. Having already experienced Rapture takes away from the atmosphere hype you get from the first. I would've loved to have more information on the main character, and his days before getting caught. Outside of Eleanor being attached to you, I never got the feel of attachment the game tried to establish.Updated 4.5 Hours Ago

My first time playing this and it's a solid game. I will have to replay for the plat and dlcs so this review is just for the main campaign.Game feels very similar to Bioshock (which is definitely not a bad thing) but just from a different perspective. The story is about a "dad" trying to get his daughter back. The characters are the strongest part here. They have their backstory and they face their consequences. So much moral ambiguity and choices. The story has a good conclusion but I didn't like the dialogue of the daughter at the end, it annoyed me for some reason and she could've been written better. Also the story didn't hit as hard as Bioshock but was still good.
But it makes up for that in the gameplay department. I had more fun playing as a big daddy in this one. Almost all the powers are the same with few improvements like levels. There are few new powers here like scout, decoy and hypnotize, and they are all fun. Level design is good and there's some variety but could be better. I liked the inclusion of the under water levels. The weapons were fun as well. I liked the trap weapons and loved the drill. Perks/tonics are also handy and I think you can equip a lot more here. A lot more variety in enemies here which is a plus. Sadly there's no "big" fights or boss fights besides the big sisters but that's not a deal breaker. My only major complaint is that some of the areas are very big and it's easy to get lost. As someone who likes to collect as much as possible, this didn't help as I kept looking at the same place multiple times.
Overall, another solid entry in the Bioshock series.

Took everything good about Bioshock 1 and improved on it. Combat requires the use of ADAMs way more than ther first and it benefits greatly for it. Story is much more gripping rather than a fish out of water turned sleeper agent, this story focus on father daughter relationship and has a wide array of interesting characters who appear throughout.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

Feels a lot more streamlined than the first game... which is not a good thing. The Story feels like a carbon copy with far less interesting characters or intrigue, the plot is not as interesting as the first game. The game feels way easier to play, but also way more tedious to play than the first game. Many passages of the game are just fighting and waiting for hordes of enemies to rush you. The exploration aspect is not as in-depth as the first game, also the endings are a lot more obscure. The game-play feels a lot smoother than Bioshock 1, but at the same time most enemies just seem to get more and more bullet sponges the further you progress, making your weapons feel quite useless. Completed the game on hard difficulty without dying without realizing. It is a grindfest.
The DLC Minerva's Den on the other hand... is great. The story feels way more fleshed out than the main game and actually engages you. The mechanics and weapons are way more fun and feel a lot less grind-y.

BioShock games always have a great atmosphere and fun gameplay. This game is no different. The big thing holding it back is the story just isn't very interesting and pales in comparison to the first game. This game really just feels like a big "but what if..." from the developers. Like, "what if YOU were playing from the perspective of a Big Daddy?" or "what if YOU got to see why Little Sisters call corpses angels when they collect Adam from them!" or "so there are Big Daddies, what if there were... (pause) BIG SISTERS!!!"
I also laughed every time the little sisters call you their daddy with the advent in popularity of modern girls calling their boyfriends "daddy" it just made me chuckle like a fuckle.
But honestly, the game is fun, the combat is pretty good, it does get a little repetitive, but it's always pretty satisfying. Atmosphere is still top notch and it ran remarkably smooth on Switch.
If you've played the other BioShocks then, C'mon daddy! Play this one and feel like the big daddy you always knew you were!

Bioshock 2 is in almost every way, better than the first. The plot delves into the lore behind Big Daddies and little sisters, something that the original game was lacking, its just missing that classic Bioshock twist, while that doesn't harm it, I do wish I got that same jaw dropping feeling that the other two gave me. Gameplay was it was a massive step up from the first one, plasmids and guns can now be used at the same time, the weapons themselves feel awesome, the drill charge is vile and I love it. The Bis Sisters are tough, the new variants of Big Daddies are fun, its just an upgrade from the first. Great game, why people say to skip it is beyond my comprehension.Updated 2.5 Months Ago

Bioshock 2 is so much better than the first game. The gameplay is so much more fluid, the characters are lively, the environments and the atmosphere are as great as before, if not better. There's one small difference in the main gameplay loop. Before rescuing little sisters, you can gather ADAM up to two times with them. This maximizes your ADAM gains especially if you choose to rescue them. Over time... This grows stale. You protect the little sister as hordes of splicers rush over you. Not very hard. Not very fun.
However, the final level was very, VERY fun. That alone made playing the game worth it because the payoff was unexpected and really great. Overall I enjoyed this much more than the first game, especially with Sinclair's chatter.

Honestly, probably because I was playing the game on Hard difficultly, mall I was trying to do was SURVIVE!!! The powers are fun, tho we all know fire is the best and most effective. The story is a little confusing, but it's something. Also, why the cake is the sound in this game (remastered) a buggy mess? I got quiet guns and flipped auto channels. I litterally hear the left sound coming from my right speaker and vise versa. Apart from that, seams like a pretty cool game LOL

Technical aspects of the game are improved in nearly every aspect in comparision to the previous title - graphics, gunplay, minor fixes like oportunity to use plasmids at the same time with gun. But the overall narrative side just don't work as good as in prequel. The main story don't hit the spot like in the precursor.Updated 3 Months Ago

Experience the life Big Daddys and Little Sisters. This was a good sequel to Bioshock. Experiencing Rapture through the shoes of a Big Daddy is interesting. Cool thing is you get to wield a big ass drill. You can launch yourself around and deflect projectiles, giving the game a completely different approach if you didn't want to use guns. There is a much larger variety of enemies in Bioshock 2. The game challenges your use of plasmids and weapons more so than it's predecessor. I love how the game grouped the gene pools together, such that it's less cluttered when managing. Though I wish there were plasmid previews before purchasing, cause I never know what some plasmid upgrades actually do. The explanation is not that good. I still wish there was an easier way to manage your weapon and plasmid shortcuts though. You get so many along the way, that you can easily get mixed up during an intense battle. There were times where I just settled with a less optimal weapon because cycling through to the right one would take too much time, and I'd take too much damage. Though with multiple play throughs, I can imagine speed running through Bioshock 2 would be quite fun.
The narrative is one of the strong points of the game as usual. There are plenty of dialogue that enriches the story as you progress. Plenty of characters have various agendas, and don't always align with the ideologies of Sofia Lamb. This draws into question of their real intentions. I was questioning my ally for a majority of the game, assuming he had ill intentions. But in the end, he proved to be a good guy, who sacrificed himself. I enjoyed the ending as well. It nicely reflects the moral choices you've made on your journey.

I think out of the 3 Bioshocks this one's the best. having a big sister on your side all toward the end was beautiful. I really loved Eleanors Arc throughout. it really shows the seeds of what they qould try and explore with what's her face in Infinite.

I jumped into this game right after reigniting my love for the first game super excited to see where the world went. The sequel is indeed Bioshock but I dunno something just doesn't feel right. I'm trying to figure out exactly what is stopping that magic that just oozes from the first game from oozing out of this one. So I'll document my thoughts as stupid as they may be. First game had an insane opening 2 hours, from the crash, discovery of Rapture, bread crumb story and world development is just unrivalled in the industry. The gameplay, enemies, flow and execution of gameplay is so unique. In terms of story it all makes sense with the insane twist near the conclusion. Now I may be a little salty and fresh off a crash that wiped an hour of progress from me but that doesn't change how I put the game down multiple times before giving up after this setback. Like I was having fun, but felt like I wasn't doing all this fighting for anything big. Especially because of my suspension of disbelief involving the protagonist. I am not a bullet sponge, I'm a man who if caught in the open vs a couple splicers loses well over half his HP. Obviously this is for gameplay reasons but I think this might be what set the tone off for me from the start. And it kind of just kept making me think why couldn't they thought of something else after the first game like it was quite a good happy resolving ending.
To save the rambling, it's a good game, just felt samey, the first game had more unique environments, the new enemy variety didn't spark much for me, the story didn't drive me hard enough, and upon researching a video essay on the second games story, it's kind of eh, and doesn't wouldn't evoke the same reaction as the masterpiece first game would've. Enjoyable, not as magical, felt more "like a game" set in a cool unique environment than anything, would've kept going if I didn't have my progress wiped and wasn't rushing home to boot it up like I was the original.

In Bioshock 2 you return to Rapture, this time in the boots of a Big Daddy! Set 10 years after the original story, you journey through the crumbling city, once again using weapons and plasmids to battle enemies.Plasmids, found through the course of the game, allow you to genetically modify yourself to give you some very useful powers. These powers, used in combination with the environments, give you varied and interesting ways to defeat your foes.

The game feels very similar to the first one. The story has the same kind of beats. I wanted to feel like I was a Big Daddy, but I only got a character model who gets thrown around and hurt just as much as the confused human from the first game.

Bioshock 2 is a lot like the first Bioshock, but with better gameplay and a different core ideology that it explores. At its base the gameplay is pretty much the same as the first game just faster, with more interesting guns, and better enemy design. While the improvements don't make the gameplay great, they do make it ok, and the experience more enjoyable this time around. The level design is also more interesting, with the new levels fitting into the continuity of the universe without any trouble. However, the removal of the radial gun wheel does make things feel less strategic and more hectic. The new characters in Bioshock 2 are about as interesting as the ones in the first game, although the villain and her ideology are slightly less engaging compared to the masterpiece that is Andrew Ryan. As a foil to Ryan's individualist libertarianism, this game explores more collectivist views that are cult-like in their societal structures and focused on creating the perfect human, consisting of all the skill and knowledge of humanity. While not as interesting and relevant to reality compared to Ryan's libertarianism, the discussion of the core ideology is still entertaining and engaging. Bioshock 2 also explores the idea of parent-child relationships in a way that is almost opposite of the parent-child relationships in the first Bioshock. The bond between father and daughter is an even stronger through-line for the narrative than the core ideology and is the most entertaining aspect of the game.
Overall Bioshock 2 has aged better than the first game due to its stronger gameplay, and entertaining narrative. While the political discussion is not as interesting, it is still worthwhile to experience. As a whole, the second game is an improvement on the formula set by the first one and a worthwhile game to play.

Bioshock 2 is a fairly controversial entry in the series; some people will argue it ruin's Bioshock's legacy while others maintain that it's the best that the series has to offer, which I suppose is par for the course. I, for one, was more than happy to gear up for another outing in Rapture as the setting had me completely enamored in the first game, and I knew you played as a Big Daddy, so I was ready to inspire fear in the scum of Rapture just as had been done to me. As far as I was concerned, I was prepared to love Bioshock 2.Let's talk about the thing I was most excited for- playing as a Big Daddy. Unfortunately, for the most part, I really didn't feel as if I was commanding the awful power of a Big Daddy as I roamed the underwater city. After having fought a good number of them in the first game, I thought I was in for a power trip, but I felt just as flimsy as when I played as Jack. This could be explained by Subject Delta being the very first Big Daddy, and as such, equipped with lesser armaments and equipment, but you even fight other Alpha models in the game and they're much tankier than you. There's an argument to be had about gameplay versus story, like you can't expect to be an all-powerful monster fighting a bunch of mooks, but I think they should have leaned into it.
If they really didn't want the player to have the exact power level of the Big Daddies, you could have Delta's role be more of a "Big Daddy to-be", where he was maybe mentally conditioned to care for his Little Sister, but hasn't quite made the physical transformation yet. Either way, I did not get the level of power I was hoping for. The closest I experienced was when I had a full fuel gauge for the drill and full Eve. With that combination, I was able to zap whoever and grind them into paste, and it felt incredible. If the whole game were balanced around that level of power, maybe with larger groups of enemies or more complicated objectives beyond just running and fetching whatever macguffin is required at the moment, I think it could've much more easily sold the illusion of piloting a Big Daddy.
As far as atmosphere goes, I think they nailed it. You're still in the same Rapture you're used to, but it's given in to rot and decay even moreso than in the first game. You can tell that this is nothing more than the vestiges of the grandiosity that once graced the city, and you're merely lurking amidst the debris. I really enjoyed Sofia Lamb as the antagonist in your ear the whole game as well; you could tell she truly believed that what she was doing was right, but wasn't above using some sinister and snide remarks to manipulate people into getting her way. She wanted the salvation of Rapture, but was blind to the fact that it was no longer salvageable, and as you progress, her desparation becomes very apparent. This alongside Eleanor's occasional glimpses into her past create a very lonely feeling world that you're in, and strengthens your resolve to reunite with her.
While I didn't necessarily get the power fantasy I was expecting, Bioshock 2 still did a good job in making me feel more powerful than the first game. First off, the weapons were all weapons you've seen used by the Big Daddies and they all felt like they were heavy-duty armaments that your average man couldn't use. Specifically the drill; this thing with the ice plasmid that had a percent chance to freeze an enemy was absolutely busted. I constantly found myself needing fuel for it because it was my go-to in every scenario. They also added dual wielding in the form of plasmids and weapons. You no longer have to swap to plasmids in lieu of a weapon, instead your left hand is utilized and your right hand continues to wield a weapon. This feature alone cleaned up a lot of what clunkiness I felt Bioshock's combat could have.
While I think that Bioshock 2 was the weakest of the trilogy to me personally, (barring Minerva's Den DLC as I have yet to play that), it introduced some fun gameplay elements and I enjoyed the story; I feel like I was able to gain insight into Rapture and its history that wasn't available to me just from the first game. It's definitely a no-brainer pickup for any level of Bioshock enjoyers!

BioShock 2 is often considered to be the "black sheep" of the BioShock series, and after playing through the game myself... I can see why. That's not to say BioShock 2 is a bad game though, far from it, however, it's definitely the worst game in the series in my opinion. While the story has some great ideas, the lack of interesting plot, weak antagonist and absence of plot twists ultimately make the fetch quests meaningless.
The gameplay, however, is still enjoyable, and the new weapons, tools, dual wielding and enemy types are all great. Unfortunately, it feels way too similar to the first game, almost as if the game is supposed to be a standalone expansion to the first game.
Also, Rapture doesn't have the same impact as in the first game, but at least it maintains the intriguing atmosphere and history behind it.

- Fetch quests

BioShock 2 is so much of a faithful and direct sequel to the first game in every single way, to the point where it doesn't actually feel like a proper sequel; instead, it feels like a standalone expansion with the lenght of the first game.

I always find myself comparing Bioshock 1 & 2 whenever I think about these games. There's no debating that Bioshock 2's story pales in comparison to 1, but I believe that 2's combat is vastly superior to 1. It takes the good parts of 1 and improves upon them, and leaves out the bad parts of 1. The parts where you have to defend a little sister from an onslaught of enemies for a specific amount of time were particularly memorable parts to me. So while the story isn't as good, it's still a blast to play through Bioshock 2.Updated 9 Months Ago

Could not quite catch lightning in a bottle a second time. The story in Bioshock 1 is so good with a fascinating application of Ayn Rand Objectivism and that famous twist. But you can't do that twice. It was still enjoyable though as an "interactive story".Outside of story, well, there are games with better FPS mechanics that are more fun and satisfying.
